He sure didn't. He did know it looked like the end of the world though so the point is moot.

He did what he did to effect the hardheaded GL quickly and efficiently. Very Batman of him.

I don't disagree with him revealing his identity to GL considering this is an origin story and I'm guessing they're going to know each other's identities by the end but keeping it off was very un Batman.

We can disagree on that point and either way it doesn't make the issue "lol Justice League"

It was an action packed, fun issue after people complained for four issues that it was moving too slowly.

That makes even less sense. It was stupid when he did it to Guy and it would be doubly stupid in this case.

I liked it when he did it to Guy, but I blame that on Guy being a gross ginger with a shitty haircut.

Modern Guy is superior.

It's one of those rare times Spank is right about anything. It's almost as if he's becoming lucid again now that he's not in a monthly refractory period with his Shoehorn pedo wolverine antics.

It stinks too much of prep time Bats, never mind the fact that the ring would auto-protect him. Dumb writing.

All I see is a woodpecker.

The critical difference between regular books and comics is that comics are ongoing; to pick a particularly extreme example, GL: Brightest Day comes out in paperback in May. I think Blackest Night was over by the time Agent Orange was in hardback.

Also, most of the time when a book is released in HC the HC will have larger font, bigger spacing, etc while the mass market paperback (and to a lesser extent the TPBs) will cram things as small as possible to save on costs, so there's some value to getting the HC. Most of the time the hardcover-trades for comics (instead of the rare "Deluxe" edition from DC or the somewhat more common OSHC from Marvel) are exactly the same size as the eventual TPB.

Precisely.

I've been saying this for years now. Make the hardcover "special", add production materials, and extras like a DVD Special Edition. Get rid of the dust jackets. I like having production art galleries and sketches. Get rid of the dust jackets. As is they're just an annoying format, with crappy dust jackets, and in DC's case - too god damn long a wait for the format I want to purchase.

Like I said, I simply gave up on waiting for certain trades because DC wants to shove the lousy dust jacket format on customers.

I haven't read that issue since high school - that's 21 years ago. I need to see if I still have it and give it another go.

Like I said, I recall enjoying it because Guy Gardner was just so visually offensive. I don't recall it being very prep time just "Please god, somebody shut this jackass up."

And Green Lantern comics are always full of bad writing.

Every time a lantern wastes effort enclosing every bit of debris in a little green ball, General Zod murders a Kryptonian kitten. A giant green slanted roof with a reservoir for debris would be the obvious solution.

That's the problem with logic and funnybooks though, it strips out all the potential fun. Like Ultimates did. ^_^

I like the hardcovers Marvel does that collect two trades (or 12ish issues) and are oversized. They've been making a lot less of them though.

Not sure I've seen these, but do they have dust jackets? And at least they come out after the other two trades have come out. Right?

Yeah they have dustjackets unfortunately (I'm in that camp with you). They do come out after the trades though. I'm pretty sure it's something they mostly do for the Ultimate Universe (ew) now but I've got a few older ones like the Waid FF run and a JMS Spider-Man one so they were definitely more prevalent a few years ago. They're noticeably bigger than the normal trades, sort of halfway between a regular trade and an Absolute.

Got a smart phone recently, and as a result, been getting back into Marvel comics lately after a ~6-7 year reprieve. Lots of catching up to do.

Started with the current Deadpool series (loving the art from Medina and Barberi!), which I'm enjoying immensely. Matter of fact, I think the last comics I read were the early editions of Cable & Deadpool. I'd like to catch up on those again too.

Any series I should be giving priority?! Thinking about doing the Civil War, but I know opinions were pretty divided on that. How's Ultimate Comics: X-Men?

Kinda overwhelming considering the timelines and offshoots I've missed, so I've been playing it safe and sticking to characters/series I know, but I'm definitely open to recommendations!

As an aside, what are you all viewing on? Contemplating getting something better to view on. iPad? Or am I best waiting for the Kindle Fire to become available here in Australia? I've got a lot of old cbr/cbz on CD's somewhere I'd love to dig out too.

I have both of those, "Best of Spider-Man" Vol. 1-5 collecting the vast majority of JMS' run in oversixed artwork, and three big hardcovers for Waid's FF. There's some really great extras too, prefaces, afterwords, manifestos, writers' understanding of the characters, scripts, etc.

They don't do a whole lot of these anymore and save them for the Omnibus releases.

I'm pretty sure those were the only hardcovers those books got and the paperback came out first. Putting out the hardcover first with only six issues is relatively new for Marvel IIRC.

Yeah, nowadays its always "premiere hardcovers"(read: regular ol size hardcover with premiere in their name) and then six months later you get a trade, and that's pretty fucking lame. I mostly read from singles and only buy the oversized/omnibus stuff. Very much looking forward to Remender's Punisher, Hickman's Secret Warriors, and Morrison's New X-men all collected in one big Omnibus this year.

Added the Christopher Priest Black Panther run to my MDCU Must Reads. I've heard / read nothing but good things about it.

Unsubscribed from 11 O'Clock Comics Podcast. I remember now why I don't do comic podcasts.

I don't read my stack immediately, weekly, or monthly. I read it when I have the time and comic podcasts are a taste of the autistic rainbow where everybody reads shit immediately and disseminates their opinions as quickly as possible. :\

However if you do read all your shit straight away, there's plenty to enjoy. Plus they're up Batman/Daredevil's butt like the rest of you guys.

I don't do podcasts, period. I never have a hour or more of free time to just listen to people ramble on about assorted bullshit in entertainment. I got NeoGaf for that, and in small doses!

