And sharpening IS a mixed bag. Some textures look much nicer, and some actively look worse. Personally I feel it's more useful in Diablo III, some of the issues I have with it are there too, but it's just so damn blurry without it that too much detail gets lost.

Since I'm waiting for GTX680s to be back in stock anywhere before I do another playthrough, I decided to play through Witcher 1 in the meantime since I never played it. I'm really liking it so far. One question I have about it though, are the extra weapons useful at all? The torch I can see being useful as an alternative to using cat, but is there any reason at all to use a dagger/axe/club instead of my swords?
The only true useful alternative weapon is the torch, just because with it you can see in the dark and some monster are weak to fire.

I've used the settings in the OP for high end machines and set my user.ini to read only and this is what my configurator looks like now:

Is this right as I want DOF-cutscenes on and cinematic DOF off? I take it I should set scatterDOF to 0 and cutscene DOF to 1 if I want that? Also it says my LOD is minimal and my texture size is very small even though I set it to 900mb in the user.ini. Did I somehow mess it up?

Congifurator file is going to overwrite what you put in the ini. Just copy paste the ini from the first page and don't bother opening the configurator.

I set the file to read only before I opened the configurator so it shouldn't affect it. I'm just using it to check if it has the right settings.

Should I force 16x Anisotropic filtering through the nvidia control panel as I can't seem to find a setting for it?

I know it's probably buried in here somewhere... Can someone explain what the different DOF settings do in the .ini?

I see AllowDOF which I imagine is for when you are out exploring.

AllowScatterDOF which is for.... conversation? Mini-games?

Cutscene DOF seems fairly obvious.

Forcing anything throug the control panel just won't work.

AllowDOF is the DOF during gameplay.
Cutscene DoF as you said.
Scatter DoF should be the bokeh during cutscene/conversation, so the cinematic DoF...
As far as I've understood.

Edit: Yes, it is, just tried this way, set scatterDof on 0, then through the configurator I've enabled the cinematic depth of field, and scatterDof turned on 1.

Funny thing with EE at least for me, despite the fact you have it set to read only...the configurator will still change your ini file if you hit apply. I had to change actually permissions so the configurator would stop messing with my shiz

Is anyone else running into an issue where your savegames don't get a proper screenshot attached? Ever since the Enhanced Edition was released, mine are just showing a hideous color gradient where a screenshot should be.

Using the steam version? Did you hit the steam cloud saves by any chance? Mine was doing that just before I could no longer make any new saves. I just deleted my steam game and redownloaded on GoG.

I enabled cloud saves and then disabled it a few minutes later. It's still doing it, even when I start with a brand new game.

Cloud saving was actually promised as a feature for the original Steam release of the game. Can't believe how badly they fucked it up after all this time. I guess I'll just wait for a patch since I'm already busy with other stuff.

yeah it's glitched. Once you start using the steam cloud it glitches it and I'm not sure you can't unuse the steam cloud. There is a fix out there but it didn't work for me. I think once you fill up your steam cloud quota you're going to lose your ability to save. At least I did.

For all their improvements, I can't understand why the miserable save system wasn't targeted. It might even be worse than the first game's system! Who thought it was a good idea to not even allow you to choose a save slot? My save folder would be in the gigabytes if I wasn't pruning it.

edit: Just checked. The file sizes are a lot better than TW1 but oh god I hate how you can't overwrite existing saves.

Agreed, and if you don't delete them after a while it affects game performance. load times become a bitch

I have a 5770 and even with all the settings turned to their lowest, I can't hit anything above 25 frames per second. I don't know what's wrong, as it seems like everyone else with the card is running the game absolutely fine.

I managed to stop the game from looking at the cloud storage using these threads:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2470784
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2655006&page=3

It's now reading from my Documents folder again but I've noticed that the game will often forget to create a BMP for new save games. So now I get no image at all instead of that color gradient. Is this happening for any of you?

It was happening to me, and it became so unreliable that I just said "fuck it". Uninstalled it from steam and downloaded the GOG version.

I have a 5770 too and the .ini configuration on OP works very well, as did the stuttering fix. still drops to the low 30s in busy areas but I cannot turn off SSAO :/

Crap, I think I'm the only person who doesn't bother turning bloom off :/ Don't suppose anyone has comparison shots?

I also don't turn it off. Tried it with both settings and honestly I just like the look better. I understand the complaints but I'm a fan of bloom for no real reason other than I think it adds a certain intensity to the visuals.

I tried the .ini file and not much changed, but I'll try the stuttering fix. Thanks.

