Dark Souls PC trailer [Matchmaking, new bosses, enemies, NPCs, weapons, armor, areas]

Hmm, this is interesting:

The pic is called ps3_frpg_120330_005433_HQSS. This could mean two things
- new content already running on consoles, so they'd probably get the edition as well at some point
- the footage we've seen so far might not have been from the PC version

From the interview it sounds like they haven't even begun porting it. I really think all the new stuff shown in the trailer is already running on the ps3 and they just don't want to announce it yet.

Yeah, I don't know. In getting those answers, I felt like this is going to be a straight port—resolution and framerate and all.

Seems too much hassle to worry about it now for me. I'll just wait until there's a real tech preview of the game (if there even is one, like pcgh or somewhere), or read about it on release. If they left the slowdown in because it is hard coded to the physics or something bizarre like that, I won't purchase it (at full price anyway, for $5 perhaps).

Tweaking Alice: Madness Returns to run at 60fps was a much better experience than playing the 30fps it is locked to by default. If this is similar to that, I'll have no problems buying it when it's corrected.

Yeah, I thought the exact same thing when I saw the footage. Looks just like the console versions.

im sure there will be a way to adjust the resolution (is that even something they can lock?)
but really, is a locked 30fps that big of a deal? jesus christ. if you're computer has the horse power it should run at a steady 30fps the entire time
i dont know what you guys expected out of this. the fact that it took an online petition to get this to come out obviously means its being done on a shoestring budget

sorry, but when you're used to a smooth and clean 60fps, a jittery 30fps looks terrible.

I expect to play it at 1920*1080 with driver forced AA, pristine image quality, and at least 60 (better 120) FPS. And I'm certain that will happen.

pretty sure the resolution/aa is guaranteed. i dont know about the framerate though. like everyone is saying, it could be tied to the physics

To me, and many others, it is. For many this along with resolution increase may just be the primary reason to even get this. Fingers crossed.

I still can't fathom that people are seriously considering the idea of a resolution lock in a 3D PC game. That won't happen.

If it was, the game would slow down when it drops below 30 on consoles. AFAIK it doesn't. And (hopefully) no one has programmed games like that since the early 90s.

We'll have to be closer at launch before we get a good look at how this will run on PC, really. Sounds like they've barely looked into technical details. And regardless of what From/Namco sets up, I'm sure modders will find ways to tweak it.

I guess, let me correct my statement a little—I'm not sure I'd sit around waiting for a super-tuned, kick-ass PC version of Dark Souls. I think if people are expecting that, they're going to be disappointed.

It's okay if you only use a keyboard or gamepad but terrible if you use a mouse. Especially if you're used to 120 fps.

I don't think anyone is expecting that. It will be "kick-ass" not because of any specific improvements made by the devloper, but by the simple merits of the platform -- that is running it with great IQ and no performance issues.

There are certain console ports which don't allow resolutions above 1920x1080. Darksiders comes to mind. Also SFIV and SSFIV - allows you to set 2560x1440 but simply upscales from 1080p. Just the menu fonts will be in the higher resolution, strangely enough. Not a huge deal for me as I generally would play those on my 1080p tv with a controller, but still!

I never expected the PC version to have any change in assets at all. Most console ports don't. I always expected this to be pretty much the console version in higher resolutions and framerates.

For gamers wondering why the developers have gone with Games for Windows Live over Steamworks for online connectivity, it turns out that Namco Bandai requested this of From Software. A Namco Bandai representative points to an already established server used in the Xbox 360 version of Dark Souls as one of the reasons for going with GFWL, but says that final specs and distribution details have yet to be determined. Stay tuned -- things could change.

So, realistically, what are the chances for Namco/From to drop GFWL here ?( they went out and spoke about it very quickly after all and it's still the deal breaker for thousand and thousand of people)

Actually the game tries to talk you into going down there to save Rhea very early on. Problem is Rhea was a dick early on so I didn't care to.

Wouldn't you get stuck down in TotG if you activated any of the bonfires down there? The only way I know to get out of the Catacombs once you make the drop is with a homeward bone back to one of the two Catacombs bonfires.

I wasn't aware of that. That's pretty damn terrible and the developers should be shamed in public.

You know what? If this game ships with a resolution lock I promise right now that I'll hack it to fix it.

She's honestly not far into the Tomb so you don't need to use a bonfire but even if you do you can still get out.

