Can you name these MS second tier franchises that sell over a million in their first month?

Guy is obviously trolling. Has Microsoft had anything besides Halo or Gears break 1M in a month? I can't think of anything.

As for Nintendo, there's Pokemon, and Mario, and Mario Kart. That is about it. They are only the three biggest franchises in gaming, so I suppose they must be getting close to second tier.

1M first month is pretty rare for an exclusive title.

Has Fable broke over a million? I can't remember if 2 or 3 did, or if they broke over a million in total on two months in NPD running. Not sure.

Next generation is going to be really strange. I wonder if nextbox will be able to become the best selling console right out of the gate

its so bizare, they made a 3ds version which is similar in power to the wii so it cant have been that difficult to make a wii version

They could have done a Wii version, Sonic colors sold very well, but they received a memo that everybody should abandon the Wii in 2011 despite some healthy 2010 sales.

The combination of Pokemon, Mario and Mario Kart (plus others) :p

Fable II was 790k and Fable III was 580k during their first months. Both broke 1M the next month. Fable is also Microsoft's third biggest series.

That's right. I reckon if Microsoft advertises Fable 4 well, seeing it's a whole new engine with a longer development time than Fable 3 has, I reckon it could do a million in first month.

I wonder if this means the Wii will also have disappointing December sales. If so, will Iwata admit that the Wii is done for?

Ubisoft also really chose basically the worst time slot ever for Rayman Origins. Could they choose a busier holiday season?
They BG&Ed it. It's like Ancel's contract demands all games he makes release in the middle of the holiday season on the same day as one of Ubi's biggest releases.

December sales will be just great with all the price cuts and bundles going out for Christmas

Define great? Wii hasn't had a December under 2M since the supply constrained days of 2007. Dec 2009 was close to 4M. I think anything less than 2M will not be considered a good result. Especially since the other consoles are prepped to have record or near record months.

It'll sell more than the PS3.

That is a no-brainer. Nintendo systems have outrageous Decembers due to their popularity as Christmas gifts. This may be the first time this gen that Wii isn't the first place console in December though. Other than launch.

Across three platforms too.

Games like these are only feasible as download titles these days
. It's a real pity because there'll be less and less variety on store shelves.

No?
Well, maybe when they're from Ubisoft, but 2D platformers still have a very big roll in consoles.

Seeing comments like this are depressing.

Oh, please. Ubisoft were incredibly naïve not only for releasing this in November, but also for releasing it at $60 on the HD twins.

Without the widespread $40 sales on Black Friday the sales probably would have been catastrophic.

I'm a big Rayman fan, but I will pick it up for £13 in a few weeks. There are so many games that are just a few weeks old that are so much cheaper. Consumers aren't stupid.

Well you guys can say goodbye to ever getting Beyond Good and Evil 2, or more beautiful, 1080p, 60fps BRILLIANT 2d platformers for the next few years. Time for more Rabbids and shooters!

I hate all of you.

Will this still be released on 3DS and Vita?

How will Ubisoft be able to sell the handheld version at $30 - $40 when the console version will be $20 or lower by the time it is released.

Generally for December sales the rule of thumb is to take your November results and double them.

Has Microsoft had aggressive December sales like they did in November though? Just about every retailer was giving away a 50+ dollar gift card with a purchase. If they do 360 sales will be ridiculous in December.

Rayman Origins had a really moronic retail strategy. Ubisoft are masters overshippers though and RO was made by like 4 people so it probably wasn't a financial disaster.

dunno about america but as i said earlier it had a huge ad campaign in the uk so yes it is a financial disaster

It doesn't help that the last time they put any real muscle into Rayman was when they spun off the Rabbids into their own series shortly afterward.

It's not just that, when people saw RO for the first time they automatically assumed it was an downloadable game. It's very hard to combat that, when in the consumer mind 2-D games should automatically be a lot cheaper and on XBLA, PSN and Steam.

Nintendo seem to be the only one that can get away from this mentality.

Let's not fool ourselves, Rayman is a MUCH smaller brand. Rayman is also a lot weirder than Donkey Kong and wasn't backed by its company the way DKCR was. Even if Rayman didn't have competition from a new Mario game it would've bombed, but with a new Mario game it was commercial suicide.

While I don't think Rayman Origins is as great as the reviews might make you believe, it certainly didn't deserve to do this badly.

Rayman is a multi million (>10M) brand, but the last one was Rayman 3 many years ago.

Rayman's fate was predetermined by its high MSRP, deathwish of a release window (most titles around this time), and from what I could tell, zero marketing/advertising/presence. Too bad, but not surprising.

I wonder how much less DKCR would have sold if it didn't stick with the "Country" name and went with something just like "Donkey Kong Returns" or "Donkey Kong Wii" or "Donkey Kong: Give me back my damn bananas".

Huge (smart) branding there.

I think you are messing some things.

The new gamers don't like yearly iterations of the franchises. We have seen this with EA games for example. They buy Just Dance games because they have new songs, but they are happy playing golf with a last year game. The old gamers are happy buying yearly iterations of the franchise and that's why the EA games sell very differently on the HD twins.

So Nintendo can try to sell one or two iterations of their franchise to everyone or try to sell five iterations of their franchise to the old gamers. I believe the first one is a better approach because they can add enough differences and not just new levels. They can sell them to a much larger pool of clients. And they can add the "new thing" the last console has.

On the other hand I think Nintendo needs the third parties. Yes their games sell like nothing else, but they can't keep a console alone. Becuase if they fail, Wii Music, they would need a very strong software to come back. But if they have the third parties, they can fail and the console won't dive.

They need to get third parties on board or they need to build better relationships/buy out companies in order to get their development back on track. I suggest working more with Eurocom.
