RAGE |OT| "It's done when it's done"

Really enjoyed the demo for the 360. Looked nice and ran really smooth. I really hope id gives us a proper multiplayer Wolfenstein on the rage engine soon.

So I've just joined the resistance and the game is really starting to pick up. I've got cool shit, I'm doing more unique and interesting missions and HOLY FUCK are the animations great in this game. Nothing like having a mutant jump onto a door frame, then run towards you like a nutter, or run against the wall and do that crazy Matrix-y flip move. They just look so awesome. It definitely helps with the gunplay too because when you hit someone you can really feel the impact through the animations.

This game is wasted with the open world. Too much am I going to the sheriff, being sent somewhere which is a fairly long drive, to flick a switch and pick something up only to drive straight back. Fucking boring. The world is void of personality and is just boring to drive through, as well.

The linear levels (like the dead city or whatever it's called and the sewers) are so amazing, top class id design. If this game was a focused, linear game I think it would be one of the best of the year. As it stands, I have to put up with the open world crap to get to the real meat of the game. Shame.

Hopefully these linear levels will only increase now I'm part of the resistance. My next stop is the prison to save their leader, which sounds cool.
The prison area is a good long linear mission. The subway, gear head vault, and jackals camp coming up soon are the best 3 missions in the game.

I could not find a coop game last time I tried but you can boot those linear missions with no inventory management up solo.

Played the demo last week and enjoyed it. Will definitely pick up the game once it drops some more dollars, maybe boxing day.

I forget what level of difficulty I played on but things seemed hard as hell to kill and could definitely do a shit tonne of damage.
On PC nightmare difficulty is too easy but that probably doesn't translate to gamepads 1:1.

DAMMIT id!!!!

hurry up and announce DLC for this shit already!
I reinstalled my PC version and man, I just love how it plays and feels. SO GOOOD!
Unfortunately, I've already beaten it on Nightmare, so yeah, there isn't exactly anything else left to do.

Maybe I'll try some Legends of the Wasteland...

I mean, even if they do put some out, they've pretty much wasted their window here =(

Yeah there really needed to be a "Are you using a keyboard and mouse or a fucking gamepad?" screen come up when you select nightmare, and if you picked the former it ramped the difficulty up massively. For me, nightmare should mean needing to use more weapons than just the pistol and fatboys, which is a huge shame because the weapons/gunplay in the game are fantastic.

Every one of my friends have all said the game is way too easy as well. Rage's "Nightmare" setting was more like "Hurt Me Plenty" at most.

Does anybody play this one the playstation 3D display?

I'm getting a weird blur effect when I turn. Everybody turns a redish color when I turn for about half a second. Is it the game or my display settings?

Have they ever officially commented on the PS3 texture pop?

I'm really curious about this...

There's something about the controls on PS3, they seem sort of sluggish to me. Even with the sens at max (both x and Y axis) they still felt a little sluggish. Makes it a pain when those nimble bandits get within reach of you. I try to keep a distance between them but if they get in close the sort of sluggish aiming makes it tricky to track them. This is going by the demo.

It's just another instance where a PC developer doesn't know how to create smooth analog settings... and instead of giving us sliders to make our own adjustments, we get the one generic "sensitivity" slider that doesn't do anything useful.

Just finished the game (PS3 version). Loved the gameplay and had a great time throughout, including the car combat surprisingly enough.

That ending though...what a fucking cop-out. Total disappointment.

Tell me about it, that same game with a different ending. And a few more tweaks would have been in the high 8s/10 for me, maybe in the low 9s. But how it is now I'd give it a 6.5 or a 7/10.

Finished 2 days ago,ps3 versione, it left me...i dunno.
The game has a great potential, but is quite a disappointment.
I felt troughout the entire game that it isn't what the designers wanted it to be.
Lot of great ideas but none of them are deeply applied.Just to say one, i beated the last chapter only using the shotgun, so what's the point of
giving me that blue-firing thing at the last 20 minutes of the game? Hl2 just did that, but in a far better way
?
The overall impression to me is that rage is simply a prequel of what we will play on this new idtech engine.Loved the art direction, once you get used to the texture popping, you will start enjoying more the beautiful wastelands at a rock-solid 60fps.

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
The one misstep with Rage's end-game is the lack of a final boss to waste the BFG on. Way to forget the single-most important aspect of classic game design, id.

Has ID or ATI fixed the issues with their graphics found in the PC version of this game? Amazon has it on sale for PC and I was thinking of trading in my PS3 version for the PC one.

