Gonna have to disagree here, because I think you and I are looking at things from opposite perspectives. I mean, the problem I run into with the old system is that levelling after 30 is boring. Once you've unlocked the skills, what does a level up get you? Some incremental improvements to your stats? Your level feels meaningless, and levelling up isn't exciting or fun. Tying unlocks to your level means that every time you level up, you get something new. You check the skill page to see what you unlocked, and you're enticed to try a new build revolving around a skill you wouldn't normally use, but that rune looks so good. You call it a restriction on what you can do, I call it an exciting opportunity to do more things as you progress.
Completely agree, i think it's awesome the way it opens up. I played all classes till 13 in beta, and every new skill/rune i unlocked, i tried out, even if the description made it sound weak. If people had the choice to unlock/buy specific runes, they would probably only choose 2-4 per skill (those which sound most powerful/efficient), while with the current system they will try out every single rune and skill. It benefits experimenting greatly.

I just want to charge stuff and then whirlwind everything in proximity.

Why isn't it May 15 yet?

My plan with the barb is to buff his speed with frenzy(with vanguard rune)/sprint, then use whirlwind with the hurricane rune which applies your movement speed to the skill. That way I'll be zooming through groups of enemies and can cover more distance.

So in an effort to pass the time between now and the 15th I dug out all my old loot games from my game cabinet. Dug out Titan quest + immortal throne and Dungeon siege 2 + Broken world. Also have sacred 2 on 360 and diablo 1 and 2 on pc. Tempted to preorder torchlight 2 and get torchlight one free on steam.

Any suggestions on where to start or if you think it's worth grabbing a torchlight 2 preorder to try out torchlight?

craaaap, i decided to buy the game with Blizzard after all now and i downloaded the Client so i'd be ready come May 15th!

So i download the installer, all 7.66 gigs of it and then when i try to run the setup file i get this:

"Error code BLZPTS00008 failed to extract required files from an archive"

anyone know how to solve this? I checked Blizz forums and some people had the same problem but the solutions like "run in safe mode" or "turn off your AV/Firewall" etc have not worked for me :(

Well didn't really get to finish off the beta as I had hoped. Had a bit of an emergency with one of my dogs. Anyhow, uninstalling now and hoping the next couple weeks go by quickly!

I would say yes, only 5 bucks more than buying Torchlight on its own. Great game, very easy to sink 20-30 hours into.

Not sure, are you logged into windows as admin?

I've been playing Path of Exile Beta. It's fantastic, and is a great modern day clone of D2. It has some great twists on the D2 model, such as all active abilities being tied to gems that you acquire and then slot into your gear, and potions on your belt replenish as you kill enemies. The passive skill tree is simply massive, perhaps too big. It has some problems too though, it lacks a certain level of charm and personality - feels generic. Also, the combat isn't satisfying in the same way D3 is... the characters just don't have that "UMPH" when they hit.

I alo installed D2 from my battle net account and actually bought LOD off Blizzard's site for $10, probably a mistake. D2 still holds up pretty well. The animation looks so stiff now!

The downloader is a torrent client, so if you run it again, save to the same location it will checksum the download to make sure it's 100% in order.

New AH information is available:

Want to know more about Diablo III's new auction house feature? We've just updated the Diablo III web site with a comprehensive Auction House guide that walks you through the ins and outs of Diablo III's in-game item marketplace, including details on buying and selling, a breakdown of how the real-money auction house works (in regions where available), and more. You'll also find some important information on Battle.net account-security requirements that players interested in using the real-money auction house will need to know about.

The gold-based auction house opens its doors worldwide on May 15 with the launch of Diablo III, and we plan to bring the real-money auction house online approximately one week after that. This is a new service that includes lots of complex elements, so we are going to take a little extra time to ensure the game gets off to a good start before we flip the switch and open the real-money auction house for business.

For more information, head to the freshly minted Diablo III Auction House website, or check out the updated Auction House FAQ.

Imoprtant Points:

  • Transaction Fee (Gold Auction House): 15% of final sale price
  • Transaction Fee (Real-Money Auction House): $1.00 USD / $1.00 AUD / 1,00 € / $12.00 MXN / $4.50 ARS / $500 CLP / R$ 1,80 / 1£ GBP / 50 р. (1 доллар США) per equipment-item (weapons, armor, accessories, and other unique items), 15% of final sale price for commodities (gems, materials, dyes, pages, recipes, and other non-unique items)
  • Transfer Fee (when sending proceeds to PayPal or other authorized payment-service provider): 15% of amount being transferred

So now some people will be turning Diablo 3 into a job. Make high level characters, loot whore, sell, lather rinse repeat. Though there is a 15% fee to withdraw to PayPal so hopefully that will take out some of the incentive for mass commercial enterprises to get involved.

