South Park RPG (Obsidian/THQ, 360/PS3/PC) Details [Update: Seems To Be 2D]

Anyways, this may not what exactly what I want from Obsidian, but it sounds promising.

To be honest, this really is a case of not knowing I wanted this until it was announced for me. I really love the combat in the PM games, and combining that with Obsidian's flare for designing interesting RPG mechanics and Parker and Stone's sense of humour, I'm crazily excited to see how this turns out.

So, I'm guessing your party members will be like Kyle, Kenny and Stan? Or just be on the side lines, giving you quests and just be npc's? I hope they join you at some point. I love the battle system of Paper Mario, so that is cool. But please tell me they leave the town and go to hell, or imaginenation land. Hope its not all in South Park.

Also, I hope mecha strasiend is in the game, lol.

This actually sounds pretty awesome. I like that they are using the combat system on Paper Mario. Fucking amazing.

Here are some things I missed. The editor says the game look like an episode of southpark and there is one screenshot that I am not sure if it is a cut-scene or in-game but it definitely looks like it could be a screenshot of an episode of southpark.

Also you can explore the town between quests its a little vague it sound like walking around the town is 2D the writer mentions "exploration takes the characters from the left to the the right(and vice versa), but branching paths occasionally take them in the background or foreground to prevent the game for m becoming overly linear".

There are a few screenshot of combat, the author mentions that encounters are like classic Final Fantasy that are presented from a side view. With every combat screenshot there is only the player and one other party member(
Cartman, Kyle, or Butters
), fight 2-5 enemies(
Girls, Gingers, Hippies, Fantasy style, and Goth
) at a time.

its obvious its 3rd person, you can see monsters on the map before you enter a fight. And its going to be turned based.

Definitely. I'm not the biggest South Park fan, but I'm down for a humor focused RPG with a talented developer at the helm. Unless it takes a turn for the worse, I'll be there day one. Obsidian have earned blind-buy status from me anyways.

Yeah, I can't say I'm all that interested, but if Parker and Stone are actually involved and this is an Obsidian RPG, how can I not buy it?

It's 2D??? Ok I think I may be out now, or at rental status at best.

Sounds surprisingly good. Especially nice to hear the combat system is like Paper Mario/Mario & Luigi and that the protagonist is silent.

Very good stuff. Never played Paper Mario though so I don't really know if I should be glad with their design choice in regards to combat.

Costume Quest really made me long for more stuff like it. I know I can be pretty harsh on "autopilot" games but I actually really enjoy games like PM and CQ which are light and fun while still making you feel like you're actually doing stuff and not just pressing X to not die.

2D? I didn't know this was a downloadable game.

Edit: I was joking with this but now I'm sad at how many people are serious about it. :(

It's supposed to be a full length game but how big of a deal can the game be if it has a paper mario battle system and is 2D? I even set my RPG standards low for this and I'm still ending up disappointed.

Color me not excited at all. These kinds of things are very, very rarely any good. the usually turn out awful, much like video game movies.

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
Wow, when I heard of this game the other day, I was actually thinking how good the Paper Mario style would fit...and now I hear they gameplay is similar. :)

Paper Mario 2 for the Gamecube is a great RPG >.>

Have you guys ever played Paper Mario?

The way this game is described makes it sound to me more like the PM style, where it's actually 3D but the enemies, trees etc are textures on a 2-sided polygon. Which would be sooooooooo much better for making a game which looks like South Park than full 3D.

Yes and it's insanely simplistic and easy. I mean I still want to play it on 3DS but it's going to be a $10 purchase probably. And you're right for looks 2D is probably best for south park but that's all it's going to achieve. I wanted an open world south park or at least a 3D one even if it looked a little weird, it'd at least be fun to play.

Comparing Obsidian to Hothead? Come on now.

This sounds awesome.

The details in the OP say that the game is 2D, so I imagine it looks like South Park.

Edit:

Unless I'm not understanding these sentences:

Sounds like he was paraphrasing interview quotes describing the graphics. I just thought it was odd that the OP described concept art but not how the actual game looks, which seemed to imply by omission that the latter wasn't actually shown. But perhaps I was mistaken.

Oh, I was mostly just talking about the visual-style. Paper Mario isn't for everyone, but given the talk of classes and fully customisable characters it sounds far more complex anyway. Also, there's no reason it can't be open-world if it's 2D or a hybrid, I thought it was implied quite strongly that it was?

All I saw was the quote saying exploration takes the player from the left to the right. There's really not much you can do in that regard, that's one of the huge reasons games went to 3D to begin with.

I mean I'll try to keep an open mind until we learn more but a 2D supposedly full length RPG is a really tough pill for me to swallow in 2012.

Really like what I read! 2d sounds good enough for me, but I hope the combat isn't as simplistic as Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi scheme would be more acceptable (as Costume Quest).

Brian Boitano must be a summon!

Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi don't even have very similar combat. Which is it like?

Hmm, its been a few years since I played those game, so I am just going by what the author said. I might have paraphrased too heavily on that point so I change it in my post, here is what the author said "Many elements of the combat system are reminiscent of Paper Mario and the Mario & Luigi games". There are screen-shots of combat but they do not show any menus.

Getting strong Beavis and Butthead vibes. A game that's quietly far better than it had any right to be. 2-D is a big plus.
