Vita sells (not ship) 1.2M Worldwide as of Feb 26, exceeds expectations, Software 2+M

Keep in mind that the Vita's first week sales in Japan were great. We won't have a clear picture of the Vita's performance in rest of the world for a another couple months.

But you are clearly judging Vita's performance (worldwide) now.

Square-Enix needs to announce FF: Type 0, with graphic upgrades, for a worldwide Vita release.

That would get me to buy it.

While they are at it, I wish they would convert FFVII: Before Crisis to a PSN downloadable release. :/
Yeah, if SE released KH:BbS and CC:FF7 on PSN, a FF:Type-0 QHD port and showed FFX, I'd be a lot more excited for Vita personally. I'm getting one when Gravity Rush comes out, but I want some SE stuff shown.

At Sony spinning this to be "good". Talk about some weak sales. ~600,000 sold in the west makes half of those numbers from Japan where the system is already lagging.

You would figure a launch (a staggered one at that where you could get it a week early if you wanted), would be able to put up better numbers than that.

I don't see how somewhere around 300,000 is a good launch. It's not good, it could probably qualify as a disaster if expectations weren't so low. I guarantee if somehow Wii U came out this month instead of Vita and it's numbers were flat out said to be 300,000 in it's opening launch week or two, people would be calling it one of the biggest disasters ever.

As far as videogame launches go, what exactly in history has been worse among major console/handheld makers? The Saturn launch maybe?

Understood. I would agree, but I don't know anything about how sales should look on a device that launches in the US in February. We all know the sales have been bomba-grade in Japan, but it's too early to say what it is doing or is going to do in the US.

well, it says estimated actual sales AND preorders. People seem to be overlooking the latter which might lead to some crying foul if/when the NPD and GFK figures leak.
the rose-colored glasses wearing optimists won't even acknowledge your reservation.

But wait, I was told the Vita was doomed?
You guys are silly. 200-300k sales in NA--which includes nearly 5 months worth of pre-order sales by the most ardent of gaming aficionados is somehow an indicator of future success. Be more honest, guys. The Vita will be okay in a mobile console market that has a lower maximum sales ceiling than in previous portable generations. I'd think lifetime 35-40 million seems about right, give or take. Whether that is considered a failure or not is a function of initial expectations. It won't outsell the PSP or DS. The market has changed and is receding.

Just seems to be the reality of things. Spin doctors will spin.

I'm not sure calling this good scores by going from pretty low predictions is a good thing for the console.

PR is gonna PR. I just expect GAF to be able to separate truth from bullshit, no matter how many hundreds they did or didn't drop at launch. To no suprise, the positive spinners are the same that dropped $600 last week and have put 30+ hours in already (where do you find the time). Not a problem, just adds context to some commentaries.

I'm not sure how good these numbers are. The seem ok to me and no more than that but you are right that if this was the Wii U Neogaf would be in overdrive the 'nintendo doomed' posts would be in full force. No doubt about it!!

I doubt that. Well, maybe a few, but far from everyone. 300k for a system outside the holiday period is not bad, especially if there were a lot of spectics around it's sales to begin with.

Without having numbers, i think that it is a pretty safe bet to say that Virtual Boy or Saturn had the worse launches yeah. I'm leaning more towards Virtual Boy.

To repeat my earlier post:

I find the total LTD sales of 1.2M disappointing for a product that was on the market for 11.5 weeks in total

10 weeks of sales in Japan
1 week of early pre-order sales in NA
Half a week of sales across NA/Latin America/EU/Singapore

bahahaha try hard

Asia accounts for at LEAST 600k (probably more like 650K)

Oh man, where the hell are you guys getting the idea that Asia is such a huge gaming market? This is hilarious.

Let's have an example. Here's sales for the Gran Turismo series: http://www.polyphony.co.jp/english/list.html

In Japan, it's over 10 million. For NA, it's 22 million. Europe is 32 million. And Asia? It hasnt even crossed a million yet. Maybe that segment of the world hates cars or something.

Look at how many PS3s were shipped to parts of Asia for launch, or any other hardware device. It's not nearly as big as some of you are making it out to be. Not even close.

Don't know what to think about those numbers but I hope publishers think it is decent enough to actually make games for it.

Love my Vita so much.

What did the PSP and 3DS sell in their first month in europe and north america?

North America (first week):

3DS: 440k

PSP: > 500k

Europe:

3DS: 303k

PSP: ??? (I've seen some crazy numbers saying it sold close to a million, but not sure if true)

No idea on first month sales (both were released at the end of the month, similar to the Vita).

How about we look at GT5 for a more current/relevant comparison?

Japan: 640,000
Asia: 260,000

oh wow.

600k Between NA and EU is about the best you could hope for when you launch a console in Feb but what are they going to do in the next few months to have steady sales continue? Japan slowed to a crawl months ago and there is really nothing on the horizon there to help in the mean time and things look to follow the same trend in the west looking at the release calendar.

PSP was hyped beyond belief, comparing it to Vita's first week sales is a pretty big fallacy. Everyone was looking forward to the PSP in the beginning.

The 3DS is probably the best comparison and it's beating Vita handily in every region.

So what were expectations?

Depends on who you ask.