Blizzard's AH guide

Actually really interesting stuff here. Really good move on Blizzard's part to delay the start of the RMAH until people can progress a bit and get some gear worth selling, and to have already sold stuff on the Gold AH so we can get a good barometer for what's worth what.

No word on the oft-cited "free auctions" for the RMAH, though. Hmm.

Why is there a fee for gold auction house?

Just a general way to siphon gold out of the economy? The AH in WoW did something similar, albeit for a fraction of what the fee is here.

So 30% of the full price in order to cash out Edit: Commodities? That seems a bit highway robbery-ish to me. It's easily high enough to the point that people will sell items on third party sites just to avoid it.

Why is there a fee for gold auction house?

To incentivize people to use the RMAH where Blizzard gets a cut, I'd imagine.

Who is going to sell good gear on the gold auction house when they know the RMAH is coming?

I'm also worried about the lack of "free auctions". A dollar to list something that may or may not sell? How can Blizzard lose?

As to this part, the transaction fee sounds like it's taken when it sells, as opposed to the transfer fee, which is taken when you cash out.

Edit: Now that I'm thinking of it, if that's the case, is there a fee assessed at all to list? Maybe not.

Fair enough. I have to amend my other quote too; 30% to cash out commodities not Armor/Weapons/Etc. Still terrible, but better than 30% across everything.

I'm guessing the other 15% to cash out to paypal on gear might have been partially paypal's fault. They probably want their cut too.

If they mean $1 flat fee no matter what the cost of the item is, it's much lower than I would have suspected. Except for commodities of course, with the 15% fee.

If I can sell an item for $101, minus 15% to get that money into my paypal account, that isn't horrible. Say I sold armor for $101, and they took $1 off the top. 15% later, and I've got $75$85 bucks in my paypal account that wasn't there before. Not too shabby, though obviously getting anything worth $100 is going to be the rub.

Holy shit. That 15% transfer fee is insane.

How much does Paypal charge when you sell something on Ebay? 15% sounds pretty high, but no where near as high as the 30% it costs to turn a commodity into cash.

Holy shit. That 15% transfer fee is insane.

it's also why if I ever use the RMAH I'll probably keep it all in the Blizzard ecosystem. Put it toward Heart of the Swarm or something.

$85, not $75. But yeah, it definitely doesn't sound like it's $1 to list, but $1 if it sells.

I take full responsibility for that derp, and have made the change. Stupid dog woke me after five hours of sleep lol.

There is no listing fee - only transaction and transfer fees (which are only applicable on a successful auction)

So we're sure it's a $1 fee if your item sells?

Yes - or the official Blizzard AH site is lying to us...

So there will be no items in the auction house less than $1. What is the lowest possible profit people are willing to make? Sell an item for $2, and collect...what... 85 cents after the 15% fee and the $1 fee? Or is the 15% taken before the $1 fee for even less profit?

The RMAH won't have any items less than some full games on the App Store :p

Found this about Paypal's ebay fees:

"PayPal fees mainly apply to sellers, who pay a 2.9% transaction fee on the total sale amount plus a $0.30 fee per transaction"

Sooo.....we're being hammered for an additional 12.1%

Unless you want to cash out a commodity, in which case you're getting dinged for 27.1% over what you'd pay in fees at Ebay.

it seems like the way the fee structure is designed is for the commodities (gems, dyes, gold, etc) to be really low priced, possibly less than $1, so the 15% is more palatable. Basically the fee structure makes it so that commodities don't make sense to sell for more than $15, IMO.

Aah, so the $1 fee doesn't apply to commodities?

You're still getting 15% taken, and then 15% more to cash out though. They're really hammering commodities sellers if I'm understanding this correctly.

My guess is that the maximum efficiency route will be selling beginning/mid level items for slightly lower than average selling price just for guaranteed turnover. You can probably find a bunch of them at higher levels and sell them to people that don't play that much.

Doesn't PayPal take an extra cut to transfer the money from your PayPal account to your checking account? That would be on top of the 15% they take moving the money from D3 to your PayPal account right?

If there's no fee to list, that strategy is pretty sound. The pool of customers gets smaller as you go up in price, to where there's a ton of people that might be willing to spend two dollars or so on an item, but fewer willing to spend $10, and so on until you get up to the high end loot (which rich people will inevitably set the prices for).

I think it depends largely on the type of account you have, I have a personal account and I'm not charged anything to transfer to my checking account.

...The beta access from the WoW annual pass is for the Pandaria WoW expansion, not Diablo 3.

Man, high magic find stuff is going to be worth a lot in this game.

Well, not for everyone. I imagine the most clever way to do this will be that those that have their roles as "support" should wear as much MF as possible when doing content they are comfortable doing, and the "meatshield/tank" characters such as barbarian/monk characters, those that actually take the most hits will need the best combat-oriented gear.

If we think this through, MF splitting also makes sense.
