Apologies if this is a stupid question, but how does a 2 game, 1 set match work?

Here's a video I recorded a few moments ago of a 2 game, 1 set match between my Mii and the hidden character,
Dry Bowser
:

http://youtu.be/zZUu_h1YjiU?hd=1

CPU is on expert difficulty. There's still 2 higher difficulty levels I haven't unlocked yet.

But, does that mean that there is no way I can play a 5 sets match (with 6 games minimum in my sets, thx) online ?

Nope. 2 games, 1 set is the max when it comes to online play, whether it's with friends or randoms. For me, I don't consider this a bad thing. Doesn't make the game any less fun. If anything, it lets you play more games in a shorter amount of time.

Hispanicguy, about how long have your online matches lasted? Can you tell if match settings are more configurable when playing with friends?

In terms of length, I would say the matches I've played so far were more or less around 2 minutes. If you look at the 2 videos I posted, they both last around 2 min if you don't count time being spent in the menu. It all depends on how good the players are.

When setting up a match with friends online, you can choose singles or doubles, quick match (first to 7 wins) or extended (2 game, 1 set match). Really simple. You can also choose what court you want to play on.

I'm trying to understand the hate this has gotten. If you compare it to Mario Tennis 64, it more or less offers the same. If we all enjoyed that game, there should be no reason we can't enjoy this one.

You have these single player modes:

Tournament mode. Singles/doubles. You can choose a character (including your mii which you can dress up and increase it's stats). 4 cups to go through then you unlock another 4. Each character you beat tournament mode with gets a medal that shows you did indeed beat tournament mode (not sure if you get another medal or something when beating the other 4 cups). I didn't have any difficulties with tournament mode. I would assume it will be harder in the other 4 cups you unlock but no one should really have trouble.

Exhibition. Play singles/doubles against CPU. Choose from 5 difficulty settings for the CPU. If you go into the Records menu, it will keep track of who you beat and on what difficulty.

Mini Games. Ring Shot, Super Mario Tennis, Galaxy Rally and Ink Showdown. Each mode has different levels of difficulty. For example, in Ring Shot, first they ask you to score 200 points in 1 minute. When you beat that, the next challenge is to score 350 points in 2 minutes. After that, 500 points in 3 minutes. Then the last challenge is score as many points as you can within 3 minutes.

You don't earn any coins during tournament mode. You would have to play exhibition as well as the mini games. IMO, that's a good amount of things to do. With nearly 200 accessories to unlock, if you're a completionist, you have some work to do lol.

If you have friends nearby to play local multiplayer, there's no doubt you'll have a great time.

Online multiplayer (even though it does seem bare) is short and sweet. I had 1 match that was slightly laggy but the next 2 were smooth. When viewing my video of that online match, did you guys notice any lag? Just wondering.

I'm enjoying the game and it gives ME enough things to do. It won't be the same with others. I would suggest if you have a Best Buy near you, go and play the demo they have set up.

Throughout the day, I'll see if I can get more videos of online multiplayer (hoping it does indeed stay smooth) as well as try to unlock costumes for your viewing pleasure.

I understand that but, for me, tennis is better played for long session : it's about domination, resignation, alternance between excellente sequences and some others where you play like sh*t, etc.
I remember furious matches between me and four friends (2vs2) in 5sets whith incredible finishes, absolute despairs and explosions of joy when we would won a match we were losing 2sets 0 30minutes before :)

2 minutes simply don't seem to allow for such dramatic matches and that's a shame... Well, I guess (hope !) there is an option to quickly re-match with the same persons, so a short 2 minutes match could be considered a full set, and so on... :p

Nice overview. Thanks. SOunds like it's plain fun, but I wish the matches were longer.

They should do another ice hockey with online. Mario Hockey anyone?

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Well, I wasn't expecting long, sim-type matches, but I wasn't expecting them to be as short as like a fighting game match, either. That's kind of a bummer that there are no configurable options, even with friends. Such short matches sort of take the skill out of things a bit (chance shots and gyro controls aside, of course), and really aren't tennis-esque at all. I'm not completely against short matches, I just would like to have more choices. I'm still buying it, but that's another negative in my book.

