Slow news day at IGN. "Wii U: It's Time to Change the Name"

This site is just a joke now......

Last year, the company finally indicated it was ready to switch gears, moving into an HD era that would appeal to an even wider audience than before. However, one problem has haunted Nintendo since it gave gamers a glimpse of its new hardware– the name of the system. Too clever for its own good, the name "Wii U" sends far too many mixed messages at a time when none can be afforded.

Is this article supposed to be bad or something? I've read the opinions of many people on this very board that think the same thing about "Wii U".

Or is it a rule now that threads linking to IGN must mention how horrible you think they are?

So it's like General without the numbers?

Um what? Do you remember who the Wii appealed to IGN? Cause you can't get no wider than everyone...

And bit late to complain now, it's been almost a year and now they want it changed.

In 2006, everyone said the Wii was a dumb name and Nintendo was right not to listen to the backlash as most of the world knows what a Wii is and won't accidentally call it a Playcube or a Gamebox.

I think they're stuck with being too associated with the Wii since the Wii U asks that you use your existing Wii remotes and nunchucks. It could potentially doom them, and they could change the name which would put questions of this being another Wii SKU to rest.

Not like Nintendo ever does anything meaningful with feedback...

You can't spell completely worthless, idiotic site that does more trolling than their own users without IGN.

It may be a slow news day but i sorta agree with them. Never liked the Wii name at all. Just go back and call it the Nintendo Revolution, which was the original Wiis codename.

I really don't understand the need for the name change people have gone on with since the system's unveiling. It's serviceable and with enough time something that becomes and afterthought.

At the same time though, I was fond of the idea of Nintendo U. :p

I haven't read the article, but I agree with the headline.

They should call it the Nintendo Engine.

Or the Ngine so they can copyright it.

Or the Nintengine even. That flows well enough.

Nothing against Rich or Aubrey, but I checked out IGN Nintendo a few days ago and the headline stories went something along the lines of this:

"Top Shiggy Games We Love"
"What Dream Games Should Ninty Develop"
"Retro and Mature Zelda. Match made in heaven."

It just sounded like IGNBoard kids posting news stories. I understand I am a bit older, but that definitely was not the direction Matt / Fran / Bozon / Peer originally started IGN Nintendo with. But hey, maybe their readership is up with their extremely skewed demographic.

wait, don't a ton of people on this very same forum share the exact same opinion as this IGN article?

Yeah, the Wii name is probably too popular to ditch now. Though I did like that rumor that the Wii U was just going to be called "The Nintendo"

They should call it what Nintendo was originally gonna call the Wii: The N5.

Except, you know, add a 1 to signify the current generation: N6.

Course...that doesn't sound as cool as N5 for some reason. :(

Yeah, IGN used to be pretty good back in 2002-2005.

I'm not going to click through because IGN sucks and if they get something right it's totally by accident, but I think this is one of those times.

Tons of people still think the Wii U is a Wii controller and not a new console. The fact that the name is literally "Wii" with an extra letter can't be helping.

I really miss the old IGN Nintendo team. I actually cared about what they had to say because they wrote intelligent articles and gave good interviews. For the most part anyway.

Gotta keep the playpen of slow adults happy somehow.

I mean there's not much worth writing about with the Wii anymore, so I get that it's tough coming up with new content. Still, much of their stuff feels like I'm reading GamePro, where they will do a cover story with ZERO news or info. Smash Bros. Brawl and Gears of War 2 are the two best examples I can think of.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.

Trouble is, when they make the successor to the N6, they'll be sued by the makers of Mass Effect....

Yup. I miss Matt and Bozon. Matt was great at getting leaks, he wasn't hesitant to smack Nintendo on a regular basis without coming-off as one of those dime-a-dozen media haters, and he was able to go toe-to-toe with the very, umm, special editors from IGN's other sections.

No clicks for IGN anymore. They need to go on a click diet.

The name is fine.

Wii is one of the most successful brands in the history of consumer electronics, and they'd be insane to ditch it.

Seconded. Matt and Bozon were amazing, specially pre-e3 weeks. The podcast they did was also a blast to hear. When they left, IGN went to the shitter.

They don't even have "teams" anymore from what I understand. Bad move, their management seems pretty damn poor.
