They should just allow people to play the game how they want.

You can make that argument about anything though: "All games should just let you turn off life bars and have infinite ammo if that's what people want."

The problem is that there are things that people THINK they want but actually decrease their enjoyment of the game. Although it may not seem that way, this is one of those situation.

There are many, many games if you just want to voice chat with friends while mindlessly killing lots of dudes. Dark Souls is a more concentrated, solitary experience. It's not bullshit, it's part of the game's identity and what makes it unique.

I think the bosses in Demons Souls were all to easy, as was the whole game except for a few standout areas.

Every time I read someone say something like this I just can't help but to think they are just trying to stealth brag about how much of a gaming badass they are.

There is nothing "easy" about the Souls games, and they are all the better because of it.

I just had a talk with Mr. and Mrs. Badframerate from the PS3 and 360 versions. I can tell that they scared now. Those motherfuckers know what's up with Dark Souls PC.

I'm seriously annoyed by the pendant. Has Miyazaki said/hinted at anything about what it does (or what it was supposed to do?) Can we start a petition to give us a hint about what it does for god's sake?

All you do is trade it to Snuggly for some shit you can get elsewhere, and you can also get the pendant itself elsewhere.

If you don't pick Master Key (or Thief class) you're a total sucker, and it's been that way since release date. :>

or people should just play a different game if this isn't the game they want to play

But this is the game they want to play and they want to share that experience with friends. And not just segments of the experience with constant disconnections. A full co-op option would have been very nice to have.

Not if it undermines the core aspects of the game.

Being what? That the game should be a struggle of a single person? My argument would be that players can already play with their friends for a majority of the game, but they have to go through so many hoops to get it to work. I played with a friend on PS3, while we were both connected to XBox Live so we could voice chat. Allowing co-op would not diminish your enjoyment of the game.

but that is the game. it's like that on purpose. it's a huge part of the experience and atmosphere

if they want to play another game, then play another game

i'm sure some people wanted to play bionic commando with jumping
or maybe journey with voice chat
or resident evil without ink ribbons and with tons of extra ammo

I feel like it's just an another idea that didn't have time to be implemented properly. Would be nice if they would like to fix that up and spice the covenants a little bit too, but maybe they should save those kinda things for the sequel/next game instead.

What other game are they going to play that has the type of combat this game presents? This community always raves that there is no game like this not just in terms of atmosphere, but in terms of the gameplay mechanics. So no, can't really play another game like this with friends.

Also, the examples you listed are silly. The game already has co-op, all I'd suggest would be loosening the rules a little to make it easier to play with friends. Hell, people on PC are just going to use Mumble to voice chat.

It should be obvious by how they changed the online sign system between Demon's Souls and Dark Souls that From Software does not want friends to play together. You can exploit it so you can play together but the idea is to have online that:

1. Keeps the core feeling of solidarity and danger (atmosphere, basically) (which voice chat does away with)
2. Does not vary in quality based on who has a mic (which voice chat does away with)
3. Causes no spoilers and people telling you how to figure things out for you (which voice chat does away with)

It's a game that uses online elements to add to what is supposed to be a solely singleplayer experience.

I'm still holding out hope that we will get to coop with the console versions one day. I understand why From does it, but I would absolutely love to play these games with a friend.

I'll solve all three of these issues for you:
Disable voice chat unless the person is on your friends list.

Dark Souls PC may not be restricted to Games for Windows Live

"We are aware of the petition against Games for Windows Live, but that's a more publishing side of the question, so I will pass your questions to publishing producer from Namco Bandai, For Games for Windows Live, that's the established server we used for our 360 version for the console - that is the main reason that we've picked the Xbox Live server, The partnership is still ongoing, so we might have another announcement regarding publishing,"

"Just to keep you updated, we (the whole European team) have been feverishly gathering all your thoughts and comments and will be approaching the development teams etc with this ASAP and we will move on from there," UK community manager Hollie Bennett wrote on the Namco Bandai UK forum. "Don't worry your voices have not been forgotten."

The article reads more like it will available on other digital sores but doesn't really mention steamworks implementation. I think the chances for that are nil.

Interesting, so they know people don't want GFWL..that a good start.

lame reason, just drop GFWL already.

and more people need to sign the petition ( it's not even 20k yet )
http://www.change.org/petitions/nam...ls-pc-edition-without-games-for-windows-live#

we can do this.

edit
For gamers wondering why the developers have gone with Games for Windows Live over Steamworks for online connectivity, it turns out that Namco Bandai requested this of From Software. A Namco Bandai representative points to an already established server used in the Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls as one of the reasons for going with GFWL, but says that final specs and distribution details have yet to be determined. Stay tuned -- things could change.

Story:

Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition is a port of the console version, but will feature some additional content for fans. Miyazaki says that we can expect approximately 3 new areas and 4 new bosses, though these numbers might change. There will be a few new stories and more NPCs to go with them, and some new equipment will be available through these.

The additional story content is based on the dark knight named Artorias. This name will familiar to players of Dark Souls, but this will be the first time they'll see the knight.

Cool...

Specifications and Graphics:

Bad news for those hoping to see a high-resolution Dark Souls with this PC port: Miyazaki says that there will be no difference in visual quality between the PC and PS3 version.

As far as minimum PC specifications go, Miyazaki asks that we wait for the official announcement later this year.

