Wii U Speculation thread IV: Photoshop rumors and image memes

The core problem with using the Wii name is that the public is soon going to realize that not only isn't the U the same concept, it's a strategy in a completely different direction. The Wii was simple to entice casuals - a controller that looks like a tv remote, few buttons, motion control.

But the Wii U? Completely the opposite of simple. One person gets a multi-button touch screen tablet, while the others use Wii remotes with a completely different setup. What? I'm guessing in most cases, the classic controller is going to be used for multiplayer just for the sake of control scheme consistency. Along with the problem of "if every game streams, then every game has to compensate for any touch screen innovations." For the soccer mom, she's going to think "this is too much for me!" But the video where they were showing the tablet on a dining room table playing checkers and such could still draw some in.

I've responsded to this line of thinking many times before regarding the Wii U's controller and asymmetrical nature, so I will simply say this time: I think people are horribly underestimating the Wii audience and these control concepts by suggesting that it throws out all of the appeal the Wii had.

An example: when I showed my parents the first trailer of the Wii controller, they both said they wanted to play it. Never cared for video games before. They later spent $400 buying a Wii, along with some other games over the following year.

I showed them the Chase Mii and Battle Mii videos. They had the same reaction. I hate to use them as a barometer for product success, but they represent the hardest of the Wii audience to get - and they're already at least interested with very little to go on.

It is different from the Wii - that's true. But it has some aspects of what made the Wii popular while offering something new that isn't without value.

Now somebody leak those specs, 'cause "Ohhh Baby I like it Raaaaw!"

the minuted Nintendo had revealed the name of the system at E3 2011, I immediately started calling it the Wuu. It sounded much better.

People forget that Nintendo has not even initiated their WiiU marketing campaign.
Surely, by the time Xmas 2012 comes around, the general public will understand
what the WiiU is all about. Stores will have demo stations, tv programming will be saturated with commercials from Nintendo and third parties, magazine ads, game reviews, and of course word of mouth.

Its been a strange year, I mean partially due to Nintendo's silence.
But people forget that its games that sell the system.
If Nintendo comes up with a fun and novel way to use the uTab that grabs the masses, they'll have a hit on their hands.
If they don't, they'll struggle.

The amount of people wanting pikmin 3 back then makes me kinda sad it didnt come to Wii hopefully they really enjoy it on Wii-U.

Be glad it didn't. It's a game that really benefits from HD.
HD is nice, but I think I could've handled a world where I played Pikmin 3 on Wii and was now waiting for a 2012 Pikmin 4.

Absolutely. And that's what I'm describing: Chase Mii and Battle Mii were two of the very few things shown for the controller concept. I have no doubt that they, along with others, will appear together in a U Play title packed in with the system. Why? Because, like Wii Sports, they illustrate what this setup does that could never be done previously. So long as its fun while delivering on that differentiation factor, it should do well.

What is key for me is that Nintendo has a touchscreen on the controller but hasnt really played it up much. Most of their focus has been on the new dimension created by having a second, movable, and contextually intelligent screen. And that tells me that anyone who looks at that screen solely as a place to stick a HUD isn't really catching on to what could be its most valuable function and use.

Ah, only forty-four more days until it's the most wonderful time of the year, though it's even less than that. And only four more days until Nintendo's Fiscal Year Earnings Release (for the 72nd fiscal year). Next week ought to be an unmasking one, though of course the veil won't be made completely estranged before early June.

By the way, I'm making the E3 General Information and FAQ thread, anything special someone wants in that?

Is that a gif of the whole 2011 Press Conference in fast-forward!?
Yes. It's only 500 frames though, seeing Photoshop CS6 doesn't support more than that when importing video frames, and I didn't wanna copy paste a bunch of layers several hundred times to make it longer. And besides, Abload.de and Flickr aren't too fond of files exceeding 10 MB in size.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't shown at the conference, but rather, it's the subject of Miyamoto's Roundtable.

If they're doing something at all interesting with Pikmin that showcases the controller or their online plans, it should be shown at the conference.