It's not prep time when you knock some sense into a person when they're being hysterical or behaving irrationally. That's just good sense.

Besides, Johns is probably going to have Batman save the day with some bullsh*t mcguffin he finds on Apokalips, that forces Darkseid to abandon or delay his plans for world domination. How is that worse than him slapping Hal and telling him to get a grip?

I don't know much about Marvel, but "Wolverine and the X-Men" and "Daredevil" are two books that get consistently high praise around here.

When I'm at home, I typically read my comics on my laptop, but when I'm on the go I read them on my Galaxy S. krypt0nian reads them on his iPad. If you're going to choose between a Kindle and an iPad for reading, I'd suggest the iPad because [I think] the screen is larger.

Hope that helps and happy reading! :)

Arthur Adams / Jeph Loeb? It has my blessing.

Red Hulk by Jeph Loeb is also awesome comic fun.

Avengers Prime (?) by Alan Davis / Bendis is excellent too.

However if you pirate these, then I hope a dingo eats your babies. >:|

Definitely. I don't understand why they call it "Marvel Premiere" when it doesn't exactly come oversized or with extra features. At least "DC Deluxe" is oversized. But I still bought all the "Marvel Premiere" volumes of Captain America after the "Captain America Lives" Omnibus because I was impatient, haha. Didn't want to wait two years per Omnibus collection.

Oh, and I'll just throw Brubaker's Captain America run among the must read Marvel titles from the past six to seven years. That's pretty much the only Marvel title I'm reading right now.

Guys guys guys

I finally read Teen Titans 5. That line Cassie says about her lasso? It might be my favorite bit of wordplay in a comic in years. Lobdell is amazing.

Also, i can get Superboy too, should I? I still have room for one more title on my list i think after adding TT.

I think get SuperBoy only because of how much it adds to Teen Titans.
SuperBoy is already being setup to be such a pivotal character in the Teen Titans that having his backstory down is going to be required reading...i did the unthinkable and looked at the synopses of upcoming Teen Titans and yeah SuperBoys is gonna be a big deal.
And yeah Teen Titans 5 was awesome in a sad way....i havent been this disappointed in a team of superheroes since the Xmen tried stopping Hulk during WWH.

At the same time, i dont really like Superman (action comics is cool though), but Supes #5 was too much fun to read, just because ive been reading a bunch of irredeemable and so seeing Supes like this was nice.(is something wrong with me).

I've tried listening to 11 O'Clock comics a few times but can't for the life of me make it through an episode. They are unbearably smug, the shows are way too long and they talk about far too many shitty books that I would not even read if they were free. I think it was one episode where they spent half an hour unironically talking about how great 90s Leifeld was that I had to turn it off. These people have terrible taste.

iFanboy is always great stuff though. Funny hosts, punchy show format and just the right length. They also suffer from next-big-thing-itis but at least the shit they get hype on is the same shit that I like too.

Spike, you haven't even read the book. I found it a fun romp.

Whether or not Johns does that is immaterial as long as its fun.

Superman #5 was great!
I know he's possessed by whatever those three element things are, but he's going to have to face some real consequences for killing those people when he returns to normal.
I just hope the new writers starting in issue 7 don't do some cop out explanation.

Nah.

I just tried the month free last year and it was good, and I grabbed a month subscription card to just blast through some stuff I either have in long boxes that I don't have the inclination to pull out of the attic, or have no interest in ever owning (Sentry original mini).

I still prefer reading my comics on the toilet. :3

I think what irks me most about comics podcasters is how they obviously blow a ton of money on their hobby and then prey upon the good nature of their fans for free shit. It's worse than video game podcasts where they trump up free shit sent to them by publishers. :\

Plus the episode I just signed off with they were defending the mediocre work of one Grant Morrison, so it's not just bad artists they waste time defending unironically.

You are such a beautiful troll TTOB, never change! But I shall bite from a different angle - if Grant Morrison is mediocre (which he's not), who are the best writers in comics, in your opinion? Personally, I can only think of a few things that Morrison has done that are subpar, otherwise that man brings it on a level that most people can barely dream of.

Erik Larsen, Jeph Loeb on Rulk, Fred Perry, Zeb Wells seemed okay from those three issues of Avenging Spiderman. Brian Azzarello, Garth Ennis when he's not phoning it in, Darwyn Cooke. Peter Milligan is a crap shoot.

It's a tough call.

On action superhero comics I want action and fun characterization. On corporate properties like X-Men/Spiderman I want a voice that rings true to the shit I read as a kid, so stopping at Claremont and picking up at Whedon felt natural.

It's hard to follow the writers market of comics because they often get paired with bad artists. Say the allegedly good Morrison run on X-Men, which I cannot reach because Frank Quietly is shoving broken glass and razorblades in my eyeballs.

If you're not going to work with a competent artist, go write a novel. You're not needed here!

You could say my preference is the funnybook auteur like Walt Simonson / Erik Larsen. One man, one mission. One vision. :3

I totally ge the love of Simonson but can't for the life of me get into Larsen, either writing or art. I think we are just polar opposites! Quitely may be a little lumpy, but his body language and background detail is exquisite, he's better than almost any artist for that IMO. Apart from maybe the late greta Seth Fisher, that guy was a genius. But if our opposites hold up, you should persevere with the run since Quitely only does about 6 issues and you'll probably love Igor Kordey's work on it :p

But then again, you do have some good taste, since you like Darwin and Garth so you're not all bad. But really, Morrison could in no way be described as mediocre. Polarising, yes, but he's never been anywhere near the middle of the road in his career!
