Bungie: Do they deserve more credit?

Whenever you read about the elite developers in the industry you typically see names like Valve, Blizzard, and some of the Nintendo EAD teams. A developer I think belongs in that category but does not receive enough credit is Bungie. Everyone knows that the Xbox wouldn't even exist today without Halo: Combat Evolved. We all bought an Xbox just for that game. It showed FPSs could actually be fun on consoles and control well.

Three years later they took it a step further. Halo 2, the first truly great online game for consoles. I know the campaign had its issues, but a lot of that was because Bungie was so ambitious. The multiplayer was were it truly shined. It wasn't just the gameplay though, the system they created to join and invite friends was amazingly simple and quick. From what I know, Bungie worked really closely with Microsoft on Xbox Live. It definitely shows, because even today the guide and friend's list is very similar to the online menu used in Halo 2.

With Halo 3, Bungie took things to another level. Yeah the gameplay was similar to Halo 2(and why should it change? It was incredibly fun) but the features they added made the game even that more time consuming. 4 player online co-op, Theater mode, and Forge mode were all things never done in a console game before. All of those features were simple and easy to use. They also added things like File Share which allowed you to swap gametypes, maps, screenshots, and videos with your friends. I don't even know how much I used that, it was really cool.

Whether or not you like the gameplay in Reach, I think everyone can agree it is the most complete and refined game of the series. They took everything from the previous games, including Firefight mode from ODST, and brought it up a notch. The customization is incredible compared to every other console game.

With all that said, Bungie has brought a lot of new things to the table over the past 10 years. You might think Halo is too dudebro, or you don't like shooters. But Bungie has definitely been an innovator and helped push gaming forward. I cannot wait to see their next game because I know it's going to wow me whenever I get my first glimpse of it. I'd like to hear other's thoughts on this subject.

Nope.

They followed a tried-and-true route for gameplay and became popular due to Microsoft's advertising, then used their fame to ruin the console online scene.

No, I don't think they do. The jury is out till I see their next game. I think you need to take a step back as well, but that's just my opinion.

They make incredible games, I'm not sure I agree that they don't get enough recognition though. Everyone knows Bungie is great... right?

Yes, but I think they deserve more praise for the Marathon series than Halo. The Myth games were also quite excellent.

I don't hear a lot of talk of Bungie when you hear "the big devs" like valve and blizzard, and I agree. Halo was one of the main reasons I bought an xbox, and Halo 2 was THE reason I signed up for live.

They have an immense amount of talent but I believe they haven't been given enough credit because they've been trapped under Halo for so long by MS. Once they start releasing new games again they can be reassessed.

After teaming up with Activision (of all people).

I'm not quite sure they do anymore..

They've made it clear that they have signed with Activision as a publisher only, not given them control of the studio.

They have been shown a lot of credit.

I still think Killzone 2 is the best console FPS.
I lol'd...wow

I think Bungie does get credit but I guess we'll all find out when they unveil their new game. I feel like it will make or break them.

I think compared to companies mentioned above, Bungie didn't create enough titles/IP IMO.

I do think the Halo games are great though.

I absolutely loved Halo 2 and 1, best games ever. Halo 3 was really good to and played it a ton but Halo Reach was absolutely horrible. It's a game I want to have removed from gaming history.

I think they'll get more respect when we see what they can do outside of the Halo franchise. It's hard to hold them in the highest regard when they're really only known for one success story (Oni and Marathon barely register with most people). I think what they do is absolutely world class and genre-defining, and if their Activision project reflects that same Bungie we know, then they'll likely receive more universal praise for their AAA products and general contributions to gaming.

Fair enough. Still kinda bitter about it though =/

Yes

Console FPS controls
Matchmaking
Community stat tracking
Enemy AI

Good list. But I would also say that their next game will go a long way towards securing a legacy. With the amount of time it's taking I'm hoping it's something special. And really hoping it will be on pc.

Not like Blizzard, Valve, and some other devs.

What credit are you looking for? Bungie is looked to as the developer who revolutionized shooters to work within the constraints of a console. They are one of the most recognizable and notable studios in this industry. They get top tier recognition.

Haven't released a remarkable product in more than half a decade, absolutely atrocious post-launch support for its supporters. CE being a landmark was more of a happy accident than anything else. From what they've said, Halo 2 MP was a bit of an accident too but it was amazing so I won't hold it against them. Have yet to be impressed with the scope or quality of their work this generation.

Bungie has been making the exact same game for 10 years, so no I don't think they are particularly noteworthy, no more then say Tiburon.

Surprised at some of the hate for Halo Reach. I'm not a crazy Halo nut or anything, but I still played the shit out of Reach multiplayer and thought the campaign was tons of fun co-op.

I was actually thinking about bungie the other day. what the heck are they up to at the moment?

I hope their next game is a return to form. Halo 3 was their last above average game imo

Child, please. Bungie is not in the same class as Blizzard or Valve. When they get to their 3-4 successful IPs, then we can talk.

I think Bungie certainly deserves the credit. Whether or not you like the halo universe, they have continuously delivered on tight and responsive quality gameplay in my opinion. I also agree that another hugely successful IP will secure their legacy.

I'm certainly pumped to see what they are capable of when they aren't stuck in Microsoft's desperate rut. Now they don't have to make the same game over and over again and I'm excited to see what that means for them. Their next project could be amazing and then people will start giving them the credit they deserve. Or it will bomb and they will be known as one-hit wonders, but that's an outcome I heavily doubt. They know what they are doing.

Agreed, up there with Resistance 1.

Bungie has been making the same game for a long time, I'll give them credit with they make more games.

SP wise, I honestly think they get way too much credit. Their halo games do have awesome A.i. though

I love the MP portion of their halo though.

every halo sequel was a step back from the last in terms of gameplay

the systems outside of the game (matchmaking, replays, screenshots, filesharing) were great, but it didn't really matter since the games weren't good

The main reason Bungie broke free is to show people they are more than Halo. This has been their life since the Xbox. No offense intended to Bungie employees but at the moment they are not Valve tier if we are going that comparison route. Since Halo came out on the Xbox in 2001:

Bungie has released a bunch of Halo products

Valve has:

Released Half Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal series, Left 4 Dead series, Dota 2 nearly here and also transformed Steam into a true game changer that is having some rippling effects on how consoles do business next generation.

It's really not even close. Don't take this post as a huge negative though because I love Bungie and did before Halo came out. Can't wait for their new game!

How can you even compare Bungie to Valve and Blizzard?

Just because Britney Spears sold butloads of records, will you compare her to pop legends like MJ?

Bungie hit a gold mine with the Halo franchise. It filled a very big void in the console market at that time. I would give a lot more credit to MS for figuring they NEEDED to lock halo on the xbox (with the initial exclusivity deal and posterior sequels) and the fantastic PR they maintained throughout the saga!

That said, I've played all the halos and even with all the promos for XBL gold I've never considered playing Halo online since I always played FPS on the PC. I also dislike pop music and dislike even more the kind that come from people like Britney Spears, but that doesn't mean I can't compare her with the other best selling names.

I think you've spent too much time over at HaloGAF
:p
, Bungie may not be a household name but I think the industry respects them quite a bit, if only by quietly adopting their practices and innovations.

Bungie may be slagged with merely catching lightning in a bottle, but their culture and attention to production value beyond graphics makes them worth alot more in my books.
