Ys: Oath in Felghana added to the Steam registry

Oh, very sweet! :D Playing Ys 7 on Vita right now and it is great. Going to buy Oath of Felghana next, but I might get it on Steam now!

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Said it in the other thread, so I'll say it again here, where it's even more relevant:

Me in the other thread said:
Seriously, if anyone's on the fence about buying this... just fucking do it. It's an incredibly fun action-RPG that's addictive as anything the genre's ever offered.

I remember when I passed on the series back when Ys VI came out on PS2 due to listening to the middling reviews. I felt pretty stupid when I finally tried the games, because now it's one of my favorite series ever.

I was about ready to pass when people were complaining about the lackluster story and dialogue. I'm glad I didn't. The game stands well enough thanks to the gameplay alone.

Already have this for psp, but I will buy again to support xseed and convince them to bring more falcom games to steam.

In this case I'm afraid I wouldn't be interested unless there were a physical copy available. There are certain games I'm fine buying digitally, but Ys is not amongst them. I still have my Japanese PC copy of Felghana and it's oh so good. It'll never happen, but I'd lose my shit if something like that were offered in the US. For everyone else who is less crazy than me, Felghana is the best in the series and absolutely needs to be played.

This looks like a pretty good animu Diablo clone. How much character customization is in it? Is it just straight linear gear upgrades or do you get a lot of control in your fighting style?

It's a (very) fun action game with a good combat system and excellent boss fights, but beside that there isn't really too much depth.

I already have the PC version of Oath, but it makes me happy if this means more people get to experience this game. IMO it's a perfect game. I wish more games had it's length too. Short, but oh so sweet.

I'm somewhat curious about this. I assume it's a lack of a strong Japanese presence (and the fact PC gaming isn't exactly hot over there)?

Quite the opposite. PC gaming is huge in Japan.
The doujin scene is proof of this.

As I understand it, the problem is Valve.

All the more reason we need games like this, Recettear, and what have you to be a success.

PC Gaming is huge in regards to certain segments. The kind of segments that rarely get localized releases because they're made by indies, or consist of porn.

Recettear, the eXceed series, and so on are basically indie games.

The opportunities are there. We just need to keep the door open.

I remember some kind of Japanese company or service starting up last year devoted to getting more official English translations of doujin games made, and vice versa for western indie games. Their first project was the Japanese version of Machinarium.

Great to see this, hope it's announced soon. I've bought all the psp releases and it looks like I'll have to double dip to show my support.

Hopefully we can get everything through Tits 3 at some point and it would be nice if they did well enough to maybe get Falcom to do PC ports for Zero and Ao or at least let someone do a port but I'm not holding my breath.

Since we are talking about Japanese games on steam are there any VN's on steam at all? I would think some of the ones with little or no sex scenes might do well.

It is unfortunate that there are a ton of japanese doujin / indie games that are quite damn good but never get to see the light of day in english unless by a fan translation group. Hell Y's went through the same thing for awhile as well. If a group or publisher can take advantage of this they can control a niche market to themselves. Translating and putting Japanese games on Steam can be worthwhile.

Stuff like Rosenkreuzstilette deserves more love. And everyone knows of Cave Story. Some of us probably played Princess Maker 2 on DOS from the leaked english beta while there has been more modern versions of the series. Even flash games like Rose&Camellia have an impressive level of quality for what they are. Even something crazy like Vanguard Princess which was made using Fighter Maker but from a former Capcom employee lol.

I do understand the stereotypes though, a ton of japanese indie/doujin are ridiculous and a ton of them are visual novels / adventure games. If it isn't those two, it's a Touhou game lol. But there is a lot of other good too, just hope we can see them on Steam someday.

I'm in. I think the only Ys game I've played was III on the Genesis way back in the day which I remember enjoying quite a bit.

I've only ever played Ys I and II on VC and five minutes of Ys III. Does this one pick up right after II or do I actually have to play og III to get this one?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
People should buy this game.

Whoops, didn't see a new thread for this was made.

Hope they also get other games up there that they haven't localized yet. I'm sure Origin is on the way, and probably Ark of Napishtim. Oath in Felghana and Trails will probably be the two games that start things off since they're the easiest to deal with, all they need to do is put the PSP text in the PC version and they're done (well, and QA I guess).

Ys 1&2 will probably be next, Wyrdwad hinted that they might be able to release Complete instead of Chronicles and insert an option to use the new music from Chronicles. Neither option is really great though, since both would be limited to really low resolutions, but Complete is a better version of the game than Chronicles so it would be good if we got that.