In case of relevancy I have a Radeon HD 5770

Doesn't seem like there's even been a hint of DLC yet. Was hoping we would have some by the end of the year, but that obviously won't be the case.

Just scratching the surface of this game
Going and collecting the parts for the new defibrillator for the crazy doc
and liking it so much more than I thought I would. The gunplay feels fresh and enjoyable and I LOVE wingsticking heads off. But the Mutants in the sewer and hospital scare me hahahaha. I feel so nervous walking through there right now.

I hope the game keeps this pace up, though. I never really enjoyed mission based games, where I'm told to go do this and that to get these or those items/plot points, but Rage has me not minding it for the first time since ME. Kind of curious to see where the story goes too.

Also, how do I change my guns on my buggie? I'm playing on the 360 (i know....) and bought both the mini gun and rockets upgrades to the car. But I can't figure out how to change between them =(

In the garage, where you select which vehicle to take out into the wasteland.

Just finished it today (PC) and while the story was meh (and the ending was a joke) the game is easily my single player FPS of the year. The gunplay, environments, music, enemy variation and animation, and the weapon arsenal all combined to make an incredibly fun experience. I even found the car battles fun!

subversus

I've done nothing with my life except eat and fap
I just tried PS3 demo. I didn't expect to be impressed but I'm impressed. Graphics are nothing special but gameplay is tight and tense. Should have been a pure corridor shooter. Definitely will buy once high-res pack hits PC, Carmack said this will happen soon.

I think I just have 2 or 3 more missions to go to beat the game, but it's kinda getting annoying. All enemies so heavily armored and squirrelly...

This or DNF were my choices this year to blow money on a classic FPS developer's possibly mediocre game. I probably made a mistake going for DNF. I think I'd really like this game from reading through the thread.

Hard to say...I had really low expectations for DNF but I am enjoying it more than I did Rage. I also had high expectations for Rage and after playing it I couldn't understand why I was so excited for such a mediocre game.

Just like I wasn't hyped for Doom 3, I wasn't hyped for Rage. And just like Doom 3 exceeded my expectations by a large margin, so is Rage.

Just finished a section where I gasped out loud 3 times in the span of 5 minutes. I go many years between a game making me flinch or gasp. Doom 3 made me do it on multiple occasions and it's why I still have high regards for it. It's rare that it happens to me. And I don't care by what means it's accomplished, I respect a game that makes it happen. Rage has entered that category after my last session. 3 gasps in 5 minutes is my record. And as I stated, I don't do it often. It's been years since it last happened. So huge thumbs up. Really digging this game.

So I've just got to the last area and I checked the IGN guide to see I have like 4/5 missions left to finish.

Really odd, because I'm only 4hrs 20 into the game. Much shorter than I expected.

The fact it's such a short game only adds to my annoyance that they just sent me back to the Dead City to backtrack all the way through for basically yet another fetch quest. Great game design there - cheers!

Urgh.

A lot of people commented on the length when it was about to come out. Some reviewers claiming sub-10 hours, others saying 20 hours. It was and still is pretty inconsistent. You'll probably finish off around the 6 hr mark worst case if you're flying through the game I reckon as you're approaching some of the best levels it has to offer.

The thing about RAGE is that the game can be padded out by the side quests and driving. Strip it out and you've a really short game. Nothing wrong with that (a lot of semi-open world games do it too), but the playtimes of 20hours really inflated the perceived play time you were going to get which I think is where a lot of people are aiming their disappointment at, especially when you have a game 5-6 years in the making.

Finished it. Glimpses and moments of brilliance, but never more than that.

Someone compared it to Ep 2 in the Steam thread (JaseC?) and I'm sorry but that's utterly laughable ;)

I really hope id learn a lot of lessons from the design of this game and come back with a kick ass, linear, Doom 4. This game could've been one of the best of the year, easily.

A fun six hours, but I'll never touch it again.

I hate how when they want you to be done with someone you just hit a dead end. Some people give you missions and then just shut up and don't respond. And if its a major character they just outright take them out of the game. They close the door to their room or say they got kidnapped. A more specific example is that guy that upgrades your defibrillator, he just ignores you if you go see him when your done with his missions. Its a shame because the took a lot of care in animating them and making them believable characters and so stuff like that just sticks out.

Can't for the life of me get this to run well on a hd6870.

Texture popup remains when turning around no matter what even with the patch, and I tried some config tweaks from the thread and it just made the game run poorly.

