There's no guaranty Nintendo will take E3. Not when this is Nintendo. I'm sure Microsoft and Sony have a ton of goodies and big surprises they're holding back for E3 (though I expect more leaks closer to E3), and I'm not totally confident Nintendo will pull the Wii U re-reveal off.

A chunk of their conference dedicated to ports that will show up on other platforms, even with Wii U gimmicks trying to impress, just wont cut it.

Agreed. I'm almost sure MS and Sony have something going on for this years E3. They're not going to let the Wii U and Nintendo outshine them this year.

If all I see is ports and first party titles I don't like I won't be impressed at all.

Not yet, but they probably will this week.

Honestly that would be a bad thing if we barely hear anything about the 3DS. I'd like it to be 50-50 or at most 70% Wii U 30% 3DS

Thanks.

Obviously 3DS is very important and they need to discuss it somewhat but it's already an established, successful system and making attendees and fans wait too long for our much needed Wii U pay off will really hurt their conference.

I'm hoping that Nintendo goes 15 minutes for 3DS, and the remainder for the Wii U.

That would be perfect.

Anyone else planning on missing work to watch Nintendo's press conference? :p

I always take at least that morning off since the 2006 E3. Although the conference starts here in Nashville (CST) at 11:00, so that can make for a long morning of anticipation.

Best pre-conference semi-related time waster was Spike or G4 running King of Kong (which I had not seen) right before E3 2010 [skyward sword, dkc returns, 3ds, ki:uprising, etc).

But DirecTV doesn't carry G4 anymore, so back to the streaming it is...

Nintendo is always a crazy gamble. They've held true to the 2 good conferences followed by 1 bad conference rule for the past 6 years though :p

Hasnt everything MS had to show the past two e3's been leaked in advanced? I'd be suprised if it didnt happen again.

Just watched last years Nintendo e3 conf and its actually not bad, the 3DS stuff was good and despite the confusion some had with the Wii U I thought they did a decent job of showing off the controller.

I completely agree. But, if E3 2006 is something to go by, Nintendo is going to have a ton of first party stuff shown, and despite how jaded and cynical many of us can be, I am convinced Nintendo properties in HD are going to be met very very well.

Depends how you look at it. My memory of it consists mainly of confusion and fear though.

Fear's a good emotion for that one. Gotta save-up your lives for that final gauntlet just to get to the final palace. My god, how I hate those rock-chuckin' dinosaurs along that road..

Only company I think that could steal the overall E3 thunder would be Microsoft but they have to do alot. Sony like Sony always blows its load pre E3 and people always explain it away as its ok they will have a ton at E3 and yet they never do.

yeah I'm sure 30 mins of kinect footage and a 15 minute COD demo followed by another 15 minute halo 4 demo is going to steal it :p

But I could see MS last second deciding to tease their next console, but even then that's not enough to steal anything. Unless it is, I don't know. I remember when E3 used to be about games.

Yeah you're right, the conference could start close to noon for me. The suspense is going to be crazy that morning.

I could always get the news, but nothing beats seeing it live at the same time as everyone else.

If Sony or MS had a big reveal for whatever Respawn or Bungie are working on now (FPS and FPS MMO I would guess, respectively), that would be really cool and make a big splash. The Last of Us and/or Last Guardian could make waves for Sony.

But in general I find it hard for Nintendo to not make the most waves and buzz because people just won't get as buzzed for late generation games compared to new hardware. And there won't be any downward buzz due to a price, etc.

Don't forget the child actors, and justin bieber worship.

if MS pulls out another kinect heavy show, it'll send a pretty clear message that they really don't give a flying eff anymore about hardcore gamers and that they know they've already got em by the balls.

And most of that demographic wont care because MS would be right.

If they do not have an amazing conference this year though, there probably won't be any truly great ones for a whole gen :(
Not seeing them messing up their start into new gen. Though in these opportunities Nintendo really should make it slightly longer than 1 hour. Especially since they must also keep focus on 3DS.

It's a good thing these Nintendo Direct's have been clearing up potential time spent on 3DS.

Yeah, hopefully they hence spend little time on NSMB2 and such. That will sell regardless anyway.

The fact that they've starved the Wii of first-party material over the past year or two has me pretty confident.

Nintendo screwing up the pre-launch E3 showing for a new system would be a first.

I really doubt that there will be even half as much focus on multiplats as you all seem to think. I guess last year really killed your confidence in them. At least the ridiculously pessimistic outlook you guys have means that you won't be disappointed.

normally i wouldn't be, but they also let the 3ds coast on third party games made by losers, so they've been more neck-deep in console stuff than handheld stuff for sure.

I'm going to watch E3 2009 now. I already watched 04, 06 and 2010. Going to get myself even more hyped now. :)

I still think we should do a watching party of some sort on the weekend before E3.

E3 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, & 2011 - about 8 hours of E3 goodness, a recap of this past generation. It'd be incredible for personal hype levels, haha..
For those old losers among us who like staying at home on Saturday nights, it'd be perfect!

We'll see. At this point I figure it's theirs to win provided they've done a good enough job getting their third party act together. Say what you will about multi platform titles, them pulling off an on par third party showing this Fall plus a good bunch of exclusive stuff would be huge for a lot of us.

