too many damn systems out there to choose from from a consumer standpoint!!

good grief

maybe the big 3 should only be allowed 1 console and 1 handheld system at anyone time PERIOD
I have been thinking about this recently. The shelves are going to get crowded as hell when next-gen launches. I believe it will have the most actively supported systems with large software libraries ever (at least since the 16-32/64 bit transition.) There is a good chance that varied input devices will increase the size of demo stations. Best Buy will love it. Their stores are too big and they have they space for it. I wonder how Gamestops are going to deal.

Sony should stick to its price as long as possible. Overall sales aren't as important as profit in the lead up to next-gen hardware.

Conversely, MS needs to get as many people as possible on board with Live and Kinect interaction. Live is a proven moneymaker and it's the perfect platform to get its own customers evangelizing hardware upgrades. The CE industry is taking notes from the Kinect 'experience.' MS has the opportunity to leverage the Kinect as a competitor to Google TV, but they are running out of time.

So if the 360, Wii, and PS3 combined are around 3.7m, the 3DS is "nearly as much as the 360" so I'd say probably around 1.4m or 1.6m, that leaves the DS+PS2+PSP total at 1m or 1.2m?

let's see sales for the next few months and see if they decline vs last year... the big 3 still can do price drops to extend the gen. this is tough one to judge when the sweet spot is for the next gen to start.

but damn this year will have another console Wii U... i dont think the market can support another full fledged console.

So what do we think the next step in PS3's 10 year plan should be?

Sony cut the price in 2011 by $50, but sales are down significantly year over year:

1.21M in December 2010 (down 11% compared to December 2009)
~936K in December 2011 (down ~23% compared to December 2010)

A couple of Sony suits mentioned recently about targeting the female market a bit more, didn't they?

Party is over in the US in terms of having an uptick trend. They'll keep limiping along and hopefully for Sony PS4 makes them competitive again.

Lowest console sales since 2005 eh? Consoles paving the way for the PC uprising.

the integrated graphics of almost all laptops sold today kind of prevent PC gaming from becoming a major sector of the market.

This.

Nintendo could strike gold again. Their timing is great.

MS will unveil the next xbox before the WiiU hit the market. They'll put together some bullshot trailers of games to undercut the impact of the Wiiu's launch. WiiU is going to get dreamcasted....

As dumb as CoD has gotten, I don't think they've gotten to the point where you can wave your arms around like a jackass and be rewarded like you were Fred Astaire.

Just Dance 3 doesn't rely on getting the player addicted for points or leveling up, people play it because they have fun playing it.

As opposed to the highly cerebral CoD?

This discussion is silly.

  • COD
  • Gears
  • Halo
  • Just Dance
  • Dance Central
  • Kinect Sports
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Battlefield
  • Uncharted
  • God of War

...

Do any of those games seem "deep"... at all? No game in the list is that more deserving than any other. Stop pretending otherwise.

maybe Ninty should just hold off on launching Wii U and beef it up a bit more. It's going to be so under-hp'd next to 720/PS4.

Why? It's a fun party game. Easy for anyone to pick up and have a good time.

I have no personal opinion on the game either way, it's just amazing the heights that this franchise has reached out of nowhere.

Why should they at this point? They effectively killed the Wii in lieu of Wii U, so they pretty much have to get it out there ASAP. If anything they're late.

Not possible.

Wii U isn't a follow up to one of the biggest failures, and the next Xbox isn't one of the most hotly anticipated consoles following the best selling console ever at the time.

I love how some people get genuinely angry when games like Just Dance do well.

Just Dance 3 doesn't rely on getting the player addicted for points or leveling up, people play it because they have fun playing it.

Bam! This.

Making a game that is fun just to play is a lot harder than making a game that is addictive because it has "RPG elements", leveling, perks, collectibles, achievements, etc. I would say that many games are basically mediocre gameplay wrapped up in addictive mechanisms. The fact that Just Dance or Wii Sports can stand just on their gameplay says something good about them.

I have no personal opinion on the game either way, it's just amazing the heights that this franchise has reached out of nowhere.

I mentioned this in a previous thread as well - if you look at Just Dance reviews on Amazon people love it for very consistent reasons. They can play with their family, it's good exercise, etc. The game is well-designed for the audience it is trying to reach. It's interesting that Just Dance does so much better than the critical darling Dance Central.

Damn some negativity up in here, lol.

I don't think the 360 or Wii did bad considering what they actually are. How many systems in their 6th year have sold as much as 360 has? Shit, they don't even live to a 6 year ever.

Wii in it's 5th year with no games and not even a $100 price point yet sold about a mil give or take.

Considering the lifepoint of the systems themselves and the fact none of them are 100% budget yet, I think they're great sales. They're only disappointing compared to the expectations that none of these systems are in the decline stage of their product cycle, which they all are. It's on the companies to be prepared for this, but considering the age, it's pretty damn impressive.

Just like the 360 got Dreamcasted?

That said, this generation is O.V.E.R!

Am I reading this right? Really? I see the point but that list kicks your premise in the balls because....yes....some games on that list are FAR more deep than others.

