Aside from the weekly thread it has been killing me that I can't talk about my growing Comic Collection more!!! So here I go...

My collection and thoughts on the books so far:

Civil War 1&2: Man what can I say 1 is just spectacular and 2 is great for setting up 3 which they say will be the first major battle. I hope Cap and crew crack some skulls!!!! Pull-list.

Wolverine 42 & 43: It seems I jumped in at the right time. I love the art and I love the way Wolvie acts in this one. This is part of my pull-list.

CivilWar: Frontlines 1&2: Good book get that backstory to civil pretty well if you ask me.Fireball's story really has me on my seat. I wanna know what happens to him. Pull-list

Captain America 18 & 19: Man flat out I love Captain America. This is so great from art to story. Pull-list (I LOVE CAP)

Uncanny X-men 475: New team so now was a good time to jump on and I like the art and the Chars. so I'm fully on board. Pull-list

X-men 186 & 187: Bought just because when I first bought my comics I wanted an X-Book so this was it. Didn't really get the story cuz it was at its end. But the next issue they reorganize the team. (Cable's on it I hear) Pull-list

Wolverine Origin 1-3: I like the story but the art looks like a saturday morning cartoon. But Ill continue on with the story. Pull-list

The Incredible Hulk-Planet Hulk 92-96: Brilliant. Period. Go buy this series. I thought I would never buy his books but damn. Pull-list

Star Wars: Legacy 1: I like StarWars so I grabbed this on impulse and was quite entertained with it. Good Art too. Pull-list

I know I know I need some DC but I just can't get into it. But I'll probably pick up some Batman on Wednesday. Talk about Comics!!!!!

Its about comics in general.

I really want to know whats good besides my Marvel stuff. And what Tpb I should look into.

Oh my....

Obviously, I love the original/early Spawn yarns. Pretty much anything by Frank Miller or Alan Moore, some Micheal Bendis thrown in, that's my advice.

TBP's to pick up:

Spawn: Collected Volume 1 (and, if you like that...)
Spawn: Collected Volume 2

The Dark Knight Returns (Miller)

Batman Year One (Miller)

Watchmen --> YOU MUST READ THIS. THE GREATEST SERIES OF OUR TIME. (Moore)

V for Vendetta (Moore)

And I'd suggest getting into more DC stuff, besides the obvious Batman/Superman (which you should look into). You seem to have Marvel covered already.

"WANTED - GRAPHIC NOVEL

Super-villains as you've never seen them before are brought to you by writer Mark Millar and artist J.G. Jones!"

Its kind of like The Watchmen series, but focusing on villians instead - brilliant art, a terrific story and concept and bloody, gory action in spades.

And Bone: One Volume Edition

But I've since read they're releasing a full-colour Bone one day so I'll probably have to repurchase.

Yesterday I finally got around to picking up the Hardcover Premiere Edition of The New Avengers: Breakout. It hasn't blown me away, but I've only finished the the first three issues. Although I have to admit that
Sentry flying into space and ripping Carnage apart was awesome

I'm still reading the the first hardcover ultimate edition of Invincible. I'm really diggin that one so far, but I'm afraid of reading thruogh it too quickly. I know the Volume 2 hardcover only came out last month, so we wont be seeing another until at least this time next year.

These days I just can't stand monthly comics, so I only buy the trades. Yeah, the wait for stuff can really be annoying. But I prefer it over the month to month waits, and dealing with pages and pages of ads. Of course I'm like a year behind all the going ons of the Marvel and DC universes. The House of M trades just started coming out, and we still have to wait awhile for Infinite Crisis. :lol

I consider myself more of a DC fan, being that Batman is my favorite character...with Supes coming in second. But recently I've also been dragged into the Marvel world. The two Astonishing X-Men trades were just so freakin' awesome, I think thats what began my recent Marvel lovefest. And even though I was taking a gamble by buying the Secret War hardcover without ever having read it, it was worth the money and time. Great art, and I just loved the concept.