I think I might end up getting this in the end Sunday if only because there is nothing else to really buy and I want to spend money on something (weird I know). Don't need/want any more console (have Xenoblade and Starhawk) or PC games (Tera Online, DS3 (best $5 I've spent in a long time), and The Secret World beta) for a while. "Finished" with my 3DS games but do want something new to play and don't want to spend above $40 and nothing on the eShop grabs me or seems worth buying at the moment.

My concern about the two modes playing against each other still bothers me. Maybe it's balanced.

The big if is if this game has the capability of having DLC. Fire Emblem is already out and that was suppose to be the first Nintendo game to have it. They never yes or not in regard to anything that came after it. A Tennis game might seem to be a good option. More mini games or characters or items. What does everyone think. Possible that DLC might be option?

If there's anyone else that has the game at the moment and has played online, if you see "jeffsotall" that's me.

Just finished another online match and, again, I didn't notice any lag nor could I tell what control style the other person was using.

I have been getting my ass kicked by Bowser Jr in tournament mode for the past 30 minutes lol. If I beat him, I win the cup. Took a break though cause I was getting frustrated, haha.

Speaking of taking a break, the game sometimes recommends that you take one from time to time.

Btw, any videos you guys want me to record? I'm still trying to unlock some costumes.

Video of the customization menu and/or item store would be good.

I'm still baffled that people are arguing that having as many features of a 10+ year old n64 game is a good thing.

Sports games have taken quite a few leaps forward in the past few years.

Video of various menus (Item Shop, changing your outfit and the Records menu):

And here's a video of Super Mario Tennis, level 1-3:

http://youtu.be/pWFZrU3-RC0?hd=1

The leaderboards...from what I see, you only see the person in 1st place and then your record. Don't see a way to view others. I'm hoping this is because the game isn't released yet. I love competing on the leaderboards and not being able to see everyone on there doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the new videos.

Do the instructions or game explain how one should interpret the power, spin and move graphs?

Thanks for the new videos.

Do the instructions or game explain how one should interpret the power, spin and move graphs?

Speaking of instructions, I'm looking through the manual you can read from your 3DS and read a few things:

Taunting
"While waiting for a shot from your opponent, press A to start taunting. If you can finish the taunt, your character will flash red and the strength of your next shot will be slightly increased."

I knew about taunting but didn't know it had that effect. Good to know.

Also, if you're charging up a shot, you can cancel it with L. Also good to know, lol. I was wondering what the hell the L button did.

If you're playing local multiplayer with strangers, there's a friend icon you can both press and you'll become friends with that person.

In terms of online matchmaking, you'll be matched up with people who have a similar rating. "If the connection is lost during a match, your rating will increase or decrease based on your in-game points at the time."

Whenever you see a purple chance circle, press Y and you'll perform a powerful smash.

To answer your question, there is nothing in the manual about the graphs.

Was anyone able to confirm this yet?

I don't know the answer to that. Feel free to add me and see if that feature comes up: 0001-4214-2777.

There's one guy online name "Johnathan" that I've played against a few times and he's the only guy that has given the matches lag.

How the hell do you play a twitch game like tennis with 200ms of lag if you want to play against people from a quarter of the world away? you need to keep this way under 100ms otherwise it will be a nightmare to play online. its not a racing game where momentum and a good lap time is more important, in this game each shot counts and lag will really kill this game online unless you only play against those in your region.

I guess I'm just projecting my Brawl fears into this one, maybe I'm wrong but I read region as in the same country, meaning I'd never be able to find an oponent, just like in Brawl.

Sports games have taken quite a few leaps forward in the past few years.

Especially since that 10+ year old N64 game is available on the Wii's Virtual Console at a fraction of the price.

Having watched some videos of Mario Tennis Open, I see no real reason to get it, given how little it brings to the table.

Okay, thanks, my Friend Code is 1118-0227-9186. (I probably won't be able to keep you on my Friend List for very long because I'm almost back at 100 Friends, luckily I just deleted a few so I have room for you right now.)

Welp, I'm passing on this one now. I got over being disappointed by the lack of an RPG mode, but now I can't even play full matches on line? No thanks, Nintendo. I guess I'll save my $40 for something else :(

I unlocked a costume for my Mii.

