This was pretty awesome. Visually impeccable, really spectacular. The constant nudity threw me for a loop a bit. :p Will definitely keep watching.

So is this is a prequel huh. I feel like watching some classic Green Jacket eps now.

. I hope they don't go overboard with it. But this is differently off to a great start.

I must be one of the few people that didn't like Castle of Cagliostro. It's been a while since I last saw it but, it wasn't very lupin for my taste.

That was fucking awesome. Very good-looking, and I enjoyed the Lupin/Fujiko interaction a lot.

Zenigata looked swag as all hell.

Probably because most people associate Lupin with the Miyazaki Castle of Cagliostro movie,:p which is fairly light-hearted and family-friendly compared to other incarnations in the franchise.

Watched it. Was boss.

Enjoyed it much more than I'm enjoying my run through Red Jacket. Which is weird, because Red Jacket was my introduction to the series on adult swim way back then and I loved it. Now I don't. Granted, I'm only four episodes in, with 151 left. I dunno if I'll bother to finish... And I checked out Pink out of curiosity. The art was not good. Dunno if it's as goofy as Red, though. If it isn't, I might just... watch that instead, even though I don't like the art?

Based on his review of the first episode of this new series, it seems like maybe he likes the goofy Lupin. That's exactly what I'm disliking about Red. Maybe I'll change my mind, though.

EDIT: Just read that review and I guess it sounds interesting enough that I'll give it a chance.

I wouldn't call it goofy, I think loose & cartoony is a better description.

Koikelupin ep 1

Dat style, nice rough 70s look similar to the old show but with kokie’s usually flair and beauty, fluidly animated characters (nice body language).
Plot is similar to that of 70s lupin, having that 70s spy flick setting.

-a few shots with straight crayon shade look off with it not bending around the characters
-a bit too much classy sexy even if it is koiketitty

It's been a while, but it seems like he was like that in the manga. Lupin drives him to insanity through years and years of making him seem like a bumbling idiot (ruining his reputation in the process).

It doesn't seem like Lupin and Zenigata really know each other yet, so it will be interesting to see him go from stoic guy to raving lunatic.

That's my guess as well. He doesn't take Lupin too seriously yet, just casually having a smoke and appreciative of the main baddie to turn himself in on time. I do love his dialogue, though—lots of "insects" mentioned throughout the episode, mainly by the priest and by Zenigata.

Takashi is probably trying to replicate both the Monkey Punch manga with his shadow filters, and the original GJ series with the whole incomplete, sketchy look. Very well done.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I'm drowning in style! Too much style in fact. I found the pencil shavings completely at odds with the normal style to the point where it was disorienting and hurt my eyes. The
Lupin/Fujiko shoot-out scene
in particular was making me dizzy. Think I'd be more likely to get eye problems from this than flashing lights.

Other than that, it was alright I guess. I love Lupin's personality, but there's really nothing compelling about the plot for me and I never really liked the premise in the first place. I mean this is by far the least boring entry in the franchise I have seen, but I'm still not so sure what to think. I also really don't like Lupin's voice.

So yeah, I don't know if I'll really keep up with this one. If this anime season wasn't so stacked, I probably would, but it just might not be for me. Doesn't help that it's supposedly episodic, something I have an aversion to.

One nice thing about having decades of cultural significance is that there's no need for time wasted on introductions--you have Lupin, you have Fujiko, and there's a heist to be made; the episode is then devoted to these hijinks, where the extraordinary presentation and swift pacing carries the narrative forward. The focus on Fujiko and her infiltration is a nice contrast to the more slapstick approach that Emunoz takes, and Miyuki Sawashiro sounds sexy as fuck as Fujiko, no? The detail is astounding and the whole thing is just some 10/10 shit.

I'm all in on this. Spring 2012 is fucking awesome.

Some very classy nudity so far.
Crazy first episode. I'm a Lupin noob outside of Cagliostro so I still barely know what to expect.

There's only one specific effect that was throwing me off, although it happened maybe twice. The hard cutoff for the pencil-y shadows looks really weird to me, especially when most of the time they do a proper fade off to them.

I disagree. I think the pencil-line technique was executed well, even in that scene (which lasted a couple seconds). I don't see the fade you are talking about.

That looks intentional to me. It's a different way of showing hard light and soft light.The technique is confusing while watching, so it proves that it wasn't executed perfectly, but I think it still looks nice.

It looks completely unnatural and also obscures most of the art. Not a fan of it at all, myself. I didn't mind most of the shading but that pic I posted was just way overboard. The sheer geometry of it just looks so artificial, along with the way it kinda just shits on the frame, looks like someone just scraped over it with charcoal.

I kinda get that they wanted to show the solid shading from the sunset but it just wasn't executed well at all.

That's fine in theory, and obviously it looks great in a vacuum, but they're practically back to back shots in the second instance under literally the same lighting conditions so the logic doesn't quite hold up. It's just a jarring effect, especially because it already happens so little.

As I said in the Anime thread the effect could be a budget saving effect. So expect to see more of it in the later episodes lololol!

Maybe the reason the effect is so unpopular is because it distracts the viewer from the face. The straight, vertical line made by the shading ignores the facial form, which is a large focal point (especially in anime). Basically the viewer's brain is trying to grasp the "3d" of the face, and the effect sort of ruins it. Maybe it would be more popular if it was removed from the face or made more vertical, or something.


I also can understand if the viewer wasn't ready for the transition to the scene. It looks good in that screencap, and I liked the effect in the episode... but I agree the episode did jump around a little in animation flow...

I definitely can't crop the image and use it as an avatar.