Some of my favorite DC trades are:

DC: The New Frontier Vol 1 & 2

1401203507.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

Basically this is about retro 1950s versions of the DC universe, but with modern depth and characterization.

Kingdom Come
1563893304.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.gif

Basically the story of young against old. The well aged DC universe has to deal with a new generation of super heroes who...well they just don't give a damn about anything except fighting. Plus you got Alex Ross on art, can't beat that.

Batman Year One & Dark Knight Returns
1401206905.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg
1563893428.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

How it began and how it ended for Batman. This is Batman.

And I have to agree with master shake, Watchmen is a must have. Even people who don't read comics end up enjoying this one. I told a friend of mine to pick up V and Watchmen before summer vacation, and he fell in love with Watchmen. V is also great, but I've found more people end up enjoying Watchmen a lot more.

The real question is, who wins in a battle of sheer psychotic brilliance? Batman or Rorschach?

And yes, while YO - DKR are the epitomy of Batman yarns, I've always felt DKR took a few too many liberties with the character. Year One is what you should seek out first, Silicon Bean...

Bone is so awesome. I'll prolly get a OV Color Edition if ever released (we bought the first Volume colored when he was at a book signing very close by).

I read Epileptic a couple weeks ago and it amazed me. I was really surprised at how visually creative it was, I guess you don't expect that from a comics memoir, especially a comics memoir about a depressing subject (although this book is way more than 'a comic about the author's sick brother', obviously). Anyway, it's one of the best things I can remember reading recently. So, very highly recommended or whatever!

I read the new Scott Pilgrim too and thought it was good. What a boring opinion. Everybody likes that book. I hate it when we talk about comics. Just mark me down as liking whatever everybody else likes. (Except for huge confusing superhero epics that I don't understand. I don't comprehend those and therefore are not qualified to like or dislike them.)

You should be a comic salesman because just sold me on this "Wanted" series. I read up on it a bit more on the Top Cow website and the concept is pretty fresh.

The problem is the ending sucks royally. It seemed very rushed and just out of no where. Millar had a great story, but awful ending.

Wanted is trash; spineless Eminem wannabe gets his revenge power fantasy wish fulfilled after taking his deadbeat dad's place as the world's greatest killer, in a world where supervillains run the show after their secret war against the heroes ended in victory. Utterly despicable.

Buddy I am right there with you on the Civil War issues! I haven't read comics in YEARS. I think the last one I ever bought was like Spawn #2 back in the 90s. I became more of a Marvel fan from the Capcom fighting games and movies, and decided I liked the idea of the Civil War story so I picked up 1 + 2. I was so into it, that I ran out and got the two Wolverine CW issues, The Amazing Spiderman CW issue, and the Captain America CW issue. I'm ****in hooked! I'm currently tracking down any and all issues that are part of the CW story.

Also, this Tuesday I'm picking up the Halo graphic novel. Can't wait for that! :)

Can I complain about what a shitty story Infinite Crisis was? Because it sucked. All that hype and build up and the only real result is that Didio and Co. managed to take a big, steaming, ripe shit all over CoIE.

you sir, are soulless... :p

Infinite Crisis is probably the best x-over series SINCE CoIE. Not just for what the mini was (which was a well written book with gobs of fan service), but for what it setup in the DCU. IMHO, Batman and Superman are seeing some of the best stories in their respective series that they have seen in years... no, decades. Was IC a requirement to see those stories? That's debatable. You could say no, but on the other hand over the past 20 years Batman has been dark, and superman has been complicated. wonder woman has been going down the amazonian path of the punisher (more or less), and Flash, well.. flash has been fairly consistent. My point is that while none of these things were bad, going back to "a hero is a hero" is actually REFRESHING in the fact of the past 20 years. And they transitioned it more than just slapping a "NEW CREATIVE TEAM!!" house ad in the books and shops.

