Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

Another nice story HylianTom thanks, my store got rid of that 'games' section too, why do good things have to end so often/fast :(

So outside of us talking about PC just now this is wildly OT, and you'll have to excuse me, but since I now have a Defense Grid (and the Resurgence DLC) Steam key I don't need, it seemed logical to make it available here.
So quote to see fine perusers of this thread!

Someone here called Other M a diamond-filled turd a while ago. Those who didn't like the game focused too much on the turd. I had no problem looking past that and fishing out the diamonds.

Also I don't know why people so afraid of the turd can't seem to fathom that Nintendo could completely wash away the turd with a sequel. They're not stupid; they know what people didn't like about the first attempt.

I've said turd so many times now that the word seems weird to me now.

Yes, I'll agree. Other M was not a bad game if you looked at it for it's strengths. The same engine could even be used again.

Just three things:

1. Put it on a 3DS
2. Keep the story simple and dialog free. Lose the Other M name or connection
3. Get rid of scavenger hunt

I fully blame Yakamoto for all of Other M's problems. I almost feel bad that the story, pacing, and scenarios ruined an otherwise fun combat system and interesting controls.

I doubt it. If anything, they should do everything they can to try and "mend" the bad taste that Other M left in some fan's mouths.

Nah man, Metroid Prime 2 and 3 didn't even sell that great either regardless of quality. I think Nintendo isn't too pleased with the Metroid series right now.

The last time Metroid did well in sales was Metroid Prime 1.

The environment/camera style would definitely lend itself well to the 3D.

Wait, did I say that the wrong way?

The 3D would lend itself well to the environment/camera style...?

how do englush

And it's a damn shame. Atleast re-release prime 1-3 in HD. If there is any franchise that would benefit from an HD upgrade it's Metroid Prime.

Didn't Fusion and Zero Mission do pretty well?

They do pump Metroid still with their press releases and virtual console. Moreso than other Nintendo franchises.

Regardless, that isn't Nintendo's sole and only concern, you do realize that. They make plenty of games that don't light up the charts.

Wondering if the topic will have moved on by the time I hit post...

Having not played much Metroid before, and not playing the Prime series due to not getting on with FPS/A gaming, I honestly only had three major issues with Other M:

1) The "pixel-hunt" sections, which were ridiculous.
2) The sudden difficulty spike when you hit the "fire" section for the first time and the boss before that.
3) The stupid reason why you couldn't use all of your weapons and abilities. Couldn't Nintendo have thought of a much better reason, like Samus' abilities not working right? I know it's cliché, but when I entered the fire section and was not allowed to use my perfectly harmless, yet vital, Varia (I think?) suit, it seemed really silly.

I actually didn't mind the 3rd to 1st person transition so much (strangely enough) and I LOVED exploring the environments; seriously my favourite thing about the game. Any morph-ball action is super fun.

Other M gave me Metroid fatigue, but I think there are a lot of exciting possibilities for the franchise on Wii U. If they took M:OM's bones and improved on the awful stuff, they'd have a gem.

having to find the smallest part of the guy while fighting all those bugs and you couldn't move. Horrible.

Part of me wonders: could Nintendo be looking at Icarus' sales, wondering if Icarus could eventually supplant Metroid as one of the Nintendo's top-shelf holy trinity?

Which is why I hope Metroid recovers. And soon.
(Although a holy tetrology doesn't sound too shabby.)

Pixel hunt is specifically the gameplay element I'd like them to tweak. Wasn't there a rumor that visor mode was originally intended to be a lot more robust but they ran out of time, and it caused them to whittle it down to the awful result we got.

The obvious Wii U feature would be to hold the DRC up at the TV screen to enter Samus's visor mode to scan and play detective.

I expect Nintendo to move their focus away from Metroid and more towards Kid Icarus. I could even see less focus on Kirby and more attention toward Donkey Kong Country.

Prestige games are all well and good, but the brand has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of ability to sell hardware or create new customers. I'm not saying they shouldn't make the game, but I think there are probably more productive use of finite resources in the crucial pre-launch/launch development period.

Metroid Other M
Global Total as of 24th Mar 2012 (units): 1.07m

To be honest I was surprised when Other M reached the 1 million mark after all the shit it got
My only complaint about the games was the story... chessy as fuck...but again, Other M introduced me to the Metroid world so I wasn't like "Oh Shit! Samus can speak, now the franchise is shit" :p

edit: ffs... my english is flawless today -_-

Donkey Kong for sure. DKCR was a global blockbuster, and there's no way that franchise doesn't find a permanent spot in the rotation. Some GAFers were speculating that NST's resurrection is related to moving DK from Retro to NST.

As for Kid Icarus, the jury is still out on how it sells, but I hope Nintendo considers it a viable franchise. Although Sakurai's schedule is pretty full these days.

Ouch. This is one of those times where I hope Nintendo goes on another hiring spree so that its "children" don't have to fight for attention..

According to Chartz. Besides that though, the game was selling at heavily discounted prices fairly shortly after launch so the sales don't really matter.

