Keep in mind that the Vita's first week sales in Japan were great. We won't have a clear picture of the Vita's performance in rest of the world for a another couple months.
But you are clearly judging Vita's performance (worldwide) now.

Yeah, if SE released KH:BbS and CC:FF7 on PSN, a FF:Type-0 QHD port and showed FFX, I'd be a lot more excited for Vita personally. I'm getting one when Gravity Rush comes out, but I want some SE stuff shown.Square-Enix needs to announce FF: Type 0, with graphic upgrades, for a worldwide Vita release.
That would get me to buy it.
While they are at it, I wish they would convert FFVII: Before Crisis to a PSN downloadable release. :/
You would figure a launch (a staggered one at that where you could get it a week early if you wanted), would be able to put up better numbers than that.
I don't see how somewhere around 300,000 is a good launch. It's not good, it could probably qualify as a disaster if expectations weren't so low. I guarantee if somehow Wii U came out this month instead of Vita and it's numbers were flat out said to be 300,000 in it's opening launch week or two, people would be calling it one of the biggest disasters ever.
As far as videogame launches go, what exactly in history has been worse among major console/handheld makers? The Saturn launch maybe?
the rose-colored glasses wearing optimists won't even acknowledge your reservation.well, it says estimated actual sales AND preorders. People seem to be overlooking the latter which might lead to some crying foul if/when the NPD and GFK figures leak.
You guys are silly. 200-300k sales in NA--which includes nearly 5 months worth of pre-order sales by the most ardent of gaming aficionados is somehow an indicator of future success. Be more honest, guys. The Vita will be okay in a mobile console market that has a lower maximum sales ceiling than in previous portable generations. I'd think lifetime 35-40 million seems about right, give or take. Whether that is considered a failure or not is a function of initial expectations. It won't outsell the PSP or DS. The market has changed and is receding. But wait, I was told the Vita was doomed?
I'm not sure calling this good scores by going from pretty low predictions is a good thing for the console.

awesome going for Vita, simple the best gaming handheld device by far
I doubt that. Well, maybe a few, but far from everyone. 300k for a system outside the holiday period is not bad, especially if there were a lot of spectics around it's sales to begin with.I guarantee if somehow Wii U came out this month instead of Vita and it's numbers were flat out said to be 300,000 in it's opening launch week or two, people would be calling it one of the biggest disasters ever.

To repeat my earlier post:
I find the total LTD sales of 1.2M disappointing for a product that was on the market for 11.5 weeks in total
10 weeks of sales in Japan
1 week of early pre-order sales in NA
Half a week of sales across NA/Latin America/EU/Singapore
Skiesofwonder said:Asia accounts for at LEAST 600k (probably more like 650K)
What did the PSP and 3DS sell in their first month in europe and north america?
At Sony spinning this to be "good". Talk about some weak sales.
I think PSP did close to 1 mil in its first week. 3DS did around 750k in its first week. What did the PSP and 3DS sell in their first month in europe and north america?
Lol when you have to revise your post multiple times to make sense to try to get your point across you may want to rethink it.
Oh man, where the hell are you guys getting the idea that Asia is such a huge gaming market? This is hilarious.
Let's have an example. Here's sales for the Gran Turismo series: http://www.polyphony.co.jp/english/list.html
In Japan, it's over 10 million. For NA, it's 22 million. Europe is 32 million. And Asia? It hasnt even crossed a million yet. Maybe that segment of the world hates cars or something.
Look at how many PS3s were shipped to parts of Asia for launch, or any other hardware device. It's not nearly as big as some of you are making it out to be. Not even close.
North America (first week):
3DS: 440k
PSP: > 500k
Europe:
3DS: 303k
PSP: ??? (I've seen some crazy numbers saying it sold close to a million, but not sure if true)
No idea on first month sales (both were released at the end of the month, similar to the Vita).
So what were expectations?

given the amount of doom and gloom of all the recent analysts, it's appropriately exceeding expectation.
Don't know what to think about those numbers but I hope publishers think it is decent enough to actually make games for it.
Love my Vita so much.
What's the per unit margin on the Vita?
But you are clearly judging Vita's performance (worldwide) now.
"Nintendo sold slightly less than 400,000 Nintendo 3DS units in March after the $250 system hit stores March 27, said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview earlier today."North America (first week):
3DS: 440k
Expectations are very often the measurement for success. And this is what's intriguing to me. People expected it to bomb hard and now that its doing decent (at best) now its some sort of break out success.
And 1.9 million in NA and 4.6 million in Europe according the website. How about we look at GT5 for a more current/relevant comparison?
Japan: 640,000
Asia: 260,000
between a small loss and a small gain per unit. it hasn't been clear.
3DS was 440k US only. NA was probably close to 500k.North America (first week):

PSP was hyped beyond belief, comparing it to Vita's first week sales is a pretty big fallacy. Everyone was looking forward to the PSP in the beginning.
The 3DS is probably the best comparison and it's beating Vita handily in every region.
So no price drop?
I'm not sure calling this good scores by going from pretty low predictions is a good thing for the console.
IMHO it's more likely 2/3rd of that went to EU. But we'll see.Have to admit, much better than what I was expecting. So between 550k-600k units were sold during it's western launch, probably 2/3rd of that to the USA.

Vita essentially fixed all my problems with handheld gaming, though I still loved handheld gaming before this gen. Now it just needs games like Gravity Rush, and more like it, to come out.

Expectations are very often the measurement for success.
Nintendo Co., the worlds biggest maker of video-game consoles, said it sold almost 440,000 units of the 3DS handheld game player during its first week of U.S. sales in late March.

So, then the important thing that people are overlooking is the attach rate. Compared to other launches, is a 1.5+ attach rate pretty good? Standard? Awful?