Hey guys I just got this game and was a little disappointed with the performance I'm getting. I have a Samsung RF712 notebook with these specs:

Intel Core i7-2670QM 2,2GHz turbo 3,1GHz/ 6MB cache
8 GB DDR3
AMD HD6650M 1 GB, Dedicated (up to 2 GB). I'm a little confused about this one. Looking at the properties on my system it says 2GB, but I have no clue.

As you can probably tell by now, I'm not an expert in PC gaming. I bought the notebook mostly for work, but decided to try a little gaming.

The thing is I was expecting at least to run things on medium at 1080p. Not so. I'm getting ~15 fps at 1080p on low. On medium the sound would stutter at the start up logos, which I found really weird. I'm getting around ~30 fps on low at 1200x720.

Does that sound about right? Or can I do anything to get some improvements? I haven't touched my card settings and this is the first game I've run on the machine, so I'm probably doing something really stupid. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds about right to me, GPU is a bottleneck, so lowering resolution increases framerate. TW2 can be pretty demanding, you probably need a laptop geared specifically towards gaming to play it decently.

Does this game support anisotropic filtering at all? Far off textures look really blurry.

You should be able to force AF through your card's drivers, or create a custom profile with 3rd party software. There's a few screenshots in the OP showing AF, here's no AF vs 16xAF.

Lowering resolution to 720p gave me the biggest performance gains. At 720 the difference between high and low is about 5 fps. Lowering resolution further didn't give much gains and looked horrible. I'm getting around 20-25 fps on high, but it doesn't seem choppy like a console game would at the fps. I'll see if I can live with it.

Because at that point you are CPU bound.

what happens if you put ubersampling=1? Does it do anything?

It apparently doesn't hit as hard on your machine, but it still stresses your graphics card quite a bit. I haven't even attempted US, I don't even think the 680 I just put in could still do it justice. We have a couple GAFers here who have tri-sli 680's, I wonder how good the framerate is for people who possess such greatness.

Hm, just ran into similar issues with saving. Died in combat, hit load, and it brought me back to a save from about an hour prior. My save game list shows none of my progress for that hour where I absolutely saved a few times. I had Steam cloud saves enabled. Closed and re-opened the game (it always does a .NET framework repair when I launch it, which is annoying but quick on SSD) and if I move ten feet and save it I'll not see that save show up (doesn't matter whether Steam cloud is enabled or disabled).

Any fixes? About ten hours in and this is pretty disappointing since I feel like I can't play the game at this point.

Completely deleting and then reinstalling will fix it. Until you reach your cloud limit again. If you want to play it you need to download your free gog copy. They fucked up the steam version.

Ugh. That's ridiculous and disappointing, but I'll give it a shot. Thanks.

If it's Nvidia, download the latest beta firmware which includes the ability to do adaptive vsync at half the refresh rate of the monitor (i.e. 30hz if you're monitor is 60hz). Essentially locking the game at 30 fps. You can also manually set an FPS lock outside of the vsync option if you don't want to use vsync at all.

If it's an ATI card, I believe you can use a program like dxtory: http://dxtory.com/v2-home-en.html to lock the FPS to whatever you like.

Mind you dxtory also works with Nvidia but since Nvidia added support for adaptive vsync (and the FPS lock option) with their latest beta driver for most of their recent cards, there's no reason not to use it.

I want to warn everyone that this game has TERRIBLE pop in on random PC's so buyer beware. I have more than enough power to run it but people/objects/foilage literally pops in 5 feet in front of you. I have tried every config I can find and no setting appears to fix this issue.

This is also being reported on the Witcher 2 forums and doesn't have a resolution in place.

If anyone has experienced this please let me know. I am running the latest drivers for my system.

So here's the deal... I noticed I'm one of the people that suffer from this terrible stutter or frame skipping call it what you want, I proceed to download the stutter fix from the OP, the stutter is now gone but D3DO now doesn't detect the game and I have screen tearing.

I enabled Vsync on the config and now the stuttering/frame skipping is back, not to mention I feel like the game is running around 40ish FPS while without Vsync it seems like 60, I used RadeonPro and forced Vsync and Triple Buffering and the changes don't seem to go through, I enabled the stronger API detection setting in RadeonPro and it works now but the stuttering/frame skipping is back and the game feels choppy.

WTF GAF!?? I'm at a fucking loss here. It seems to happen to every game that I put a "d3d9.dll" in a game folder, it breaks D3DOverrider, it happened when I put ENB on Skyrim, I had to enable Vsync through Skyrim's config, except Vsync is not broken in Skyrim as in TW2.

Someone help please, stutter/frame skipping is awful but so is screen tearing (although I will choose no stutter over screen tearing any day)

Can you make it application-specific?

Hey you guys, which FSAA method do you guys use? With the ingame method I get some flickering textures from time to time (grey stones for example). With FXAA this is almost gone but also very blurry. SMAA injector doesn't seem to work...