I am having trouble getting to 6.3 million without NDS doing crazy good, or something. My shot in the dark:

Xbox 360 = 1700K
PS3 = 930K
Wii = 1060K
3DS = 1600K (or more)
NDS = 500K (has to be over 440K or so)
PSP = 190K (has to be less than 200K or so)
PS2 = 20K (can't be much)

That's only 6 million.

I'm watching TV with the wife, so perfectly possible I missed something.

I think the 3DS could be about 200k higher. From Nintendo's PR report last week, we know the 3DS has crossed the 4 million mark, but no idea by how much. And while Microsoft's PR says the 360 was number one, they typically ignore the handheld market.

I know its always kind of circular logic, but I've always wondered how important people think graphics are versus what they actually are.

I mean the Wii came out after the 360 and PS3, and Wii Sports wasn't pushing anything to its limit, it never stopped folks from buying it.

So I don't know how having better HD graphics is going to turn people off the Wii U. If anything not having a compelling title like Wii SPorts or Mario will turn more people off than anything.

Choas will ensue should 3DS beat 360.

I can't stand the wait.

Dunno what's more disappointing, the hardware numbers or that EviLore is just a normal person instead of that intimidating manga character.

Are you serious?
Assassin's Creed, for example, has stupid combat and AI, but its art design and scenarios are some of the most well crafted in the generation.
You don't even have to dance to ''win'' at Just Dance, ffs.

Ubisoft's complete pr
--------------------------------------------------

Calendar year 2011 was filled with significant milestones for Ubisoft. Today’s NPD data reveals that Ubisoft continues to maintain its leadership as the No. 3 third-party video game publisher in the United States.

The NPD data released today highlights that for the month of December 2011 Ubisoft had the following milestones for the month:

  • For December, Ubisoft is the only publisher with two games in NPD’s top ten list of best-selling games: Just Dance 3 (No. 2) and Assassin’s Creed Revelations (No. 7).
  • Just Dance 3 earns a new achievement as the No. 1 Kinect for Xbox 360 game and the No. 1 PlayStation Move required game for the month of December. Additionally, Just Dance 3 on the Nintendo Wii system is the No. 1 Wii game for three months in a row since it was released in October 2011.
  • The Just Dance franchise has produced the No. 1 Wii game for the past 14 of 15 months of NPD reports (Just Dance 3 three times, Just Dance 2 ten times, Just Dance Summer Party once).
  • Ubisoft is the No. 2 third-party video game publisher for the month of December 2011.

For calendar year 2011, Ubisoft is proud to be:

  • The No. 3 third-party video game publisher for three years in a row.
  • A leader on multiple hardware platforms: Ubisoft is the No. 1 third-party video game publisher on Kinect for Xbox 360 required games with Just Dance 3 and the No. 1 on Nintendo Wii with Just Dance 3, in addition to Ubisoft being the No. 1 third-party publisher on Nintendo 3DS.
  • Included in the list of top 10 retail sellers in the U.S. for all of 2011 with Just Dance 3 (No. 2), Just Dance 2 (No. 9), and Assassin’s Creed Revelations (No. 10).

Comment from The NPD Group's Anita Frazier:

“The Dance genre was the sixth largest of 2011, growing 66% versus 2010. The Just Dance property from Ubisoft nabbed two spots in the top 10 title list for annual 2011, among new physical sales of content at retail in the U.S.”

I guess there's not much to say here. Despite 360's sales, it looks like ppl are ready for the next set of consoles going by overall hw numbers. Nintendo definitely moved on from the Wii too soon. 3DS is also a winner!! /comment

If Sony and MS think they can milk this gen for another couple of years, I think they are mistaken.

I really thought that they both would have much stronger months. I'm wonder how the next 6 months will play out. However, I wouldn't be surprised by price cuts for both in March .

Wait, the dying Wii still sold more then the PS3? What?

At this point, my hope is that Sony cares more about profitability than some mythical race in which there's technically no winner.

If Sony are going to forge ahead with launching a new home console, and all the costs involved with it, they need to make sure the PS3 and even PS2 stay on the market as long as possible, and be sure each and every one of those consoles is sold at the highest profit margin possible.

If we're going to go ahead and use the bizarre GAF method of worrying about profit/loss from almost a decade ago, then the PS3 all but wiped the profit made from the PS1 and PS2 days. Launching a PS4 right now would end them, especially given the Vita being no rockstar.

I want Sony to care about money, not about a race only fanboys care about. Sony can't have insurance carrying them forever. The PS4 is going to be a HUGE investment, possibly more so than the PS3. Because not only do they invest in the tech, they also need to invest in their online infrstructure. The Gamecube made Nintendo money despite only selling around 24 million consoles and comign third. Coming third with between 60 and 70 million consoles sold isn't something to be depressed about. Especially if those last 10 millino console MAKE them money.

We really could see Sony charging for online next gen, simply because they might not be able to afford not to.

No chance. DC had nothing unique about it so people just believed Sony's BS power claims. Even if the 720 is more powerful than the Wii U, the Wii U still has the tablet-ish controller as a huge selling point and you know the media is just gonna eat that up. Nintendo thought this through. Always finding some way to differentiate their systems has been going well

The company in the biggest trouble is Sony. Vita sales in Japan haven't been going well and a dying Wii is STILL selling more than the PS3. Then we have reports that they're not even going to show off anything PS4 related at E3 and possibly won't be launching till late 2013?! Shiiiiit