It's funny, but as a collector/reader for over 19 years now, I couldn't disagree with you more on IC. At first I was thinking it was just a result of getting shit like Last Laugh, OWAW, Zero Hour, Armageddon, Total Eclipse, Millenium, Invasion, etc over the last 20 years and wondering where CoIE and the multiple earth x-overs went.. GL/GA, World's Finest, etc.. awesome crossover events. but after rereading it for my third time.. IC just kicks ass all over the place. And OYL has "almost" linewide been an editorial success as well.

IMHO of course.

Reading comics for a "result" is always a bad idea.

I enjoyed IC, but when I look at it from any kind of distance, it was a pretty bad story. Character motivations make little sense, events happen at random, and plot holes a-plenty.

Oh, I am liking Civil War too. I am generally more DC than Marvel, but I read both, and Civil War is pretty good. I like Millar, usually.

I am also liking 52, but it needs a little pickup right now.

qfmft. i read year one and dark knight returns after watchmen, and i was sorely disappointed. watchmen is just so damn textured, and affecting. the best comic i've ever read.

also check out "maus" by spiegelman for a retelling of an auschwitz survivor's experiences in the holocaust. really unorthodox subject matter to be taken on in comic form.

hmm.. I don't agree at all. Character motivations were that the wrong earth survived and things were down down a bad path, and that Alexander was unable to avoid his destiny. For me, everything played out in a way that made sense and seemed logical. Furthermore, the path that it all took seemed very natural. Not like all of the sudden "some thing happened" that the heroes had to avert, but that this had been building over years and decades of our time.

I agree that reading a series waiting for that "big change/surprise" to hit is kind of a bad way to approach things. Many of the greatest stories of all time are just excellent narratives with no shock/twist surprise in store for the reader. As I said, for the the greatest "twist" of IC was OYL where apparently many of the heroes were "hey, we have to really change things for the better". i love the lightening up of batman, the streamlining of superman, the stuff that is especially going on over in teen titans. for me that was the payoff of IC, and that is where Didio and Co succeeded.

Maus may be the best graphic novel ever. And I'm not just saying that becuase of the subject matter-- in fact, it's better than any other Holocaust story or film I can think of.

Borge: Alex Luthor is who I was thinking of, his motivation made no sense to me. Destiny-schmestiny. Superboy's motivation was OK, if a little forced. Superman-2 was just plain off.

I also believed that all of their motivations came from somewhere along the lines of "well, we lost our world and everything we had.. sure it was for the greater good and all, but look at what these chumps are doing with what was given to them at our expense". Take even the most noble person, knowingly and visibly shit on their memory and everything they stood for, and see how "ok" with it they'll remain and for how long. Now to mention Superman-2 KNEW lois was dying and knew the only way to save the woman he loved was to "Fix" earth. So fix a broken earth to save the woman you love.

If you're a pure Marvel reader, Daredevil has been insanely good.

If you want to get started with DC, last week's Detective Comics was a great jumping-on point. Also, Morrison and Kubert begin their run on Batman later this month. That's also going to be a great jumping on point.

I'm really hooked on Civil War as well. Read the two main books and almost all the crossovers, and am loving it all. Can't wait to see the real fighting begin, and Spider-man switch sides (you can tell it's going to happen).

What's the largest forum on the internet for comics?

If you are in it just for stories then go with TPB or Graphic Novels. They look good on shelves, hold up good and make for better reading. Some things from my collection, both a mix of recent and old and comics and TPB/Graphic novels but just about everything is coming out in trades nowadays.

Batman

Hush vol. 1 and 2
Year One
Killing Joke
Long Halloween
Dark Knigh Returns 1 and 2 (honestly, you can skip 2 though)
Knightfall

Superman

Death and Rebirth
Red Son

DC

Kingdom Come (everyone should have this)
Infinite Crisis
Mythology (great artbook)

Marvel

Daredevil: Guardian Devil (TPB collecting kevin smiths writing on the comic. Awesome story)
Thanos Quest 1 and 2
Infinity Gauntlet
Atlantis Attacks
Secret Wars
Marvel Zombies

X-men

Days of Future Past
anything Claremont
Age of Apocalypse
X-cutioners Song (I liked it, plus it helps clear up the whole Cable thing a bit)
X-Factor (I liked pretty much the whole early series and sets up some great characters)