Hope these games do well, they really deserve too. In the long run I think Falcom RPGs on Steam could do really well, and a lot of companies (lol Konami) will probably kicking themselves for not jumping on this sooner.

It's pretty much standalone. At most there might be a few subtle references to Ys 1&2, but I don't really remember any off the top of my head.

Definitely double-dipping on this.

I don't know how a Japanese studio who made PC games for years can be seen as now embracing it, haha.

Did he say embracing PC? No, he said embracing Steam, which is definitely something that could hugely benefit companies that are producing PC games in Japan but not distributing them in any way that Western PC gamers can tap into easily.

Unless these ports sell godly I think the only way we see the other Trails games is through Aeria's Google Translate/Crowd Source translations for smartphones.

If we assume the level of sales Ys is generating on PSP are actually sufficient to keep alive localizations in the West and the level of sales TiTS is generating are not, I don't really think anything like "godly" is going to be necessary here. Steam is a drastically more plausible route for this series than anything else is at this point.

Also, there are no Aeria translations.

As I understand it, the problem is Valve.

This is pretty much exactly the opposite of what people actually involved in these things have reported in the past, so I think you're going to have to elaborate on this a bit.

As much as I'd like to, not sure I can. But from what I've heard, they're the biggest obstacle.

Just checked some vids of this on youtube, looks fun as hell. Also dat soundtrack, very Castlevania-y.

EDIT: That song sounded so familiar to me, turns out I've been listening to it for years on an SSH remix.

Cool to see localizations of Japanese games showing up on Steam, though what I want most is to see more Japanese developers making PC games. I guess this could be seen as a tiny step in that direction.

I don't even need Steam. Hell, I don't even need US distribution. I just want things running in Windows and on my PC!

One thing that bugged me with the PSP release was the compressed music. It will be awesome playing it again without that.

My best guess (since other localization people have had similar stories when working with Japanese publishers):

"Steam won't let us release our little game for $40!"

Well, it isn't exactly their priority yet, but I would say the wind is changing.

XSEED coming on Steam, Capcom doing more and more PC ports (even for fighting games), Square Enix producing/publishing multiplatform games with a PC version in, Namco Bandai publishing a PC exclusive (The Witcher 2), Kojima promising a PC version of both Project Ogre and MGS 5, Yakuza's creator claiming that consoles are going to decline i nfavor of tablets and PCs...

It looks like Japan is finally taking notice that the PC market exists, at last.

As much as I'd like to, not sure I can.

Forgive me if I privilege the information provided by people actually operating in the field over overwrought, unsourced hearsay.

Bit of a cart/horse situation here, unfortunately. Without the infrastructure for PC indie distribution that's really helped things take off in the West (Steam + other services like Desura + bundles + big network of blogs like RPS + lots of attention on forums like SA and GAF) I suspect it'd be hard to get professional developers transitioned into targeting PC on niche releases if they aren't already experienced at it like Falcom, although there's certainly a rich doujin scene to draw on.

My best guess (since other localization people have had similar stories when working with Japanese publishers):

"Steam won't let us release our little game for $40!"

Or with fatal crash bugs that occur frequently on certain setups/OS configurations, or without resolution options above 640x480, etc. etc.

I would say Japan always had a PC Market, but they never gone beyond the indie / doujin realm of things and there really isn't much of a distribution there except maybe 2chan. There are Japanese PC Games, and a good amount of them. But they're pretty hard to find if you're searching in English and unless a fan translation comes out, or it gets ported to a handheld/console no one outside of Japan would probably hear of them. If the developer is willing to work with Steam, then it helps everyone. More PC games from japan for us to play.

Maybe I should start a thread with a list of japanese pc indie/doujin games lol.

Will support this. Japanese games is the one area where Steam is lacking and if this is a success, I hope more publishers will jump on board.

Woah, I bet it took a lot of effort.
They had to translate... What? "New Game", "Load" and "Quit"?
Hey man, the credits are pretty hard to translate! That will take like a day! SHEESH!

Though, to be serious, the majority of work was probably much more about publishing and distribution plans.

On topic, I love Ys III so far as I am playing it on the PSP, but I hope there is something extra in the package that would warrant double dipping (JP VO track would be nice).

Edit: I think Ys 3 is probably first because it both is arguably the best Ys game (at least with a modern translation) and is an amazing package (VO, both original and remixed OST, great gameplay).
