Wii U Speculation Thread 2: Can't take anymore of this!!!

That would work well in the Wii U's favor if it does turn out to be less powerful than most are expecting but the real point I was trying to make is that Nintendo has, in the past, been very conservative with their tech demos.

If the Wii U ends up not being able to match the visual fidelity of those two demos that would be very surprising to me.
Ahem, ten years ago, I wouldn't have said that they were conservative with the mix-core Rebirth demo. It took some time to know whether it was all FMV, partly real-time, an idea of what could be done on GC and so on.

The bird demo really remind me the Rebirth one. One of the reasons I'm unable to decide what I should expect of Wii U based on the demo.

Final dev kit in Aug. Pretty close to the wire then. Isn't WiiU meant to ship this year?
Wii U, yeah this year. But the final kits stuff is for the next Xbox, the article from IGN aside mentioning the 20% over Wii U is mostly focused on the next Xbox and made that comparison mostly to show that it was more powerful (by 20%) than the Wii U.
So the rumor started from that IGN remark mixed with the "6 times more power".

Sorry, I have to ask this.
I haven't been following Microsoft thread close enough. So it is really happening? Is it confirmed Microsoft is already working on the next Xbox devkits/system?
And by confirmed I mean something like: "Yeah, we're working on it right now" from an official source
Officially, Microsoft hasn't said a thing yet. Mostly talks and rumors, leaks from developers "working on next gen hardware" and "we are working on the next Xbox". All rumors point to a late 2013 release.

I'm sorry but, Twilight Princess, Star Wars Rouge Squadron, and every Resident Evil on the Gamecube surpassed that tech demo. Even if it was pre-rendered and an FMV, the gamecube surpassed it.

Please, no more 2x and 5x and 6x talk. It means nothing. Literally nothing. They're arbitrary numbers with no grounding. I will be the most annoying person on Neogaf until people finally drop this overly simplified rationale.

But, it also depends on what you consider stronger. The first rumors stated that the graphics would look exactly like the current-gen XBox 360 and PS3's best games...but at 1080p and 60fps. So in one point of view, that would be "lingering around the same" - screenshots of the games wouldn't look any better at all, except for uncompressed 1080p screens.
yeah but assuming most developers push graphics at 30fps and 720p, which is likely, that's decently better visuals than we get now, and that's being conservative. But I still think it's a pointless discussion.

That part is all FMV, the second part was a mixture for FMV and realtime rendering (like Resident evil):
Here's the 2nd part:

Yes, RE surpassed it. It's a very beautiful demo, artistically, but not all that taxing.

Depends on what is meant by 2x, 5x etc. Like, if ported with care, would a game specifically designed for the current HD Twins run at twice the framerate? Twice the resolution? If a game can only be improved in one of those ways, I would lean towards a 2x general processing ability. If it can do both, then its leaning towards 5x.

Has everyone gone in-freaking-sane in this thread?

Just because someone, who works at a studio but says is NOT a software engineer, comes in and says "uhh it only has xbox 360 power" evewryone jumpes to the conclusion that this is correct?

What does he do at that studio? Scrubb the toilets, clean the windows or god knows what... and yet you belive it?

Guys (and gals, of course!), WAKE UP! I have EYES in my head. the japanese garden demo ALONE is more than enough proof that it has quite a power advantage opver the xbox and ps3. Why? It already looks a ton better than anything ive seen on Xbox360 and/or ps3. and that demo was made on an early dev kit, wich even was underclocked due to heating problems... and now there even seems to be a "significant bump" in performance...

And yet you are whining that is may only have xbox 360 power? Seriously?

It HAS more power and there visual proof... what else do you need?

I even belive that no console manufacturer will build an "uberconsole" this gen. No one will risk a FIVE HUNDERET AND NINETY NINE US DOLLAR fiasco! These are diffrent times people!

Agreed. This thread has certainly gone to shit these past couple of days due some unsubstantiated rumors.

Nintendo Direct Hypetrain was just a warmup compared to what will happen at E3 this year. Can't wait for it!

I have a small question: why are people so confident that we could get some news at GDC?

GDC is a very prominent industry event (especially in recent years), and this year Nintendo has some really good opportunities to both showcase Wii U and make deals with business partners, due to how conveniently their booth is positioned. Also, Reggie Fils-Aime said in interviews with CNN and GameTrailers in conjunction with CES in January this year that more information about the new console would be shared between then and E3.

