Kid Icarus Uprising |OT| On a Wing and a Prayer

That's why I think you are obsessed. I mean, who gives 2 flying f's about scores nowadays?

LOL, that was a joke. Jesus. I don't actually care.

Back before the reviews were coming out, I said 79, and have since been disingenuously "hoping" for lower reviews so my prediction would come true.

Fucking Poe's Law is killing me here. Apparently it's impossible to parody a guy (even very loosely) who is obsessed with reviews, without coming off as genuine.

There are a couple Special Powers you can equip pre-mission to get it - try to use either one of the Jump/Jump Glide powers and you can just launch yourself from the platform closest to the exit door/chest itself. If you go at it from the other side, the wall slides out and knocks you to the lower level again.

Ah, thanks. I wondered about the jump power, but given the extremely controlled nature of jumping with the jump pads in this game, I never bothered adding it to my active powers list because I assumed it was just a straight up/straight down type of deal, and didn't really see the purpose in using it.

chapter T_T the music... the mood... Chaper
18 - even though I spoiled myself reading ahead in this thread this little girl is so charming... not moving her for a while she bounces and kicks the dirt looks in the are... and the music...
okay going to find out what happens next walking down the path

There's also the suicidal way to get some chests. If it's upon you, let a monster hit you and you will jump high to get to the platform.

I really, really, really, really can't stand the land controls with the stylus.

Is it better with a CCP? I don't see myself playing this anymore with these controls.

I feel bad for those who lack the skill to play the game and see what it has to offer. On the other hand, I feel good for me because, apparently, I'm a super gamer since I can control this effortlessly.

People who complain about the controls remind me of the people who bash games like Ninja Gaiden or Dark Souls. They can't control the game, so they blame it instead.

Have you tried to use the circle pad to aim and ABXY to move? I prefer to play that way.

^The controls are weird. Don't bash people just because they have a hard time getting used to them. I think they work well after a while, but they are weird all the same, and I can see how some people would have trouble.

I wonder how this sold. Hopefully it does well.

It`s Monday, and I am still waiting for delivery which was shipped by a Royal Mail 1st class on Wednesday morning. Whoever responsible for this, great job!

I just want to randomly let all of you know my control scheme:

Movement: circle pad
aiming: touchscreen (with my BARE THUMB/THUMBNAIL, the 3DS had a much more sensitive screen than the DS, finally making this viable *although I also did this with the original ds*)
attack: mapped to the L trigger
special power scrolling: Y and A buttons (so I can dodge while scrolling)
special power usage: UP on the D-Pad (quick usage while dodging)
First Person View: double tap the touchscreen or the X button

This works out perfectly for me and cramps are nonexistent because I can hold the system normally :D.

You can configure it to use the Circle Pad, d-pad and face buttons alone. But really, if you just spend some time in training moving around, you'll learn the stylus controls much like you learned dual analog at one point in time. And unlike dual analog, which was a downgrade from PC keyboard and mouse, this is actually an upgrade in terms of speed and precision.

The key is to think of moving the camera like spinning a globe. Try topping out the vertical and horizontal reticule aiming speed, and topping out the reticule stopping speed. This way, quick effortless flicks of the screen will let you precisely line up your view. It quickly becomes second nature and doesn't require any extra thought. You just do it, and before you know it you're leaping sideways out of the way of incoming fire while precisely shooting down several enemies in a row. It's awesome. :)

Good luck!

They may be generally weird but that doesn't mean that they are broken or that they should automatically work for everyone based on the precedent of games they played in the past.

Same for me exactly, except I press R to use powers.

Where did I bash the game? I'm not bashing the game, as I like it a lot. Controls work great in the air. I, personally, don't like having to control the camera and aiming with the stylus. I don't like holding the system with one hand. It doesn't work well for me. It's very uncomfortable.

I have spent time in training mode. I just don't like the configs available to me. They aren't working out.

