CBS Interactive (GameSpot parent company) buys Giant Bomb

No way on the $20 million stake. TechCrunch, which gets close to 10x the traffic of Giantbomb only sold for $25 million.

I'm going to say that I don't know what I'm talking about before saying this, but... Isn't it very likely that Shelby Bonnie owned a massive controlling interest in that company? Guys like Jeff, Dave and Will probably held very minor pieces.

For Jeff to have a $20MM stake would probably mean that Giant Bomb (and Comic Vine?) sold for at least $100MM, probably much more because I'd imagine Snider's share is the same as Jeff's. And that's not even close to possible.

Bottom line; Wikipedia is not to be trusted and talking about another person's money makes me feel dirty.

Lol would be SHOCKED if anything or anyone at GiantBomb went for $20 million. The only way that happened is if CBS put a ton of investment in it and it is unlikely after an acquisition of this type unless they are going to fundamentally change the way GB does business.

To proclaim that much after the buying of a company is unheard of unless there is a split.

20 million to CBS is nothing at all. Many big name radio hosts on the CBS radio platform make 10 million each (and most shows are duo's).

Giantbomb could go for 20 million because of what the vision for the website is. You don't just pay out for what it is now, but for what it can become, and all the information the website has.

At the end of the day, I want to know if the guys are pissed or not. Being owned by a massive company like CBS is never good. They limit what you can say, and do similar things as to what happened to Jeff at Gamespot.

I don't think Ryan would be calling up GameSpot staff to appear on the Bombcast. I assume GameSpot staff will appear in Giant Bomb video content, however, maybe during live show events or similar. What I'm really hoping for is more podcast content. Now they have financial security; now they don't have to worry about bandwidth; now they've got access to great minds like John Davison. I really hope they start putting out more podcast content.

Ya I don't see how Jeff was able to leverage that much of a stake in Giantbomb to get that ammount.

Would be pretty awesome if they make a 2nd podcast with Dave, Drew and whoever else.

I'd love to see a Patrick-based podcast -- maybe something like an On the Media or Studio 360-type magazine show where he talks about the latest news with some Giant Bomb staffers, maybe interviews a developer or something like that. Weekly show. Go Patrick! Launch!

The IP that added the $20 million number has received warnings for unsourced edits. Also, is Jeff Jewish? Because half that user's edits involve adding the fact that people are Jewish to the first paragraph (which he received another warning for).

I love the irony of CBS firing someone then five years later buying up an entire site he co-founded.

Guess that Kane and Lynch money wasn't worth it, eh Gamespot?

Can they fix GameFAQs?

I've never voluntarily visited 4chan, but for me Gamefaqs was like 4chan without the pictures. Forgive me GAF I used to be a Gamefaqs member a long time ago. I was in college and it was the first time I had free internet access. Gamefaqs nextgen forums were like every troll banned from every site merged into one.

Everyone is saying Davison will run off again... isn't he super high up on the corporate ladder now?

Besides being offered a position as a god or something....

That sucks for them.

As someone who knows people who worked for CBS when they basically ran all of radio. Good luck on having an original opinion about anything. If Gertsman thought Gamespot was bad, then Giant Bomb is fucked.

giantbomb was bought by gamespot to be giantbomb. the guys can still run the site as they see fit and i think the site will remain the same until later in the year. it's when things dont pan out, or extra dollar signs can be milked that higher ups start slamming their dicks around layoffs and changes will start happening.

tested as we know it i think is done. where as the bomb guys are still running the show will and norm are now just part of it. tested is going to see far bigger changes than giantbomb and im sure not all of them will be good.

I used to love Gamefaqs, not for the posters obviously, but because it doesn't allow images or links of any kind, no avatars, no giant signatures, just text. I still even keep my old account logged in at all times to collect karma that doesn't do anything just in the off chance that the site becomes bearable again.

aren't the gamespot and gamefaqs boards the same thing kinda?

The FAQs themselves are still pretty great.

i remember when gamefaqs was bought by cbs, they said that they would stay independent and cjayc assured users that they wouldn't see gamespot being integrated into the site.

lol at how that turned out, they share forums have direct links to each other sites and cross advertising. what a joke.

Do what? They have the longest podcast out of any other gaming podcasts I listen to.

All the noises they are making sound good to me, if it means those guys at giantbomb get to do what they do with the added safety that cbs brings then thats great. People getting there noses out of shape because of it need to grow the fuck up, its a job at the end of the day these dudes need to eat. Its like the best of both worlds, john and jeff is like a dream combo.

I think i hate this. I was under the impression that giantbomb was made as an indie alternative to these major game sites.

Super bummed :(

Pffft, I used to be a mod there. Back in the day LUE was 4chan lite.

Man I sure miss all the great gamefaqs personalities and original video content.

I don't like all this money talk, perhaps it's part of being British (we don't tend to celebrate the rich) I prefer to think of Jeff and the crew as enthusiasts on a moderate income, it all feels a bit too commercial/mainstream atm, GB as it was felt like an rogue enthusiast site, a candle in the wind, now they feel like a power torch sponsored by energiser, I supported GB because they were an underdog at the time, not sure how I feel now tbh, I'm not sure I want GB to have that 'commercial shine', that isn't what GB is about imo.

Wow that certainly doesn't look like it would get fucking obnoxious to look at every day

It's a welcome banner made out of fucking post-its man. Looks like it took a lot of effort to make, but NO I don't think it's meant to serve as a permanent replacement for the outside windows it's covering.