Well that is what I found most interesting, Namco didn't say No, they would have if they weren't working on anything, they could of said something like "not at this time" or whatever, but then again, Namco and Nintendo are pretty close if my memory serves me right, Nintendo even has some stock in the company, and just hired one of their talents that fell from Sega originally, and moved him to NST, so I am pretty sure Japanese devs are keeping tight lipped because Nintendo wants them to.

As for western devs, well I think all the major ones will be there... EA is on everything, Ubisoft already has it's biggest franchise on the Wii U (AC3) and I don't see Capcom not porting over RE6, heck they might bring RE5 over... I think Nintendo has a lot to prove, but I think they also have a lot to show at E3 that will change a lot of peoples perceptions of the company... If I could ask for anything on Wii U, it would be GTA5 to be there at E3, that would be a big thing IMO.

Namco already said they were deciding on whether to do an original Ridge Racer or port Ridge Racer Unbounded for launch of Wii U. Here's an updated list I made from the other thread. Feel free to add or make changes.

Just watch...Pikmin won't be shown at all.

No way it's not shown.

Not only will it be shown, it will be the first-party flagship title for the launch of the console.

The conference will probably be two things.

1. Third party games.
2. Concept demos/games.

A repeat of the last year? Hell no!

Heck, we already KNOW they are going to show Pikmin and Super Mario for Wii U. There's no telling what else they could drop on us.

I'm not suggesting they spend 5 minutes on it. Just say, "Hey, here's Pikmin! *shows some quick gameplay using both the TV screen and the uTab screen* In addition to exciting new gameplay opened up by the uTab, Pikmin U will also receive additional areas to explore and challenges to face over the months following its release via NiN."

There. Done. People online will dissect the gameplay videos for days in threads and talk about how excited they are for the additional content.

No, not a repeat of last year.
They didn't even show that at the conference last year.
They'll put a big focus on showing off third party games on stage, running on the Wii U.
Particularly exclusives like Lego City Stories, Killer Freaks and whatever else they have (TS4, ED2?).
Then they'll show off new concept games (Retro's game, a racing game?).
They may tease a Mario (I say may, because I still don't believe we'll see this at E3) and Pikmin, but those will likely be saved for their own thing for Miyamoto to show off that night.

Of the games we already know about, I'm most excited about Lego City Stories. Open-world Lego game? Yes, please.

look forwards to Halo 4, Halo 5, Halo DLC, Halo Side story, Halo cartoon, Halo mugs, Halo avatar, Halo books

ps its the same game you shoot things that what you excited to hear about the same game you be playing with new maps and hats

Is English not your first language or you doing a parody post of what an idiot sounds like?

Because mission accomplished, if the latter.

edit: Ah, I see Cabbie already called you on this bullshit and you kinda stared at the ground and kicked up some dirt in response to your ignorance. NVM then

I'm only excited for those bolded and I'm likely buying them...I yet have to see something impressive about the rest :)

btw... I really hope they have something from SSB4.. a 10 seconds teaser trailer would be enough :(

Man I'm excited for the launch lineup of what we already know. Wait till e3 when they pull out some unknown titles to blow us all away.

A launch of Pikmin 3, Aliens: Coloniel Marines and Arkham City (depending on how unique the Wii U version is) would represent a really solid Day One purchase for me. Anything else is a bonus.

To be honest, Nintendo would have to drop a huge bollock at E3 for me not to want this straight away, even based on what we know now.

Epic Mickey 2 and Tomb Raider won't happen on Wii U, the devs already said so. RE6's chances are pretty slim.

After seeing Shane's comments last night, my guess is Resident Evil 6 is a guaranteed launch title.

Mmm, that feeling seems rather misguided.
We have no evidence to suggest it won't come to the Wii U, and there was never a denial of the game.
Well, a week or two ago they said they had no plans to bring it to Wii U ("at this time") which suggests to me if it does get a port, it probably won't be at launch

Didn't Capcom say they have no plans of bringing it to Wii U? I remember reading that two weeks ago or so

Edit: nevermind... it was "at this time" :p

sorry.
