New PS Vita Units Have Freezing and Touch Screen Issues

Whenever new hardware launches, whatever it is, there are problems. The PS Vita is new hardware, and while I haven't experienced any hardware issues, others have. These are some of them.

According to YouTube videos, there are some machines experiencing lock-ups and freezing. One error appears to occur during the System Update, which then freezes. Another issue seems to be a non-responsive touch screen. It's still early in the hardware's launch cycle, so it's difficult to discern how widespread the issue is. Pro-gamer Kiryu Tsukimiya tweeted that he soon experienced it.

When the PS Vita freezes, the hardware apparently will not shutdown. A writer at Japanese news site Rocket News experienced that issue during Shin Sangoku Musou Next online play.

When the machine is in its regular operational state, if you press the power button, the Vita should shutdown. If it does not shutdown then, Sony's PS Vita help page said to try the following: keep holding the power button for 20 seconds until the front screen goes dark. Then, press the power button for five seconds to turn it back on. That apparently should work, and according to the Rocket News writer, it powered down his Vita. However, he repeatedly experienced the bug while playing Shin Sangoku Musou Next online.

These aren't the only issues, though. Online, some PS Vita owners are also reporting that they cannot boot up their PS Vitas, even though the handhelds have a full charge. There could be an explanation for this, and Rocket News has a walkthrough, that consists of questions to determine if the PS Vita owner held down the power button long enough or if the handheld is simply in standby mode.

I'd imagine these sort of issues would be handled by the time the Vita launches in the West in Feb. 2012. One of the more worrying issues, however, is the possibility of screen "stains" or "spots" on the OLED display. One Japanese PS Vita owner uploaded photos of his Vita screen, which supposedly shows display screen issues.

Oh, the joys of launching new hardware and being an early adopter. That's what system updates and hardware upgrades are for—fixing.

Has there been a (early model) Sony gaming system that hasn't had system-killing flaws? PS1, PS2, PS3, now the Vita... did the PSP have anything that could bork it? Can't recall.

So a game has a bug that freezes the console and as for the other "issue" they're not sure what the user might have done.

At least it's not a hardware fuckup like the original PSP and 3DS screen scratching...
But you could at least use the actual systems to play games or take out the battery to reset it instead of having to wait for it to entirely drain.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Wait a fucking second. The Vita has Freezing and Touch Screen Issues?! FFFFFUUUUUUCCCCKKKK!!!

Holy shit! That's a disaster! The worst possible case scenario! That means that if a game is released, it will be COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY!!! Truly locked-up away!

Not to mention that us folk who live in Europe and have US PS1 games on their PS3/PSP won't be able to play them on the Vita.

How the hell does this not have much replies yet? That's an apocalyptic scenario!

Tits for that.

Oh and I forgot the dead pixel issue with PSP... dear god that was bad.

I noticed this in the Red Sun livestream the other day.

It's the kind of stuff you expect from a four year old android phone

IGN has a clearer article on these issues and has the complete official Sony PR response and suggestions. http://vita.ign.com/articles/121/1215139p1.html

A notice to PlayStation Vita customers

Recently, we have received many inquiries via the PlayStation Vita Information Center as well as through normal channels. Depending on time, it may continue to be difficult to contact us over the phone. We're sorry to have caused such an inconvenience.

As for inquiries regarding the PlayStation Vita, we have tried to make its operation as easy as possible. We've prepared a Q&A below, so before you contact us please consult it.

[Q&A for issues frequently encountered by customers]

The power cuts out
Freezing in mid-operation
Cannot connect data service
Cannot register a PSN account at the initialization screen

Its translated from a Japanese statement. So does the fast response indicate the problem is "wide spread" or just Sony really wanting to get on top of this to prevent bad word of mouth? Or a bit of both maybe.

buying any brand new top of the line tech toy....BUYER BEWARE

though if the first batch of vitas sold in US is made in Japan, it would be worth the risk of buying it rather than waiting for Vita redesign thats made in China (my launch PSP1000 was "made in Japan")

Are you talking about Vita? He said it worked and the PS Vita shut down. So the whole can't shutdown the PS Vita part is bullshit.

I still remember those glorious days when that trash site was banned.

I've read it in more than just a singular place, you know. Not to mention lots of videos on Niconico and Youtube show the same thing.

anyways, just to relay what happened to me this morning

Unit froze up and i had to hold down the power button for a good 20 second before the unit shut down.

The big issue was it wouldn't come back on. I tried the "hold it down for 20 seconds, release , hold for 5" and the "hold off for two minutes" and it did not come back on.

DJ Mizuhara mentioned plugging the USB charger cable in the base. i was on a train so had no power - so wasn't sure what the point would be.

But there we have it - hit power on with the cable in the base and it came on as normal. A bit crappy and almost certainly a weird firmware issue which i duly logged in the official complaints thread ;)

Why'd I get all of those replies? There's nothing wrong with buying hardware day one but it really gives people no reason to complain about faulty design. You took the risk when you bought it. If you don't like that then don't buy day one. Buying later will always be a "safer" bet than buying day one.

You mean that holding down the power button for 20 seconds doesn't work or that normal shutdown doesn't work? Because if it's the second it's a bullshit "problem" I still face with my PS3 and I don't give a crap about it. It's usually from game bugs so it's happens sometimes.

Not when they will take out features in later updates

So, exactly how does the milk from Sony's teat taste anyway?
