In all seriousness, I always forget about NPDs until I see the thread. lol

Without knowing your join date, I can tell you that NPD used to be bigger. The new format messed things up and that has sort of taken a lot of the initial buzz out of it. Although holiday sales are always fun.

Not bitter, just unsweetened
All the new format did was kill LTD and seeing when games hung around for a long time

It was fun to see Halo as a constant #15 game for basically 2.5 years

I'm guessing they changed the format to keep the exact numbers for each SKU and outlet more valuable to the subscribers.

I can imagine MS Entertainment Group-Xbox will be getting some nice bonuses this year.

Bad timing, NPD! Very bad timing. Leaving town tomorrow morning so I'll have to jump through hoops to make it in time for tomorrow's shenanigans.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
...So we'll have datas 1 hour and a half earlier than the normal time?
Good.

Well, as it turns out, my situation has changed. I will be doing shorter, regular columns and NPD will be one of those each month. The big 4+ page feature on Monday after NPD results is no more.

Yeah since they changed the format I lost intrest in NPD sales threads.

But I can't wait for the 3DS sales.

Gamasutra.
Hate to see your articles reduced, jvm.

Keep fighting the good fight.
Thanks. We'll see how much my work is really reduced. I may end up writing more total because the work is distributed across weeks (instead of a weekend) and it won't be thematically tied to one thing (i.e. NPD).

How dare you accuse the company that has pulled strings to make sure we havent seen a PSP number in years of meddling with the totally independent NPD.

Joking aside, we have no reason to believe Sony had anything to do with NPD releasing less and less information over time. For all we know NPD figured if all the information is available to everybody, people (investors) are not going to pay for it.

I do not put too much stock in the claim that "vendors asked us not to publish their data". This is not internal data from MS or Sony and therefore they have zero say in whether this can be published or not.

First time since I was a fresh member that I've wanted to see the NPD results thread and NPD denies me this little joy. Why.jpg

The problem is, whenever a company has a very bad month, numbers are delayed or omitted.

We even saw this with 3DS numbers that were bundled with the DS earlier this year when sales dropped off.

And when the DS launched, same thing, we got "Nintendo portable" sales...but once the DS picked up again, GBA and DS were split again.

However, Sony has been most prominent with this, and missing PSP and occasional missing PS3 numbers.

Isn't it more likely that NPD have just gotten greedy with their info than having some conspiracy with Sony/Nintendo/MS?

The investors get the data anyway. As for customers, I am not sure if this is going to affect their buying decisions in a meaningful way. Yes, there is corporate pride. But as I said that's not NPD's problem.

It does make sense to release bad news after the market is closed or even on Friday in order to dampen knee-jerk reaction from the investors. But then we are talking about the timing of the data released to investors and not the amount of data released to the public.

I have seen the NPD statements tainted with bias (sugar coating Sony’s bad numbers and trying to find a silver lining for them even when there was none). But I like to believe that’s my own personal impression and it is –me- reading too much between the lines or NPD (not unlike Pachter and other analysts) being embarrassed about their (or analysts') incorrect early predictions on how Sony is going to dominate gaming market this generation.

That never happened. Several people here assumed that "DS family" included 3DS, but that was later proven wrong.

Realistically, unless Sony is responsible for, say, 20% of all NPD subscriptions and threatened to unsubscribe, I don't think their willingness to share or omit numbers would be of any relevance to NPD at all, at least not for all the other numbers by all the other companies.

There's also the chance Sony did want to hide their own figures and NPD decided to take the opportunity and hide everyone else's too.

Well, this doesn't take a rocket scientist. Microsoft and Nintendo both publicly release their sales figures for every console, every NPD day. Sony does not (we always work out the PS3 number from the share percent MS gives+the Wii # Nintendo gives).

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM WHOEVER COULD HAVE MADE NPD STOP THE NUMBERS

Nintendo has hidden the 3DS number a couple of times. They didn't even give PR one month this year, IIRC.