Likewise you shouldn't assume that people who are having trouble haven't put some time into the game. I didn't spend 30 bucks on this to not try it out.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Speaking of power-ups, I really wish the game paused when accessing the little menu selection. Too often I find the big reason I need to use an item is for super armor or healing. Just so absurd having to remove myself from the play experience via that awful d-pad or looking down at the screen to select an item from the minuscule menu, while I sit there as helpless as a training dummy. I'll try the Y+A buttons for selection mapping, but that doesn't sound ideal either.

I feel bad for those who lack the skill to play the game and see what it has to offer. On the other hand, I feel good for me because, apparently, I'm a super gamer because I can control this effortlessly.

Posters like this can fuck off. They are clearly naive to the whole argument being represented.

I do appreciate all the constructive advice by the more respectful posters though, I have tried so many schemes, but issues with item selection, and circle strafing effectively(keeping the enemy framed without constant awkward 'globe spinning' AND reacquiring target lock simultaneously) really enforce that this is merely a functional framework but far from ideal.

So in 3v3 balancing is done by tying your weapons strength to how much health your team loses on your death. Are things balanced similarly at all in deathmatch, or is there nothing to keep someone with all top-range gear from just dominating?

Any good thoughts on weapons? I have been sticking exclusively to my Violet Hand(value 220) as even replaying Stage 1 and 2 on Intensity 7.0 has given me guns and bows that are of similar power, but are far too slow for power shots and demand perfect accuracy to land hits. The Violet Hands have fantastic homing, but on later stages with higher intensity, they are too weak to take out the hordes effectively without multiple charges.

I hear claws are good, but the one pair I have tried are far too weak and also have poor homing. Just looking for a good helpful weapon as I still struggle to acclimate with the game beyond Intensity 4.0 for the mid-stages.

I don't completely disagree w/ what he's saying though. Going back to the days of (oh wait, I guess it's still raging on) moust+kb vs controllers, a lot of the arguments from the controller front seemed to be 'well you dont like it because YOU CANT HANDLE IT' or at least, that's how it sometimes felt like was being said (though I suppose that came from both ends). In this case the tables have been turned, and focused bitching has ensued. I'm probably not the only one thinking that kids that grew up on CoD deserve to be heckled a little here. It's not like most people won't get over it by the time they finish half the SP campaign.

I got high hopes that the odd control scheme won't adversely affect sales much, though. After all we have had megahits like MH, whose PSP control scheme is overcrowded at best, and downright painful-looking if you go as far as using the claw.

Black / Babel clubs? Former has excellent homing, latter has high damage and decent homing. Playstyle on the ground will be similar to what you might do w/ a rocket launcher in other FPS's. Survivability in the air is pretty good as well, since you can deflect enemy fire instead of dodging.

Lol, just did Chapter 3, intensity 6, less than 13 minutes (got the achivement), got also all treasures (I dont know if there was an horoscope chamber, but didnt seem that way) and yet I still have a green laurel.
205290 points in the stage.
Im pretty sure is the score what changes the color of the laurel.

This isn't quite comparable to M/KB though. You never have to move the reticle independently of the screen framing in a typical PC FPS. If you were forced to swipe the mouse to pan the viewpoint as well as aim, then maybe the comparison would be more apt. Even in that scenario, some would acclimate, but it would be far from ideal given the nature of the device.

I still can't beat the first chapter on 9.0. Tried the following chapters and got destroyed. 6.0 seems to be what I can handle as of now.

Chapter
18
is where shit starts getting real.
Oh my god, my heart was thumping... there's something that all of you guys want (but you don't realize it yet) and Sakurai makes it seem like it won't happen, but then it does.

I love this game. Whats the opposite word for bomba?
Goda?
That Chapter is what made me think Sakurai just became
Hideo Kojima
. No, I'm serious.

Even the serious tone of that level, and the revelation that Palutena had turned, ended with a brand new Menu screen courtesy of Viridi...
It proved to me Nintendo can make games with great storytelling too.

