looking forward to the next Nintendo Power, should be the first time we see actual WiiU screenshots
It hurts me to say this, because you have such an awesome avatar, but you're way off on ACR.
It has one really lackluster gameplay mechanic (den defense), which is entirely avoidable. Other than that, the climbing and combat mechanics are improved and expanded upon, the storytelling is the best in the series aside from maybe AC2, and if you give a shit at all about Ezio or Altair, then it's worth playing just to see their stories ended so beautifully.

Isn't it Nintendo Gamer (UK mag)?
Minor spoilers for Revelations
If anything though, its a bunch of back story for Desmond & Altair and the ending of Altair & Ezio's story. Aand even then they cocked up the Ezio part by making the true ending a CG short you had to BUY (WTF!) instead of making it something in-game and even playable (I would've wanted to see something like RDR's ending with Marsden spending time with his family).
It doesn't move Desmond's story forward nor the whole 2012 disaster story forward at all.
What if they used in-engine assets to make the trailer and spiced it up afterwards like they do with the Uncharted cinematics?
Don't know how to explain it but the trailer's look felt different from the other AC-trailers.
I don't consider the CG ending a part of Ezio's story, I consider it a part of Desmond's. Ezio didn't see it. His ending was witnessing the life of a dedicated assassin and coming to grips with the fact that, no, he didn't want it. He would rather give up the fight for truth and freedom and enjoy his final years with somebody he loved than continue the fight the way Altair did. It was one, final, beautiful demonstration of dichotemy between the two leads of the franchise.
The whole theme of the game was personal growth, whether it was Altair's decision to return to Masayaf, fix the assassin's order, and write the wrong of his family's death. Or Ezio moving beyond personal revenge as his only motivation for being an assassin, and trying to determine whether or not he should continue as the leader of the assassins. Or Desmond's backstory, which told us of an immature kid running from his roots. struggling to find a purpose in the big city, and finally coming to grips with what he is, and what his purpose is. It's three parallel character arcs, each showing how a person CAN react to the hard life of an assassin.
Now, as for the CG ending, yes, I agree I would have liked it to be a playable section, even if it were something as simple as a phantom Desmond walking through the scene as buildings collapsed, crowds ran, etc. And yes, some kind of RDR style ending with Ezio passing on the Assassin leadership to somebody else would have been cool.
But for all those in this and other threads expressing confusion over elements of the story, like why Desmond's role in the future is an important part of the games, or what 'The Truth video' was really about, it's all there in the video where Jupiter explains that they created humans as slaves, a war started, then the event happened that destroyed the civilizations. Not more hints or vague innuendo. Desmond also came out of the coma with what looked like a glowing arm and the knowledge of where to go next, so there's some progression of the plot too.

Should I bother to play AC1? I've killed 3 guys so far, and it's starting to get boring, can I just go and read up on the story?
Someone in this thread probably has already mentioned this, but I went to Gamestop today to pick up Mass Effect 3 and they tried to upsell me on preordering this. They actually already had a limited supply of the steelbook already in stock, rating pending and all. The funny thing was, I heard the GS employee tell another customer that Patrice Désilets actually didn't really leave Ubisoft and was working on AC3 this whole time. That's not true right?
Just quit it. It doesn't get any better, the gameplay is basically those 3 assassination missions repeated until the game ends. AC1 really sucks.

Yikes the whole story sounds like someone trying way too hard to emulate something out of a Japanese shounen and doing a pretty bad job at it where it becomes a big convoluted mess. I'm glad I didn't keep on playing through AC2. The series wore out its welcome for me there.
Still, it's a pretty contrived plot device either way, whether it's aliens or not.Neither Altair nor Ezio repeat the phrase 'I'll never give up!' enough for this to be a Shounen.
As for the aliens, it's never said they're aliens. I just automatically think of aliens when I think of ancient races with technology far superior to our own. They may have evolved out of the primordial goo eons ago, and are simply ancient humans. Where they came from isn't really relevant.

Hahahaha. Makes sense to me.would doing a bad job of copying a jrpg storyline mean...a good storyline?
Wasn't sure where to ask this, but I've never played an Assassin's Creed game, and have been thinking about picking them up. Should I get them all or any to skip? And any necessary DLC?

If I were you I would follow UrbanRats' advice with the only exception being watching the important cutscenes/gameplay sequences on YouTube, preferably without some annoying 'Let's Play' narration. Best impact seeing it in person vs reading a text based summation.Wasn't sure where to ask this, but I've never played an Assassin's Creed game, and have been thinking about picking them up. Great read.Fantastic interview here: http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/893633-assassins-creed-iii-interview-fighting-the-revolution
I'm more excited if that's even possible after this interview.
I'd love to see someone wear that chain in real life just so I can point in their face and laugh.