30/60 FPS doesn't matter in any game for me. I only care if the game is playable and don't have slowdowns. If it's 30FPS locked, I'm in. If it's 60, I'm in too.

It is a big deal when you're used to 120. I can deal with 60 (See: Sonic Generations), and 30 WOULD be an improvement over the original game, but I'd rather not have a cap.

As was mentioned above your post though, even obscure games like EDF: IA have gotten fixes for that rather quickly. I think Transformers: War for Cybertron has something too.

MATCHMAKING?!?!!

Why didn't consoles have this? My friend and I must've wasted hours and hours trying to link up in this game consistently.

same, i just want the framerate to be stable and not turn into a slideshow mess in some parts.

Is that, in a way, what the game currently has? How would the new system be implemented?

A large number of the PC guys are double dipping, and knowing the names of bosses isn't a huge spoiler in most cases.

Welll....there's 30 fps and then there's "30 fps".

A properly synchronized 30 fps with a completely even update actually looks pretty decent. As long as things remain consistent, it is certainly acceptable though not optimal.

Unfortunately, 30 fps locking does not work on the PC. Simply engaging a soft limit of the framerate to 30 fps does not produce the same consistency as 30 fps on a console. Whether a problem with Direct-X or some other factor limiting your framerate actually adds a significant amount of frame judder and skipping to the image. 30 fps limiting simply doesn't work properly on the PC as a result.

Games that force this upon the player, then, wind up looking even worse in motion than they did on consoles. So a limited PC 30 fps <<<< 30 fps that you might see on consoles.

I would hope that 60 fps is possible with this PC port, though.

It is a big deal when you're used to 120. I can deal with 60 (See: Sonic Generations), and 30 WOULD be an improvement over the original game, but I'd rather not have a cap.
What type of display are you using?

The difference between 60 and 120 fps on an LCD is limited by the slow response times of all LCDs. You do see more images per second, but this doesn't translate into cleaner motion.

On a CRT, though, 120 fps is absolutely sublime. I just played a number of games on a good CRT this past week at 120 and, man, it looks and feels amazing. Going back to any LCD after that is truly difficult (hell, even plasmas and OLED displays can't hold a candle to 120 fps on a CRT).

Locked 30fps = no buy

There's no excuse for that level of laziness, and it's certainly not worthy of support. I mean shit, even the worst hackjob ports don't have a 30 fps cap (SR2 PC, for instance).

Goh British Miyazaki (hereinafter, Miyazaki) Yes. Basically will be faithful to transplantation. Nor does it change it does not have the resolution, frame rate that becomes 60.

I hope someone with Japanese skills can clear this up.

Why hasn't anyone asked them if the footage shown was from consol....Oh, I forgot. Information from the event is heavily embargoed...

The footage from the trailer? No clue. However, when we were sitting in the room doing the Q&A (and when I did my interview), we were seeing the actual PC version being demoed. However, we saw almost nothing of the game via that, and so it was hard to tell how much better it may have been.

It needs to have a fixed framerate (at least a solid 30) for me to support it.

I won't buy it if they haven't fixed the framerate. I just can't support that.
Fixed framerate for 3D games is insane crap.
Even worse than that, it's a form of barbarity.

I want to add something funny to this translation but it really just stands on its own, doesn't it?
Are they joking or what?
They make it sound like if they were deliberately trying to kill any chance for this port.

I'd say it's a reliable 50% chance.

So there is hope, I like that.

now that they know the issue and what the PC gamers wants,I hope Bamco/From do the right thing and drop GFWL for the fans sake and for the game itself.

Will not support a shit PC port unless on sale with Steam.

It will most likely be available on steam, but that not the issue, the big problem here is that the game uses GFWL.

I wish there was some elaboration on that question in the interview...

I want to be hopeful and just interpret what he said as saying there won't be any resolution changes (to the textures), and the game won't be (forced into) 60fps...

Wouldn't they have to go out of their way to lock down the resolution and framerate?

I'm sure people will find a way to mod the game to support higher resolutions/framerates, but damn... this is just frustrating.

Miyazaki: Yes. It will be a very faithful port. There won't be any changes to the resolution, and it won't be 60fps.

if that is true, i wont be going near this port.

i can deal with GFWL ...what i can't deal with is half assed and fucked port jobs.

Diablo 3 will easily carry me through the summer ....most likely the rest of the year.