Say, are there any people who work in the medical field in this thread? I'm just wondering what kind of (medical) machines/gadgets the Woopad could replicate. Besides the obvious ones like X-ray generators, CTs and PETs, what else is there?

Count me in with the crew that thinks Metroid is taking a back seat for a while. I think (hope) Nintendo is working on different things that will perhaps sell more systems than Metroid.

Also, I haven't said anything about the (most likely true) rumors of Wii U being at or below 360 level, but I will say I'm pretty disappointed. I was fine with it for Wii until I saw 3rd party's abysmal support. So I predict one of two things to happen: 1) The same exact Wii scenario where most good 3rd party games go to the other 2 "real" next-gen consoles or 2) the scenario Nintendo was probably hoping for with Wii (and got with DS) where the cheaper development will create a gaming paradise because the other systems are -truly- too expensive to develop for save for only the largest of third parties supporting them (and hopefully giving the smaller guys a second chance with a Wii U oasis/savior platform). Let's hope Nintendo's first party line up and third party collaborations will create a great userbase that buys and continues to buy quality games instead of the fad/shovelware games the Wii U will almost certainly receive.

It was sold out at my local Wal-Mart, EB, and Best Buy. I guess it depends on shipment, but I think the franchise will easily hit a million units. It's set to hit 250k in Japan too.

Curious... what makes them "most likely true"?

I'd prefer it if they waited a generation or two before attempting another Metroid game. They should use the extra time learning the hardware to really get it 'right'. Plus it's already an established franchise, so it doesn't need an early introduction on the platform like a new IP would.

I'm certified in CT and MRI. Been in the field for 7 years now, although my CT days are behind me now, probably for good. I'm all MRI now, mostly doing neuro work.. although I do cover ortho work during Saints games. Any seriously injured players come to me (*insert scandal joke here-*)

I know it's obvious, but I'd love to see it used as an xray visor for Samus; it was one of the first thoughts that came to my mind when I saw the device.

I'd also like to see it used in another Trauma Center game as a fluoroscope. You could use it to angle the camera so that when you're nailing bones back together, you can be sure that the screw and plate sizes you're using are appropriate, the angle of the plate aligns properly with the fracture, the screws go in at just the right angle to the proper depth, etc etc. I've long thought that a realistic surgery game would be awesome.

Yup, it's my GOTY so far. Already sunk close to 30 hours into it which is unprecedented by my standards.

I'd love to see another Kid Icarus for WiiU, although I've been leaning on the idea of an open world structure or something different than the flight-ground-boss setup. It'd like a big, explorable world, with a little more focus on flight/platforming.

Hell, I'd take another one for 3DS. Throw in more levels, new story, some co-op, some *cough* dual analog support. I'm game.

Ace, I believe it will be around there. I think enough sources have come forth to say its either at, below, or slightly better to tell me that it's not a large leap over the offering gen offerings. And with the Durango/Orbis rumors, I see Nintendo getting locked out again if development indeed goes toward being even higher budget.

Unless, of course, I'm interpreting the Orbis/Durango rumors incorrectly.

But I still think that if you're hoping for anything other than an "enhanced PS3 "or something, you're going to be disappointed. I think that might even be setting the bar too high. And yes, I'm aware of the conflicting rumors.

Bingo. That's what I'm looking for. No idea if the procedures in the Trauma games were realistic, but I'd love nothing more than to see Atlus go buck wild with this thing.

Wat? You're assuming these rumors to be true ... I say just chill and let the console speak for it's self.

At the end of the day those are still anonymous bits of info that don't line up with cited info or even what gaffers here that are in the know are saying.

As for KI, I hope they move that to Wii U. I haven't played it myself but from vids I see it seems like the game could really use another stick for the cam.

It, however, it certainly not be below or even at par.

Those weren't very realistic, but still fun. They were cartoony surgeries, essentially.

If a developer had the mind to do it, a really serious surgery simulation game could be made with this controller and the Wii Remote. One person could be the surgeon/nurse with the hand tools - controlled via Wii Remote. Meanwhile, another person could be the fluoroscope technologist, rotating the camera in space to give real-time views. Plating bones back together, removing diabetic extremities, implanting artificial hips, putting screws into a patient's lumbar area for a fusion.. it'd be fantastic.

The training surgery could be just like in real life: take out someone's gall bladder, and be sure to get radiographic evidence of a patent biliary duct before sewing the patient back up.

Man, the possibilities..

I've only completed a handful of games since 2006. Other M was one of them and I loved every minute of it. I avoided the "controversy" before playing the game. I miss life before the internet.

Heh, you should work as a consultant for the Trauma games. :D

I thought Other M was decent, don't remember much of it, made me appreciate the Prime games more though.

That last battle is one of the worst conclusions in the history of gaming.

*shakes head*
You are missing the point of the control scheme.

Sure, make it dual analog for a sequel (to appeal to the masses), but they would have to slow down the action or come up with some way to auto-lock or quick-turn or something.
