Skies of Arcadia and Shenmue might be headed to XBLA/PSN

Hmmm, decisions, decisions... I was just about to play through Shenmue (for about the twentieth time) on my Dreamcast, but now I'm thinking about holding off. But then again, these versions probably won't come out till at least next year.

"Level" on gametrailers, has a piece on the
, from Shenmue.
Fucking epic stuff it was, let me tell you.
It must be super cluncky to play now, though.

I'll rebuy Skies if they put it on Steam (like they've been doing with the rest of these rereleases). I don't think you could pay me to slog through Shenmue again though.

Sign me up for jpn and USA copiea on psn if shenmue comes out.

I hope passport disc stuff is included as well. I want to be top 10 in the state for forklift racing and 70 battlw again.

It's not the best, but these are excellent reasons. Don't forget the characters are simply charming and fun to see grow together.

Would love to see what they could do with a sequel with todays consoles.

This. The emotions on their faces were the best and the writing/dialog was great for it's time. Heck it still is. The Characters were some of the best in a JRPG.

I'm surprised so many people on GAF of all people like SOA which was pure tripe. Maybe I was tool old when I played it.

The random battles are not the problem. It never was, to focus on the random battle rate would be silly. The game was pure-ass water due to its cringe worthy, embarrassing , insipid juvenile story and the cast of characters that jumped straight of an animu-fruity loops box. Horrible vomit inducing trash, why does Sega keep regurgitating this bile?

I now know why, because people actually accept this anime trope trash.

Indeed; I agree with you.

After reading a few of your posts i wonder if you're a troll, or if you just have anger issues.. Jesus, chill out man.

Again, saying Shenmue is like Yakuza is misleading because the two series play nothing like one another. Yakuza's fighting system is far more simplistic, and combat is a much bigger gameplay focus. Shenmue is largely about talking to people, observing the world and the little details in it, watching people go about their daily routines, stuff like that. Hours can go by without any combat. In contrast, in Yakuza there aren't really any details to notice. You just wander around the crowded-but-barren city streets (none of the NPCs are interesting or differentiated from one another) being dragged into random battles. In Shenmue, the world exists to be explored and appreciated, whereas in Yakuza there's almost no real "exploration." Outside of its mostly skin-deep "open world" trappings, the game world is much more utilitarian, existing mainly to shuttle you from one plot point to another, tossing some items, experience points, and fetch quests at you along the way. (And don't get me wrong. I LOVE Yakuza.)

Actually they are ..it's just that kamurocho is way bigger and has more people but there are clearly some Npcs that are unique and only appears at certain times .... You can't give 50 Npc unique features in a huge city like Kamurocho BUT you can do it in a small portion of a town like in shenmue...

They are different games of course but both have a fairly unique attention to detail.

The story in Skies of Arcadia is only bad if you're one of those weirdos who thinks the typical teenage love story melodrama crap actually makes a good story. In which case, you have horrible taste.

Skies of Arcadia's story is light and fun, like it's trying to be.

Exactly, and it was a breath of fresh air when it released, and still is original and different in 2012.

I'm getting nightmares at the thought of a new generation of shenmue fans. *shivers*

I wouldn't know.
Shenmue is one of my favorite games ever, but it has not aged gracefully, so as far as getting new people in? I don't know about that.

If these two comes with the same amount of love JSR is getting, it'll finally be time to retire my nearly dead dreamcast for good.

It's a long-shot, but PS3/Vita transfarring for Skies would be amazing.

I'd also really like Skies to have a full Platinum trophy set on PS3. There's so much cool stuff to do in that game, and I'd like to have a big list of things to accomplish, since it's one of my favorite RPGs.

more like:

Which I'll gladly do again :D

If it was the Skies Gamecube version, I would be so grateful, but it's probably just the DC port (not that that would be too shabby at all).
Apparently the music quality on the DC version is much better (I only played the GC version), so it's probably the superior version.

Crap, guess it's time to ebay my GC copy of SoA which I never got around to playing... I loved this game on DC and immediately snatched up the Legends version back with GC was still the new hotness... and then never got around to playing it.

