Pub. in Talks For Binding of Isaac 3DS [Update: Rejected Due To Religious Content]

Nicalis confirmed on Twitter that they're the ones who will be handling the port if they get the go-ahead. Can't be assed to find the link, though.

@EdmundMcMillen
Attention: After a long internal debate Nintendo has decided NOT to allow the Binding of Isaac on the 3ds. :(

As many assumed the reasons were due to the games "questionable religious content". Thank GOD Steam exists!

.

Ridiculous. I thought Nintendo didn't have a content-based approval process anymore, as long as the game stays within the bounds of an M rating...

He mentioned this:

Seriously though, i gotta again publicly thank steam for fully supporting Isaac and not requiring ESRB or censoring its published games.

So was Isaac never even ESRB rated, I assume?

First SMB and now this. I already played it on PC and wouldn't pick up a 3DS version, but this reeks of typical Nintendo.

Isaac just might be an extreme case.

It's also probably why he mentioned previously not to expect it on any console, ever.

It's seriously bummer news, either way, I would have been overjoyed to have portable Isaac.

So, would the game be refused an ESRB M qualification?

Hard to say. The ESRB is a significantly more reactionary and arbitrary body than the MPAA. It wouldn't particularly surprise me if they decided that outright rejection of religious-themed content was acceptable.

What does SMB have to do with this.

The game has really questionable content in it that could push it pass an M rating. It's as simple as that. Also, I don't see it on any other platforms besides Steam.

Apple has no review system, but if they got enough complaints afterwards, it would be taken down.

Last time i checked, they had some kind of content rejection, most famously no porn allowed or that game that criticized phone manufacturers.

Nintendo would reject any game that isn't ESRB-rated, so I'm not quite sure McMillen's account is completely accurate. I dunno.

Since you need some money to even submit it to the ESRB, maybe it was just them finding out if Nintendo would even take it, given they got it ESRB rated. Dunno.

Unfortunate, but not really that surprising. I don't think Nintendo can be blamed (unless it shows up on a Sony or MS system). I put 40 hours into Isaac and it's definitely one of the most adult games I've played. I would be pretty surprised to see it show up on any console.

you speak so well
I knew Nintendo would shoot this down, oh well. I hope they don't stop here and shop around to get it on Vita - I've been teased with a portable version and now I need it!

Somehow I doubt Sony would be any more amenable to a game with BoI's subject content.

As he Tweets read, Nintendo was fine with nearly all the content. The religious stuff is what messed some of it up. There is more to it than we know.

LOL, Sony is harder on this type of thing than Nintendo. Stop living in the early 90s bro

Does anyone know if they ever even tried to get it ESRB rated?

Nintendo, themselves, might not have cared about the content, but might have felt it was impossible for the game to not get an AO rating.

It's another game that won't be any of Nintendo's systems?

Did you play the game? I didn't find the content all that questionable, maybe that's just me.

You think this would be any different from any other platform holder?

It's out on Steam and on European retail shelves apparently. Maybe other platform holders would be willing to face the media and parents on this one? I don't know if Nintendo was the first one they pitched or the last.

Good for you? If this game was rejected it's because:
1. Devs didn't want to submit it to the ESRB and Nintendo doesn't allow non-ESRB rated games or
2. They submitted it and it was possibly going to get rated AO and Nintendo doesn't allow AO rated games

Nintendo doesn't really reject or censor games based on content anymore

His tweets were pretty clear, Nintendo rejected it based on the religious content, they did not care about the violence and poops.

Not surprising. If it was going to be rejected by Nintendo it would be because of the religious content as said before. That is a different beast than sex or violence.

Edit: The other content would make it a no go as well. Let's be real here.

Every time I think about this being on the 3DS I laugh. There was just no way.

A naked kid using his own tears, blood, urine, and excrement to fight demons, his bible-thumping abusive mom, and giant vaginas. One of his power ups is to hang himself with a noose, another one is to have a coat hanger through his head. Not to mention other dead, rotting kids littering the levels.

Cool game though.

Come on now. You understand why this would be acceptable in the European market. You know why this wouldn't get by under an AO rating in the states.

No platform holder would back this. The risk is high with little payoff.

I don't find the game's content that questionable. You don't find the game's content questionable. Joe Fuckwhit will. Gaffers like ourselves exist in a bubble...as a whole, we find subject matter permissible that your average idiot wouldn't. It sucks, but it's the truth.