WTF is this shit?

Connectivity/Online:

For gamers wondering why the developers have gone with Games for Windows Live over Steamworks for online connectivity, it turns out that Namco Bandai requested this of From Software. A Namco Bandai representative points to an already established server used in the Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls as one of the reasons for going with GFWL, but says that final specs and distribution details have yet to be determined. Stay tuned -- things could change.

Additions and Modifications:

To provide fans with a new experience, Miyazaki says that From Software is planning on adding a PVP stage to the PC version of Dark Souls. He says that this is "not going to be a huge stage," and that it should be taken as a bonus.

As for Mods, as it stands now there are no plans for modification support for Dark Souls on PC.

WTF? No difference from the PS3 version? You know what? This is not acceptable Bamco/FROM. GFWL and no visual difference? I'll save my money.

So a console port with higher resolution, stable framerate, and some new content. Seems like a missed opportunity but oh well. Curious what this PVP stage is about.

Its just a testing ground for how receptive PC gamers are to the Dark Souls universe. If it does well, then they will make sure Dark Souls 2 is made at the same time as the Console version.

The same as pretty much every other PC port, and the same thing people expected?

When developers say something like this they mean no difference in assets. Writing "bad news for those hoping to see a high-resolution Dark Souls" based on that is just awful journalism.

If the game won't run at 1080p I'll eat my hat.

I guess we'll see. It's dropped down from "day one" to "steam sale" for me now though.

I bet that we'll have supersampled 1080p shots of ridiculous quality of this game in the PC screenshot thread on release day.

I agree.

Bad Bosses:
Bed of Chaos
Armor Spider
Dirty Colossus
Pinwheel
Demon Firesage
Adjudicator
Storm King (The Stormruler was cool and all but the fight was terribly easy and all show)

I'm leaving out the Dragon god purely because while he's terribly underwhelming it does make a tense stealth situation.
Battles like the Capra Demon, and Moonlight Butterfly weren't too hard (unless you have a history with the Capra Demon) but they were all fairly unique situations.

The best bossfights in Demon's Souls were False King Allant, Maneaters, and hopefully the Old Monk (though just the idea of the Old Monk boss was awesome). Battles like the Tower Knight, Fool's Idol, and Penetrator were fairly generic compared to the colorful bunch in Dark Souls.

Pinwheel is an awesome boss if you go down into the Catacombs early enough. If you fight him around level 20, it's a great fight, and it's kind of tough. Unfortunately it's a fucking pain get out of that area once you fight him, and there's nothing for you to do in TotG at that point, so no one ever does it unless they are trying to get one of the masks really early.

does anyone do that?

framerate/resolution lock?

framerate lock yes many developers do it on PC even for racing games sometimes, resolutions no(but not all of devs uses higher quality assets/textures for the PC versions of their games)

Do you guys really doubt the PC modding community's ability to bypass frame and resolution locks?

I can't think of one game that I couldn't unlock to 60fps.

If they lock the fps to 30 it won't be because they don't know how to unlock it or because they think it's more cinematic or whatever but because the game speed or physics are tied to the framerate. It might be possible for modders to unlock the framerate but then the game will run at 2x speed (4x if you play at 120 fps).

Look anxious dudes, straight from the designers mouth:
EGM: Then I also have to ask, if you’re saying this is a complete port—I don’t know if I’d call it a “feature”, or simply a part of the game, but in Blighttown the framerate can get a little rough at times. Can you say anything on a technical level on how the PC version of Dark Souls will run framerate-wise in sections like that?

Miyazaki: Unfortunately, at this moment, I don’t know the answer to that. [laughs]

EGM: But, of course, you know that that’s something players are eager to know about, and potentially see from a PC version.

Miyazaki: I’m fully aware that players want such a fix not only from the PC version, but also the console versions. [laughs] I’m very sorry about that.

I see this as a cautiously optimistic sign. There is no talk at all about needing to lick or match console performance. He is just avoiding making promises.

this game needs to have some PC enhancements for me to bite on day 1.

a framecap is completely unacceptable to me. if its capped @ 30fps, forgetaboutit.

If you're going from console to PC, the answer to "will the framerate be better?" should not be "I don't know, maybe!" That's ridiculous.

capped framerate just means an extra fuckin lazy ass console port, imo.

example: Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon on PC is capped @ 30fps by default. the game looked horrible.

then some kind person fixed the .exe to allow for 60fps ...the game looked great. it didn't screw up the game speed or physics at all.

Hmm, this is interesting:

The pic is called ps3_frpg_120330_005433_HQSS. This could mean two things
- new content already running on consoles, so they'd probably get the edition as well at some point
- the footage we've seen so far might not have been from the PC version

im sure there will be a way to adjust the resolution (is that even something they can lock?)
but really, is a locked 30fps that big of a deal? jesus christ. if you're computer has the horse power it should run at a steady 30fps the entire time
i dont know what you guys expected out of this. the fact that it took an online petition to get this to come out obviously means its being done on a shoestring budget

I expect to play it at 1920*1080 with driver forced AA, pristine image quality, and at least 60 (better 120) FPS. And I'm certain that will happen.

i'd take a 800x600 only version of PC Dark Souls without GFWL over 1290x1080 with GFWL any day.
I'm happy you're not From Software!
