Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s next iPad, expected to go sale in March, will sport a high-definition screen, run a faster processor and work with next-generation wireless networks, according to three people familiar with the product.

The company’s manufacturing partners in Asia started ramping up production of the iPad 3 this month and plan to reach full volumes by February, said one of the people, who asked not to be named because the details aren’t public. The tablet will use a quad-core chip, an enhancement that lets users jump more quickly between applications, two of the people said.

Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook is counting on the new model to ward off mounting competition in a market that Apple pioneered two years ago. After its debut in 2010, the iPad emerged as the company’s second-biggest source of revenue -- after the iPhone -- and inspired rival products from Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Samsung (005930) Electronics Co. Apple has sold more than 40 million iPads, generating at least $25.3 billion in sales.

The Cupertino, California-based company has been working on making the iPad compatible with a wireless standard called long- term evolution, or LTE, said one of the people. Carriers such as Verizon Wireless (VZ) and ATT Inc. (T) are rolling out LTE networks to give users faster access to data.

The new display is capable of greater resolution than the current iPad, with more pixels on its screen than some high- definition televisions, the person said. The pixels are small enough to make the images look like printed material, according to the person. Videos begin playing almost instantly because of the additional graphics processing, the person said.

So, it is going to be thicker (extra battery), or will have a drop in battery time (if it stays the same size). Which will cause more (unneeded) bitching?

Sounds great. I wish they'd give artists the option of a tablet with an active stylus. The art industry did heavily support apple when they weren't as profitable.

Welp, I'm in. First IOS device purchase!

Where's the best place to order an Apple product at launch? On the internet I mean. USA.

Jesus. Already making all of the CES tablets obsolete.

To be fair, the new market for Android tablets is the low-cost performers. Android tablet manufacturers can't compete at a high price. I'd expect to see $149/$199 ICS tablets to be the real story of 2012.

Apple is literally leaving money on the table by not addressing the low-end market.

Now really. Apple normally doesn't play the volume/margin game - that's a hard game to play - ask Dell about that one. Tablet technology (particularly screens and GPUs) is still relatively expensive to roll into a device so you can look to produce a large number of devices that are technically inferior because you don't gain any money from the rest of the ecosystem to warrant putting a lot of emphasis on a high quality product, or you can produce a more expensive product that is very high quality such that you gain money from the rest of the ecosystem when people sell high end applications on it.

Apple is on the good side of the ecosystem at the moment.

This has been obvious for awhile. The device is likely going to be thicker, because they can't use Sharp's monitor's presently to make Retina screens.

Can't wait for retina and quad core goodness. Games / text are going to look amazing. Also saves me having to upgrade my tv again maybe since high def video is going to look awesome.

Offloading my iPad 2 to my parents.

Dammit, wife just gave me an ipad2 for Christmas!

I have a 4S and I find Siri mostly useless.

Yep man. iPad 2 for Xmas on my side too :(

I'll be tempted to sell it and pick up the iPad 3 but here is my problem; the iPad 3 will most likely be sold out for some time and the iPad 2 resell value will surely go down a bit. If I sell my iPad 2 then I will be without an iPad for sometime AND have to spend a couple hundred or so to upgrade, meaning I just lost a couple hundred after only a few months of usage :( but its NEW and I'm sure it smells soo good :(

A retina display on a screen that size will be mindblowing.

Imagine trying to posts screenshots of the OS here....

I don't think it's going to be that high of a PPI. The way they worded it in the OP is that the resolution will be higher than 720p but lower than 1080p.

The first comment isn't even worth mentioning, and the second comment is just lol worthy.

I'll be picking up an iPad 3 and a Macbook Pro with a Retina screen when they come out. Can't believe anyone got suckered into getting an iPad 2 for Christmas.

I think there's a good chance that they sell a cut-price iPad 2 in parallel with the 3.

That's a lock for certain.

One thing that Apple learned with the iPhone3GS is that there is a shitload of possibility when you keep the older versions on the market. The 3GS doesn't cost more than a single night's stay in a hotel (approaching motel), and the carriers have been able to keep that device on the market well past its prime.

The only question is what pricing strategy Apple with take with the iPad2. Do they go after the Kindle Fire $199 (hit around $299) or do they get even more creative with carrier bundles and such.