Of course it isn't the same as M+KB, I just restated it's the same old bickering, except w/ the kids growing up on dual analogs that are at the receiving end this time. As for the whole mouse swiping thing... yes that would be silly, but more because you wouldn't need to w/ the range of motion the mouse provides. Realistically torso and leg movements should be independent of each other, but aside from compromises like KI or slower-paced games like Mechwarrior 2 (separate torso/aiming/cockpit viewing controls all in one. And PPC cannons!) I can't see it working all that well.

Claws are awesome but they do take some skill because you have to be able to close in on your targets fast to get in your OP melee dash attack while dodging their fire. I have used multiple iterations of Tiger Claws (now with I think 3 to 3 1/2 stars on melee and range) for the last 7 chapters or so and I can do intensity 6 pretty regularly. The big drawback on them (for me) is that they really aren't so hot for air battles so I always seem to skate by those on higher intensities.

Have you tried blades? I found a good burst blade in the 250 range that was pretty efficient. Great charge shots I think. They don't seem to have any weaknesses so as long as you can keep from getting hit too much they could be pretty good for you.

I'm beginning to think that if you master a staff you will be an ever valuable tool for reaping in teams. Anyone have any success in multi with it? The no aim assist is really apparent.

Thankfully I got the CPP by the door today as Amazon is pretty impressive with their fast shipping. So now I dont have to play the game with the face buttons. I only had to pay 17 pounds! if I didn't get it from Amazon Europe I would have to pay 30 pounds.

Edit:

Okay I just noticed that google document so I will add people from there...

Hey guys! If anyone's curious, I just made a review of KI:U. Sure you guys have it already, but maybe you'll like it.

Hey man, cool review, especially with the details about the content. However I would say that when you give it a final score, and you break down the respective segments of the game and rate them individually, isn't the total score supposed to be an average? I can totally see where you're coming from with the score you gave it, just seemed a little weird after giving it very high marks for certain things.

I've been pretty busy lately so I haven't had time to join the fun in this thread but I just want to say that this game is really fantastic. I'm currently on
Chapter 13
and I've enjoyed every moment so far. Put a pillow in your lap with the stand on top and you're good to go for hours at a time.

Thanks! I actually used to do the average of them, but sometimes games don't equal the sum of their parts, like this one. :)

I...kinda disagree with the assesment that Uprising would've been better with a darker tone.
While there's no denying this game does have darker tones, they are handled perfectly well.
In fact, it kinda reminds me of 90's anime: lighthearted at first
then the series somehow changes in tone midway
. Forthwall breaking is not thes games fault; it is its asset. And this is especially true with all the other games taking themselves waaaay too seriously. It does not make it any less...well, epic.

And Achievements...They're not exactly ripping off from 360 but actually taking what Sakurai implemented in Kirby Air Ride, a GameCube game. The grid system is pretty much Air Ride right down to having
three of them
. Brawl implements this and I'm thinking all future Sakurai games as well.

I hear you. The big reason dual stick format has worked successfully is also on account of a high degree of assists and tuning that goes into that functionality. Decades of development has derived a comfort level that has been achieved to give that argument credence. The argument seems to really just comes down to preference because really, it's a stupid debate in this era. I've finished Crysis on Delta with a controller on PC, but I wouldn't argue it was the absolute method of play, but it worked fine for me.

Kid Icarus' setup is relatively new and some will acclimate faster than others. This system is also operating with various assists(much to rectify the 3DS hardware constraints), but the setup is still not ideal. I am having little trouble engaging the levels and completing them for the last half-dozen hours, but the little quirks are constantly at ends with my expected competence. Again, circle-strafing and item selection is a hurdle that speaks more to the hardware fault than the game, but they are issues that persist as barriers taking me completely out of the experience. The lack of real estate on the touch-pad mixed with the single L-trigger as the sole button creates a problem.

I still think its a fantastic game, but in search of a different platform.

It's just my opinion :) I didn't dock off points or anything. I just thought they shouldn't have made it EXTREMELY obvious that the dialogue's trying too hard.

I've added everyone on the Google Doc in the OP to my 3DS and put my name on there too.