Here are the before and after pictures, lol:

GiantBomb Quick Look is up for those who don't follow that thread:

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-mario-tennis-open/17-5991/

bahahaha awesome xD

Nice. Okay I'm feeling even better about the game now just from the single player content. I think they made a good point that maybe perhaps you aren't suppose to be super excited about this game. Perhaps it's suppose to just be a solid game to buy if you are interested in tennis. End of story.

Here's 1 more video of another online match I had just now. I'm using the hidden character
Luma
going up against Luigi:

http://youtu.be/dIgr8VaAM9M?hd=1

2 minutes simply don't seem to allow for such dramatic matches and that's a shame... Well, I guess (hope !) there is an option to quickly re-match with the same persons, so a short 2 minutes match could be considered a full set, and so on... :p

So..after a match, they give you the option to continue playing or go back to the main menu. When you choose "continue playing" you go back to searching for people. They don't give you a rematch. That sucks..especially if you had a good match with someone. Maybe when everyone picks up their copy, searching for people and getting into games will be quick (i hope lol). Quick enough to not care about the whole no rematch thing.

Even with these negative points, I'm still having a great time with this game.

All I want... is for a tennis game to have online doubles. Only allowing you to play doubles with friends (I have one friend on my 3ds and wish to play with him against random opponents) is such a stupid move.

Seems about right.

If you want other disractions or additions(depending on your viewpoint) and aren't in it purely for a great playing tennis game, it seems a waste of your time.

If you're pining for a tennis game on a portable that plays really well and is similar to the N64 one, then it seems like you will get a lot out of this title.

It seems to me the days of RPG modes in these games is over, whether because they want to get them out faster or it's an ADD society that on the whole wants pick up and play titles.

shit like this makes me think nintendo still bothered about getting online right.

On one hand you see Nintendo making big improvements and then you see shit like this.

Has anybody here played the DS version of Sega Superstars Tennis? I love the console version, and I'm wondering how similar the DS one is. If it plays well, has Superstar moves, and the same minigames, then that would mean there's even less reason to get Mario Open Tennis.

To me it seems the Takahashi brothers are still in process bringing their company staff up to speed again. Mario Tennis Advance on GBA was the last game when they still had most of the old staff, since then most of them left and a lot of new staff joined. The slower rate of new games (Camelot used to do like two games a year) as well as the differences in the games themselves may well be related to that.

That's the thing from the quick look and the videos in the thread, I still can't tell if the core tennis is solid with the new circle things. Ryan davis could just be bad, but there doesn't seem to be an effective way to counter those special shots. It seems like you are 'stunned' and it also sets up a star shot.

So there was like a 'this type of shot counters this type of shot' tutorial slide early on but I skipped right over it by accident. Did you see it?

The lack of single player content and the less than stellar roster are disappointing. I'll probably still pick it up, but not for a while me thinks.

Doesn't look like there's gonna be one at this point. Make it yourself if you want one! :p
Come on you people.

This game deserves a OT! This game has to be the biggest release in the last decade. It brings fourth several revolutionary innovations and your telling Mii that there will be no OT.

IS THAT WHAT YOUR TELLING Mii?

You people disgust Mii. How can you not have a OT for such a awesome game?

Okay...seriously no OT? Its really sad, especially to me since I have always liked Mario Tennis as my favorite sport besides Kart. And its online! You people...

This game is really really really really good. It's very intense and satisfying and even strategic. I don't get the middling reviews.

Especially I don't get the complaint about there not being much to do. There is a whole Star Mode to unlock with each character, which has 4 incredibly tough tournaments. (I'm still on the first.) It's also very addictive to customize your Mii with special items, because it lets you precisely tweak exactly how you want to play––amount of spin on each type of shot, power, etc., (which I assume carries over online.)

Just beat all the tournaments and unlocked the highest CPU difficulty (as well as a gimmicky court and a costume). Let's see just how hard this new difficulty is...

Have you played the N64 one???

If so, is the gameplay topnotch on that level or not quite???

I played it way back when, and liked it much, but its been too long for me to say.

I think its going to come down to how much you like the Chance system. At first I thought it was going to be stupid, but ended up I like it a lot. It adds an interesting meta-game where you are second guessing what shot the other player will take. The chance shot isn't always your best shot.