I'm doing my best to keep my expectations lower than that though. Honestly them getting everything in the first 6 months might turn out to be a bad thing because the install base might not be big enough to support that.

I think we Nintendo fans are going to be hyped to the heavens, no doubt. We'll easily think Nintendo "wins" E3.

But for converting new hardcore fans? I remain ever-skeptical. Nintendo could have a whole chorus line of rock-ribbed, hardcore western gaming god-developers, and lots of the core feel so wronged and out-of-sync with Nintendo that few would be convinced.

The rumored device wouldn't use NFC, but the same technology the 3DS uses for StreetPass (which I think is some kind of bluetooth technology, but I have no idea to be honest).
What if this pocket device come with both Street Pass tech' & NFC? Street Pass for passive social interactions "à la 3DS" with NFC for active social interaction (whatever it is) and to [give all our money] do usual NFC stuff? Also, NFC becoming the big thing in the next years it could be used by people without NFCized smartphones as a "cheap" yet useful replacement solution... Don't know if it makes sense.

Always a real fun to look at these graph. I wonder how they will look around E3? Thanks for that and your "info recap'".

What if I die before E3.
Steet Pass -> Death Pass
NFC -> DFC

Aww, man.. we've gotta experience the downs to appreciate the ups! It's part of the drama, haha!

Yup!

That's the lowest I've ever felt as a gamer and I've never hated Nintendo so much in my life. I personally don't want to relive that moment.

The next three E3s made up for it imo.

2008 in retrospect is one of the world's great comedies. Watching it live was worse than A Serbian Film.

So remind me, it went:

2006: ???
2007: ???
2008: Bad (Johnny Drums, Animal Crossing was the "core" game)
2009: ???
2010: Good (3DS unveil dazzles everyone)
2011: ???

'08 and '10 are the only two obvious ones that stick out for me. If I recall the Revolution was unveiled in '06 and '07 had Galaxy, Brawl, etc. Don't remember much from '09 or last year even. I recall Nintendo "winning" last year, but I missed most of E3 due to working long days at the time.

2006 - Wii's real debut, pretty much their most successful E3 ever. Brawl, Prime 3, and Galaxy were revealed as future titles, there were stampedes for the wii line
2007 - Brawl, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Kart Wii, Galaxy, Mario Strikers Charged, Phantom Hourglass, Wii Fit
2008 - Oh GOD someone kill cammie, ravi drums nightmare fuel and wii music
2009 - Wii Sports Resort, Galaxy 2, NSMBWii, Other M, Mario & Luigi, Golden Sun DS, Spirit Tracks
2010 - Amazing 3DS reveal, 007, DKCR, Skyward Sword, Kirby Epic Yarn, Kid Icarus
2011 - snore fest and botched wii u reveal
2012 - ????????

I think they're going to deliver on the hype.

I agree, this is Nintendo's conference to lose and being Nintendo and what we've heard about the system so far re specs it's quite possible they could do that. I guess it depends on who they are trying to win over. If it's like that casual heavy E3 from a few years ago (2008?) Nintendo themselves might think they've been real winner but the gamers and gaming press would send them to the dogs.

For me, for them to make this E3 the bomb, they need:

- To show the Wii U is graphically superior to the current gen by a noticeable amount. I believe it is, they just need to show it by having a great game/demo ready to WOW people.

- They need to drop a megaton with some sort of exclusive (timed or not). Diablo III coming to Wii U first of the consoles, WoW on console, GTA timed or somesuch.

- They need to bring back a Nintendo gamers game (BG&E for instance) that blows our nostalgic socks right off.

- They need to reveal a complete and unique online system (Streetpass cards, examples of things NFC could be used for) in a form that only Nintendo could do (In a good way :) )

- They need to show 2 controllers working with at least one game

- They need to at show (Even if not playable) a massive list of games coming to Wii U.

If they can do all those things for me, I will be mighty happy.

if MS pulls out another kinect heavy show, it'll send a pretty clear message that they really don't give a flying eff anymore about hardcore gamers and that they know they've already got em by the balls.
And most of that demographic wont care because MS would be right.

I'd be surprised if MS do this. I'd think Sony or MS would want to steal as much thunder as they can muster for E3. If they've bought some insane exclusive like GTA V on 360 3 months before other consoles (Unlikely but that level is what I'm getting at). They might make a dent.

What I really think MS and Sony would do is some Killzone type target render. It's easy to do cause you don't really need real hardware.

Ah thanks for the reminder. For me Nintendo's 2006 success will forever be overshadowed by the Sony's Conference that year which was the worst one I'd seen until Konami 2010.

On this, I admit, I have no idea.

errr..

Any ideas, anyone?
{*laughs weakly*}

I have an idea. How about twitch.tv? They use that over on Wrassle-GAF to run the "Hey everybody watch me play N64 all night!" weekly events.

edit: Hmm, though it seems to be focused specifically on game sharing.

edit²: Oh, of course! http://www.justin.tv/ ← that's what Wrassle-GAF uses to watch… well, I'll not get into the specifics there, but you can probably stream your current desktop (and therefore any fullscreened video) there to anybody.
