I pre-purchased Diablo 3 from battle.net.

There's a problem though: when it finishes downloading the client (about 8GB), I try to open the setup, but it gives me an error message. Something about it being damaged. I'm on a Mac (Snow Leopard). Any help?

Oh, can you post an screenshot of the error?

To be fair, D2 brought us Dark Wanderer, Marius, Tal Rasha, Tyrael, Mephisto, and Baal, and that's not including the *really* bit players like Warriv. None of them were all that fleshed out, but they all had personality, albeit all one dimensional personality.

I don't think any of those except Marius had even a one-dimensional personality. What's Mephisto's personality? Hissing? :p

I think Balrog is right, really. Diablo has a lot of the story told through tomes and a few key characters (Cain, Tyrael, Marius).

The enemies don't really have any personality at all, they're simply evil things you have to kill. Diablo speaks a single line when he spawns. Mephisto speaks briefly in the cutscene where Marius is watching them. Baal has more lines than either of them given his cutscene with Marius, cutscene for Act V, and actual dialog during his fight.

Whether or not this was because of technical/financial limitations of the time or intentional will be revealed with this game. Azmodan seemed to talk plenty from what we have seen, though.

Much like the majority of the characters and lore for wow you have to look outside the game to get a hold of it. There is actually a surprisingly in depth story behind everything in d2 including characters and monsters such as mephisto and the like. I mean hell there's even an entire book on bartuc the bloody who is only briefly seen as one of the minions before you fight baal.

Sadly I have no interest in reading outside novels for game lore but I'm sure there's a ton there. Even so, the player character should have seemingly no knowledge of novel information unless it's encountered in the game, leaving his/her relationship to the bosses/characters rather shallow.

Whether or not that's true in Diablo 3 remains to be seen.

Even just from the beta I can tell they are approaching story in a far more in depth way. The voiced quest givers and npcs, The interaction between mercenary and character and just the amount of actual text in the portion of the game shown in the beta all lead me to believe the storytelling will be brought up to modern standards.

May not need as many books to get the story / lore anymore which would be nice.

The amount of lore and story even in the Beta is well beyond D1 and D2 I agree.

I like the fact that most of the lore is optional, but it is fleshed out and there if you want to explore every nook and cranny for scrolls and books and such.

Don't get me wrong guys, I really like how Diablo 1/2's story was handled. It obviously needs to be brought to modern standards somewhat, but I really like finding tomes and things in dungeons that tell portions of the story, rather than always having a character bark it at me. The real improvement so far with D3 is that you can listen to it while continuing to play, which is awesome.

Yeah I love this. Incidentally, in the beta how many diary entries did Leoric have? I only ever found two, but it seemed like there was probably more. They didn't spawn as often as the other ones.

Oh nuts. I only ever found one, and I maxed out those dungeons each time. The one where he talks about moving to Tristram.

Randomly generated loot I can applaud, but lore books should not be the victims of happenstance.

On my third playthrough I found a dead character from D2 with a diary on him. He hadn't been spawned in my previous games.

I only ever found two, but it seemed like no matter what you found it always went in order, so the first one you find is always Lachdanan's Diary 1, and so on.

I had one set of dropped books go up to 5, think it was leoric but I could be recalling the name wrong. There were quite a few sets I ended up with.

Hmm, that makes sense then, because the books were unique & assigned to your character. I still think in terms of Diablo2 where a pedestal had a universal book that was view-able to all players.

Also, withdrawals are hitting hard. I still have Diablo2 installed so I made a Sorc , got to the Den of Evil and saw rare body armor dropped, so I went to pick it up, but someone else got to it first. Man it's hard going back to old system mechanics :( or maybe i'm getting old

I have a question regarding playing with friends higher level than you. Does it matter? Will it ruin the game if I'm level 30 playing with a level 10 friend? Any advice on getting around that?

That's probably Lachdanan. The guy who killed Leoric. He was actually an NPC in Diablo 1, while we're talking about the previous games and the fact that they told some stories. Though I never saw him because I literally never played D1 SP much past the butcher. All about the MP.

I really wish Torchlight 2 had come out. TL1 isn't cutting it and neither is PoE.