Is the garden demo that impressive? I'm pretty sure the 360/PS3 can run it.

Now I'm positive this thread is stuck in a ground hogs day loop since that shitty developer article was posted again.

Not sure about the garden demo, but the Zelda demo had amazing lighting.

The on stage demo, sure I can see them running it. Not the on floor demo. The on floor demo had some graphic effects can't be used on the current gen without some serious slow down.

I'm confused. Final neXtbox dev kits are due in August but the system isn't releasing until late 2013? That is quite the gap between final dev kits and launch. For comparison, we know Wii U is releasing in less than 10 months and dev kits haven't been finalized yet.

That's the whole fun of rumors. :p
Could be truth, could be misleading. Maybe they meant August 2013, guess we'll know for sure by E3.

MS needs that time to get that 600 watt chip working in the console.

Either the rumor about the final dev kits for the X3 are wrong, or Microsoft is playing it safe and giving devs time to make games for launch.

Nintendo and MS are both going after the non-gamer crowd as well as the enthusiast. I have a tough time seeing MS giving Nintendo one year's worth of free reign with non-gamers especially if those rumors of Nintendo possibly talking to companies like Comcast come to fruition.

how much more power does goku ssj have than a kaio ken times 20 non ssj goku?

just as exact math as " the ps4/720/wiiu will have 7d and be 2745x stronger than anything mankind has ever created!"

Everyone striking WiiU down should know that it will only make it far more powerful than they could possibly imagine.

Can't be, since that same rumor says that one of the components will be mass produced by the end of the year.

Microsoft wants to release it at an affordable price, and while the kits with final specs could be ready by August; doesn't mean that the components will be ready this year, or early next. Much less all of them and at a good price, plus work efficiently. Releasing relatively late, means that they can make sure everything works as expected and that is priced accordingly to what they want.

E3 is going to be very interesting this year.

I think MS is going to own E3 this year.

Wii U looks like it may underwhelm, PS4 is nowhere to be seen (Vita will be Sony's focus) and I think Microsoft pulls back the curtain on the next Xbox.

Yeah. Wonder who will be first with their conferences. Since, the other two will release or hold their cards based on what the one before them shows/talks. Or if MS out of nowhere was planning a launch this year to counter the Wii U. And even Sony, who has been quite silent and always saying "we wont' announce anything".

I think MS is going to own E3 this year.

Who knows though.
Plus owning/winning E3 doesn't mean much in the end. GameCube "won" many E3s and games like GTA usually skipped those E3s; and yet it was the PS2 the one everyone talked about and bought and GTA the game many were talking about.

ehh actually odds are Nintendo will "win" E3. Considering they probably have partnerships and lots of games to show off, probably a surprise or two in there, they'll win. MS will have the usual call of duty, and IF they announce a new console, they won't be announcing games this early.

WiiU got the hardware out of the way mostly, so it's gamesgamesgames for them. So they got this in the bag, assuming they don't fuck up big.

Microsoft's had a bad track record for like the past 2 E3's. Microsoft's obviously got Halo 4 but its been focusing on Kinect so much and Gears trilogy is over with. What else could Microsoft have up its sleeve unless its all playing us for fools with a big Xbox 3 announcement ?

Nintendo has the most to prove but it can easily disappoint us with the launch line up and what the graphics are really going to be like not to mention the pricing.

Microsoft has made it clear that their E3 conference is no longer for the hardcore. If E3 is the big blowout for the XBox3, then count on the system being incredibly Kinect-focused.

I just hope it matches gaf reactions from last year. All those that thought wiiu's sizzle reel looked worse then ps360 footage, until it was revealed to be ps360 footage. GOLD!

How exciting it must have been to discover that the next wave of consoles would be ushered in current gen footage. :|

This is true. I was just talking about E3, though--I realize sales play out differently. Last year Microsoft's E3 was horrible and they dominated the year in sales.

MS will most likely show the NextBox at E3, and may have some tech demos to show but that's pretty much it. The full blowout will be E3 2013. If it were any closer to being out than that we'd know already because no one is worse at keeping secrets than MS.

I do actually, which is why I don't expect a massive graphical leap. Everything Microsoft has said in the past year points toward a more affordable machine focused on Kinect.