If you happen to be a Transformers fan Dreamwave recent run was pretty awesome with the comics. They have a couple Generation 1 TPB and also try and pick up the War Within comics, they were pretty bad ass.

actually both of the big guys at DC start over this month. Detective has two months of Paul Dini single issue stories (first one was awesome). Batman is starting with Morrison. And over in Superman and Action, Kurt Busiek picks things up (even though he was on Up Up and Away). Wonder Woman had a fairly enjoyable first issue (even though Heinberg is only going to do the first 5 issues :(). and then there is the flash.............. well, here's to hoping for a better second issue on that title.

Yes, the first issue of Flash sucked monkey balls. Writers rarely get better overnight, so I'm not holding out much hope for this run.

Dammit. Flash hasn't any been good since Johns left last year.

Flash is a dead concept, at least for right now. Scaling down the speed is a dumb idea. Make a *new* book if you want to write about a character who can only go the speed of sound.

Anybody read the new Atom? I want to like it, but I doubt I will.

Totally agree on the Flash first issue. It was textbook how not to write a first issue.

Read the Atom due to Simone and really enjoyed it. I thought I would hate it, but the atmosphere in Ivy Town pulled me in. Not a big Byrne fan anymore, but it worked for me.

To the OP - find a set of Manhunter by DC. I just recently grabbed a full run and regret not buying it this whole time. Andreyko can write anything at DC at this point. He characters are more real than anyone's in superhero comics, save for maybe Jessica Jones at Marvel.

I'll chime in to agree with the Flash hate... WTF.... personally I didn't think Wonder Woman was much better... just because I could follow the story in WW better didn't make it a better book IMO.

yes Savage Dragon is still around (current longest running independent book behind only spawn). it is still a great book though it's release scehdule is very sporadic thanks to Larsen having a rather executive role at Image for the past 2 years or so.

I was miffed at Wonder Woman at the start simply because I wasn't expecting Donna (didn't realize that Diana wouldn't be WW), the writing wasn't quite up to Young Avengers, and the last page was a big WTF?? but upon reading it a second time, it is much better. Much of what I have been talking about in this thread (DC heroes going back to roots) was prevalant in the book and the last page could open up for some fun. About the only remaining issue I have with the book is not a whole lot actually going on.. but it was still a fun talky book nonetheless.

Atom I enjoyed, and Byrne's art was subtle enough that it didn't distract me. much of what I actually don't like about byrne's art is that I don't feel it has migrated to the computer coloring age very well.. I think much of it would look great using a 4 color separation process.. he needs to find out how to marry it to digital coloring better. anywho, atom was good, though not great by today's standards.. but considering today's standards are quite high, that is actually a compliment.

I used to own a copy, but I kinda grew out of comics for a few years. I've only recently got back into the swing of things, but am trying to build up a library of modern classics and TPBs. I'm still not buying new issues or anything...

you're going to pay the price for something mint. the half.com link has a couple of new copies, i think, but they're all over $30. the mycomicshop.com copies are labeled NM--near mint. so no, not new either.

talk to the owner of your local comic shop and see if they can snag you a copy. push comes to shove, keep your eyes open at places like borders around the time a new batman movie/dvd is released. they always reprint the more popular comics around then, and they're much more prevalent.

Do it! I don't know if it started as single release comics but the graphic novel I bought is the complete story. It isnt very long, but the dialogue is so smart and snappy and the art is so crisp that I've read it several times and no doubt I'll read it several more.

You can get a non-1st print new killing joke for cover price typically. It is constantly in print from DC. ask your local cshop for a copy.. or else you can pick it up in the trade.

if you actually want a first print make sure it is the solid green typeface on the cover. any other color is a later print.

I just finished all ten volumes of Gaiman's Sandman.

Some weren't that great (Doll's House was a little too disturbing). I really loved Preludes and Nocturnes, Season of Mists, Brief Lives, and The Kindly Ones (Wow).

Really great series.