I will probably also buy it in XBLA, and then never get around to playing that one, either :D

when i think about skies, the first things that come to mind are the outcome of that pirate's treasure quest and the first 5 seconds of the battle theme. oh and that dancer.

haven't played it since it came out on DC.

Ooh, I know this one!
"FIRE CONSUME MY ENEMY! Lambda Burst!"

Did you know, at least in Legends, that you can skip your own S.Move animations by pressing Start? The game has the best battle quotes, though. So cheesy.

Skies of Arcadia shows that there are two ways to deal with cliches, really. You can do what most do and try to avoid them, step around them, subvert them to appear original and fresh. And then there's what Skies does: Embrace them. No fear, no wavering, just a head on collision with as many cliches as it can find, and look awesome while doing it. Which fits the characters of the game so well.

So, if there's a re-release, can I suggest this as a subtitle for the RTTP thread?

"Pirates of old! Defend our cause!"

Seems kind of fitting now.

So excited for this. (Assuming it's true.) JSR, Shenmue AND SoA? Too good to be true.

Unlike the other two mentioned games, I never managed to really sit down an get very far in Skies of Arcadia, (didn't own a copy) but it seemed like a very cute, charming, and lighthearted adventure story. I'm just not convinced it deserves the hate it's getting in this thread.

Ideally they would port the Gamecube version of the game but include the Dreamcast music.

The GameCube version had texture and other rendering issues, too, but they weren't as obvious as the music problems.

The added content in the GC version isn't worth all of those problems, though, so I'd prefer that they just stick with the DC version, since I don't expect much more than a basic port.

If anyone is the King of the Trollercoaster, it's gotta be Sega. Every time I seem to almost forget about Shenmue, Sega always reignites that flame. I just want to forget it all. Please Sega do not tempt me back to Yokosuka....

Pretty much this. I'll believe it when it's confirmed and I see it lol :(

It doesn't. It's a fantastic game.

MOONS GIVE ME STRENGTH. This worked on the Dreamcast too.
Never had one, so I didn't know. What did Legends add, anyway? Other than Piastol?

Now just to be obnoxiously optimistic for a second... There's another thread saying that Shenmue HD exists, but hasn't been released until Sega knew what to do with the franchise. Couple that with this thread saying Shenmue is getting a PSN/XBLA release and you get... A Shemue sequel? Maybe, maybe not. But also, what if Skies of Arcadia is Skies of Arcadia HD, released because Sega also has plans for that franchise? Vyse, Aika, and Fina did cameo in Valkyria Chronicles, and were pretty well received there, too. Sega testing the waters? A Skies of Arcadia HD with Valkyra's engine would be so awesome.

An HD port of Shenmue is indeed heading to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network, and development on the title has been “finished for well over a year”, according to an industry source speaking to GamerZines.

Our source, who wishes to remain anonymous but does have ties to SEGA, told us that “Shenmue HD is real [and has been] finished for well over a year.

“As is Shenmue II HD”.

According to our insider, SEGA chose to sit on their release until it had a clearer picture of the future for the Shenmue franchise, namely, whether or not Shenmue III would ever see the light of day.

Legends has less random battles , black pirates , some new maps discoveries, the extra story and many tweak to some magics properties ( such as the revive magic that had a high chance of failing in the dreamcast version )

And many more little touches here and there ... You have a slightly less quality music and the loss of pinta quest too

What.

Why would you do that? Then again, I used items almost exclusively to revive. Can't revive though Delta Shield. And the items are cheap. That and when Fina gets her final S.Move, you just keep a reserve of points. Anyone die or everyone in bad enough condition for the boss music to change, fire off Lunar Light. It's not often a healing move is my favorite move in a game, but Lunar Light is just so very, very overpowered for a healing move. (Revives from KO, heals fully, cures all status problems, goes first.) And if Riselem had a chance to fail in the DC version, it just makes Lunar Light that much more awesome.

It will be weird to play Skies of Arcadia without having the motor in the optical drive whirring warning you that a battle is about to start. Maybe they'll add that as DLC.
