Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue might be headed to XBLA/PSN

Shenmue with Japanese voices please! I've been meaning to replay it, this would push me to do it. Skies is amazing, but I don't feel the need to replay it again.

I want the option of English voices, the cheesyness of the English dub ads to the comedy and tardness of Ryo

So I guess you didn't get the bug where when you took a slightly different (but perfectly appropriate) forklift route than what the devs coded for you to take you'd never trigger the appropriate scripted event and instead get an infinite loop of the same "day" with no indication of what's going on or what you're supposed to do differently.

Wow, i completed Shenmue several times, but never run into it.
Imma google that now, sounds bad.

can't imagine ren without his japanese voice. it must have sucked to play this on xbox.

I own both, and the Xbox Ren is fucking atrocious. He stood out as ok most times, but he sounded way too much like FukuSan for my liking. In the Japanese one he just sounded like a total bad ass.

I am hardcore for Shenmue - I own both games for the Dreamcast and Shenmue II for the Xbox. It is without doubt one of the greatest franchises in video game history and I am there day one for these HD remasters. But just a couple of things...

- Both games need platinums. They are huge in scope and there is a ton of shit to do in them. I know it's trivial in some eyes, but to me 12 or 14 trophies for a Shenmue game is just wrong.

- Include both dubs, with the Japanese one being the default option. You need that Western dub in there too for good ol' cheesy nostalgia. The Shenmue experience is incomplete without Tom's cod-Jamaican accent to laugh at.

Oh, that was in the DC version... as DLC.

You mean Tuna Cutlass and Swirlmerang? Also in the DC version. Also DLC.

No. He's talking about the Sky Fang, the Golden Hamachou ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTTY353rh-k), & a brand new boss battle ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk1SP-jjmzI ),

A new character for the team too:

She's not a new team member. She's a new boss. You fight her 3 times. She levels up as you do. The first fight is the most difficult. Fighting her reveals back-story for Vyse and how he got his scar.

There are also new bounty boss battles. I think six or seven new bosses to fight that level up as you do.

Shenmue is important because of its ambition and attention to detail.

It's easy to pick apart if you want to, but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. It provided an experience like nothing else, and it was that experience that drew you into the game and made you care about the story.

It had atmosphere by the bucketload, and that was because of many different things coming together brilliantly.

loved his casually pissy attitude. can't wait to jump back in.....or see him a new generation version, hnnnnng!

Very true. I don't think we've had a game like it since, though I would love for someone to try.

How about no trophies/achievements at all?

We all know it's gonna be something like 'collect all figurines' 'play through space harrier 5000 times'. Is that really what people want/need?

In my opinion, it was the first game to create a believable and therefore immersive game world. Well, maybe except for the forklift trucks... and duck race... and speaking Japanese in China.
Nearly everything you could see or reach was interactive. Haven't seen a game since that did that on the same scale. Yakuza has a quite detailed world, but very little of that is interactive.

The best thing about Shenmue was its slightly mythical feel -- its sense of magic realism. I imagine that any future Shenmue-like would be overly stylish/snazzy/gritty/dark/cool and wouldn't have the same appeal.

There are way too many 'best things' to list about Shenmue. <3

Now everyone will get to see how bad both of them are!

Shenmue really is just a huge mess of a game.

All around clunky controls, some very severe technical problems, impressive atmosphere, a well realized interactive world, some of the worst voice acting in existence (English VA of course), and arcade games.

Somehow this strange mishmash of flaws and strengths gave me a couple of games I still look on fondly.

who said these games are arcade.

they could do games on demand like resident evil 4 and code

I doubt they'd be any worse than the last couple of Yakuza's, certainly not as bad as Yakuza 3. Sega seem to have learnt not to go completely bullshit with their trophies.

Why on earth would you not want trophies/achievements though? Like it or not but they're only going to encourage more sales, which as far as I'm aware would only be a good thing. Platinums even more so.

I guess, cuz getting Shenmue down to XBLA's 2GB limit might be tight fit. Especially Shenmue 2 which was like 4GB across 4 discs. Guess they could just recompress the audio or something.

I've always said that dev team was trying to do 6 years of game design evolution, early, by themselves, and no idea how to pay for it.

I never understood the complaints about the encounter rate in SoA. It was the stupid cinematics for special attacks and load times that drug the combat down.

You realize you could skip the cinematics, right? I don't know what it was on DC, but on Gamecube you just press Z or Start or something and it'll skip right to the damage.

Won't encourage me to fully flesh out the game.

I get that and when done right it can actually add to the experience, but most of the times they're just annoying (like this 'kill 500 people with a certain weapon' shit) and unimaginative.

It feels kinda odd discussing this when we don't even know if the rumors are true..

I both love and am disturbed by the fact that my Wii is a Nintendo 64 machine and that my PS3 might soon become a Dreamcast machine.

Or they could maybe release the games in a truly episodic way (for lower prices):

- Shenmue Chapter 1: Yokosuka (maybe shortened)
- Shenmue Chapter 2: Hong Kong
- Shenmue Chapter 3: Kowloon
- Shenmue Chapter 4: Guilin and beyond.

Then they could extend a little the Guilin part and give it a (reworked) ending there, or if they find success they might release more chapters as in the original plan.

For a (dreamy) taste of how Shenmue HD could look like, the user Master Kyodai at Shenmuedojo has been doing 1080p renders of scenes from both Shenmues. The IQ is unrealistic to achieve on current consoles, because he extracts the models (from a Dreamcast emulator) and renders the scene using PC software, but the results are spectacular:

Shenmue needs good achievements/trophies to lure the casuals in. Also the players who play only for achievements.

Every fan of Shenmue BETTER buy these, seriously. This is our one possible (??) chance to make Shenmue 3 a reality. Its pretty clear to me that good sales here will result in 3 down the road.

I feel bad for never giving a chance to Sky of arcadia. From what I remember I played for an hour or something like that, and was bored.

Sorry 'bout the bump, but what's the likelyhood here? For Shenmue I mean... I was thinking of giving it another spin on my DC but if it's comin for xbla I don't mind waiting... Who knows, maybe they'll even throw in the original japanese voice acting instead of the terrible english dub.

You're a terrible person and you should feel bad for bumping this.

Anyway, regading if they are going to port Skies of Arcadia Legends or vanilla... I'm leaning on to them porting Legends because in the vanilla version, it makes use of the DC's VMU when searching for treasures and events, and obviously PS3 and 360 doen't have a VMU.