I'm ready to give up and forget it ever existed.

I think the story and characters had a lot of potential and were completely compromised by the open world/vehicle design and that's what I was really getting at in my post. If they focused more on the story and characters, as well as a linear design, it really could have been special.

Thanks for bolding my typo, also :p

Or just save it till AMD or ID fixes it. Or you get an Nvidia card. I think the game is great. Now I get why some gaffers absolutely rave about it.

Can you rush through if you want? Sure. Are the diversions for everyone? They never are in games. But unlike most games, I'm actually enjoying piddling around doing these things. It's a very well crafted game and deserving of the praise some people heap on it.

Wish ID had made a classic deathmatch for online though. Those weapons/toys would be great in a Quake style environment.

How the fuck am I supposed to platinum this when NO ONE plays online on PS3?

I had 1 other guy in the lobby and it just waited for 2 more. You'd think they'd allow a race to go ahead with only 2.

I just want the 2 race trophies for winning one and participating in one.

Amazed you did it all in 6 hours.

My Normal completed save is 16 hours. But I did pretty much everything you can do in the game. Sometimes a few times.

What are the benefits of installing this (Xbox version). I would have to delete a lot of stuff off my harddrive to fit it. Is it worth it?

Basically better loadtimes and texture pop-in is REALLY reduced. Like you have to look for it. HIGHLY recommend installing it as id Software/John Carmack intended.

That's strange with the newer drivers it works well (in the engine's limitations) on my 5850. But yeah this game is just a huge, huge disappointment.

Haven't tried this on PC yet, bit I was really impressed by the framerate on the PS3 demo, and will definitely pick this up on PC eventually. I wish more console devs went in that direction, or at least locked their games at 30. I bet there are tons of PS3 owners out there who don't know what frame rate is saying, "wow, this is so smooth compared to my other games".

Realistically... is there any way they can fix the texture pop on PS3? Will they even try?

I tried to play this again... but the shit makes me feel nauseated after only a few mins.

Unfortunately as of right now the only solution is by manually fixing the problem ourselves.

Wait until there's a sale on it again though. Newegg had this on sale for around 89.00 dollars a few days ago.

Apparently solid state drives make a world of difference for games that use texture streaming tech like Rage.

Hardly unexpected, since id and Zenimax thought it was a good idea to make the multiplayer a car combat game instead of a shooter. Even a simple team deathmatch would have kept a community for longer.

But I blame the stupid "No MP = no buy" mentality. People demand it, devs spend time and money making a half-assed MP mode and then those that demanded MP don't play it...

I have the feeling no one demanded a car combat focused MP. Like you suggest I would've at least checked out an on foot MP. I'm not against car combat per se but the car gameplay didn't exactly made me yearn to play it competitively.

I don't think people's demand had anything to do with it. Maybe indirectly because sp only games tend to get hurt by used games sales a lot more. So it's more the publisher's demand "no MP = people will sell soon = more used games sales = less revenue for us" sort of thinking.

Out of interest since I haven't played it nor do I have the intention to: Did they really put some effort into the MP?

Fffff $19 dollars on amazon!? I want to buy but have to many games to finish right now. Is that price gonna stay or is it gonna change back?

I stuck entirely to the main story. Did a few races, which were pretty dull, and a few side quests which were go to X, pick up Y, come back to Z. Boring!

It's very stupid that a shooter doesn't have an online multiplayer deathmatch/team deathmatch component.

Their flawed rationale was: "If we just release the normal shooter deathmatch kind of stuff, it will be buried in the glut of competition, so we will make a unique car combat mode instead!"

What they refused to realize was that their car combat mode would also be buried in the glut of competition, even more so than if it was more traditional shooter fare.

Just saw this was 29.99, guess it's time to bite. It was never really on my radar with all the titles this year but I'm finally getting all the games I wanted to play but skipped:
Space Marines
Dead Space 2
Driver
Deus Ex
Rage

maybe they could patch one in
They could and if I vaguely remember they hinted at the possibility if demand was there. But this game is done saleswise and I don't think we'll see neither TDM nor the better texture filtering patch (for PC) that was talked about.

This game needs DM. I finished up the SP not too long ago, around 13 hours on normal with all races complete and a majority of the side quests, and frankly I have little interest in online car combat. (I am apparently not alone.)

The shooting in this game is the star; it's why you want to play -- it's simply fun to shoot shit in Rage.

So, of course, there is no MP where I can shoot my friends. Go figure.