Me too. I'm sure TL2 will do great and I'm still getting it day 1 but damn if a month ago wasn't a great time to release. PoE just looks terrible for some reason, though I guess I should try it before judging it.

You would have played quite a bit of the SP to see Lachdanan... I think he was on level 14 or so.

Admittedly I don't really remember much of diablo 1 details wise, Ive never actually played it on pc and only played the ps1 version with my cousin quite some time ago. I remember the butcher and some of the late game stuff and that it all took place in the one town but that's about it.

lol, I reinstalled, got to act 2 with a sorc, planning to go meteorb when I get higher level.

I think there were only two in the beta. It's kind of apparent that there will be more though, especially with (minor spoiler)
Leroric's Manor being an area in the game sometime in Act 1 after finishing up the Cathedral.

This may have already been discussed but I've been avoiding the thread to help get it off my mind because the wait is tough. Anyway, my friend brought up how the open beta was very laggy in the single player. I figured it was because this is a stress test but now I'm concerned it will be like that when the game is out. I rarely play online games because my connection is bad. In TF2, for example, the ping is so high during the day that it's unplayable and I have to wait until late at night or early in the morning. Since Diablo 3 is always online will I have that problem, or is it like the DRM in other games (Ubisoft)?

The stress test is not a good indicator. What I would do is, wait for the game to come out, then ask. Or, perhaps someone who was in the regular beta can give you a better indication.

The amount of data streaming to you in a single player only game is not that much; the loot generation, the monster AI, and the monster and PC locations are the main things, and they're not that much data. That's just theoretical though.

We should make a sub-community of gaffers playing HC mode.
We are going to need as much as support as possible between us. Also we can arrange some team building and make characters builds that play great together: like a tank barb, dps wiz/dh and support monk

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
I would gladly join that HC group! Not gonna be going HC first though.

I will probably play through normal first and possibly nightmare before making the jump to HC. I would be down for HC trading though, for sure.

I'm sure that many people are going to make the switch 6 months from now or so, therefore making it way easier to find a bigger player base, but my idea was more oriented to some of us who plan to make the switch as soon as we hit lvl 10 on normal.

Since we won't have a clan besides us to support us (and the player, item and level pool will be so low) I thought it would be nice if we can organize us to assist eachother finishing difficult quests (think ancients), sharing items that we don't need and so forth.

that will make us progress faster and avoid spending 30min looking for a decent game.

I can't stop looking at Diablo stuff online. I tried playing Path of Exile, Torchlight, even Titan Quest... no luck. I need DIABLO 3.

Yeah, I think I'll wait for feedback on the full game before I get it. I'd hate to be limited to only playing late at night, but then again at least I'd be playing, haha.

Amen.

After watching the Kripparian/Athene video it will be pretty awesome to see how those guys fare come launch. I really wanted to go all in as well, but my wife sprung my mother in law's retirement party on me. Guess which day... May 15th! Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.....

So play at 2 am central until roughly noon when I have to drive 2 hours for a 2-3 hour party then turn around and drive back for 2 hours. Damn, I really thought I was going to have some serious unadulterated Diablo 3 time come the 15th.

Playing torchlight right now but doesn't feel the same, its the atmosphere/graphics of the game + single player that's kind of throwing me off. It certainly has the game mechanics in place.

Is it possible to do a witch doctor based around summons? I'm looking to do a summoner like the necromancer was, since there are no shapeshifters in d3.

I don't think anyone can say for sure yet, but the claim is that a bigger diversity of builds should be viable so I assume that means a summoner build should be.

I hope they bring back the druid for the expansion. I'm gonna miss it.

I'll mostly be playing from 8-11 EST after the kids go to bed, sometimes later and maybe an extra hour here and there on weekends.

I would suggest trying the Median XL mod for Diablo 2 to those waiting for D3. It continues to be updated to the day and overhauls so much of the original game. This is really your last chance to put some time into it since it would be unlikely players revisit post-D3.

Did anyone watch the entire Kripparian/Athene video? I'd love to know why they think DH's will have Inferno viability trouble, but I can't sit through an hour of their talking to find out.

They think the stun duration will be so low in Inferno that it will cripple the DH's mechanics.