For some, best portable hardware on the market should = best selling hardware on the market, and anything less than outselling the competitor with decidedly superior hardware is not #winning.

For others, not bombing in launch sales is enough to be #winning.

I think in a market adjusted for the presence of smartphones and such devices that compete for your mobile gaming fix, lowered sales expectations should have been the order of the day. Again, the market is shrinking on dedicated portable consoles. For young adults, anyway.

The 3DS was also (rightly) seen as selling mediocrity for its launch.

EDIT - By my math the Vita had to sold ~300K in American and ~300k in Europe. I mean its now slightly under 600,000 units in Japan. Which leaves ~600,000 units to play with. Pretty shitty comparing with the above. Also to note that the system isn't doing so hot in Japan now.

given the amount of doom and gloom of all the recent analysts, it's appropriately exceeding expectation.

And this is what's intriguing to me. People expected it to bomb hard and now that its doing decent (at best) now its some sort of break out success.

Vita essentially fixed all my problems with handheld gaming, though I still loved handheld gaming before this gen. Now it just needs games like Gravity Rush, and more like it, to come out.

I am disappointed in Japan's performance. It makes the LTD number look really bad.

The only number we have to judge is the LTD number. We won't have a clear picture of the Vita's performance outside of Japan for a another couple months.

Solid sales and well deserved, but that press release makes me want to smack the idiot who forced in the buzz terms "connect", "discover", "share" etc to the boilerplate. Strategy talk is not external facing language

+1

Oh man was the hype was palpable for the PSP. And I did love it for the most part. Still have my launch PSP-1001, and it still works great.
So no price drop? :(

ask again in May when we have some trending.

The announcement is probably more symbolic than anything else. Vita has been under fire since 3DS dropped price, and iOS gaining mainstream attention overwhelmingly. The press, mainstream and gaming ones, mostly predicted Vita to fail. One blogger even think it would not be launched in US. ^_^ Plus opportunistic gamers hoping Vita to drop price.

The 1.2 mil sold-to number is just a beacon amidst the positive feedback of existing owners. What Sony needs to do now is to improve the software quickly and surely to move Vita further ahead. Nothing else matters.

Have to admit, much better than what I was expecting. So between 550k-600k units were sold during it's western launch, probably 2/3rd of that to the USA.

To clarify, the 303k for EU was for 2 days, not the whole week.

3.61 million worldwide after it's first month
15 million worldwide after its first year

I'm going to predict vita hits 7 million after its 1st year.

Yeah I agree, the only small issue I have is I think the Dpad should have been below the analog. Can't wait for Gravity Daze, hopefully Sony will announce something that will really push the system at E3.

Expectations are very often the measurement for success.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-...-u-s-debut-has-great-start-citing-npd-1-.html

Nintendo Co., the world’s biggest maker of video-game consoles, said it sold almost 440,000 units of the 3DS handheld game player during its first week of U.S. sales in late March.

This was after NPD data was released.

And 1.9 million in NA and 4.6 million in Europe according the website.

We're talking an Asia/Japan comparable market difference. Vita sold probably 560-585k Japan alone of this 1.2m figure, we're trying to figure the rest of Asia comparably. Vita's probably closer to GT5 in that comparison versus GT as a whole, given PlayStation overall has grown in strength in Asia this gen while simultaneouly collapsing in Japan.

Comparison time:

Vita = approx North America, Europe, Latin America, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia combined for about 600,000 system sales.

3DS = in its opening week it sold around 400,000 in the US, 439,206 units in Europe, 3DS figure does not include data from South America, Australia and other smaller territories.

DS = Nintendo originally slated 300,000 units for the U.S. debut; 550,000 were shipped, and just over 500,000 of those sold through in the first week. Staggered launch in other regions later, but the DS met unexpectedly high demand in the United States, selling 1 million units by December 21, 2004

PSP = Sony's numbers that 500,000 units had been sold in the first two days in NA, selling more than 185,000 units in the UK alone, and nearly one million units sold across Europe in the first week

GBA = the 2001 launch of the Game Boy Advance, which sold around 530,000 units in its first week in the Japanese market, and 540,000 in its first week in the United States

Can't go back any further, but the Vita sales don't stack up well with any other recent launch. Sony included numbers in every single region outside of Japan it launched in, and every other major launch you could almost match that number in just ONE region.

What truly matters is if they can maintain a steady buyrate and I'm not sure they can with the current line-up of games and whats on the horizon. I see a huge drop coming and average to poor sales over the summer. I'm hoping Sony has an ace up their sleeve at E3.

I really want a PS Vita but I just can't justify the price of the system + memory card if I only want it to play titles like Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and Phantasy Star Portable 2 (which is no longer on the PS Store in America).

I guess it would have been too much for Sony to not simply give us the numbers for each region. Taking into account a lot of those sales are from Asia I wonder what the split between US and EU was. My guess is they sold more units in EU.

So, then the important thing that people are overlooking is the attach rate. Compared to other launches, is a 1.5+ attach rate pretty good? Standard? Awful?

I don't know what to think about if Sony is making money.

Maybe on the hardware.

Software was been selling at a discount, the B2G1 deals have to be coming from the top right?

Profit on memory cards and other peripherals
