What's especially mystifying about this is that Brad Pitt became a Hollywood darling by doing low risk, critic friendly films (Thelma and Louise, A River Runs Through It) with a few forgettable but inconsequential movies along the way. When he did take risks, it was always in the service of showcasing his acting ability. He did not become a star by doing things like Battleship.

"some of the best members on the team" doesn't sound so impressive when you realize they're dead last in this group in terms of interest. And the pacing of the film crawled so...damn...slowly once they were on screen together. Would have just preferred more Banner and Stark tbh.

Interest of who? Billing? Well yeah, they don't have their own movies. But Black Widow and Hawkeye were more interesting and did more to the story than Stark, Thor, and CA did. Banner was also one of the best of the team.

I meant capturing the general interest of the audience. But this is all down to personal preference then and I just didn't like those two at all really. Yet I still enjoyed the film quite a bit.

A lot more than I was expecting tbh.

So, Avengers now has 27 box office records, and TDK has been reduced to 2. (Best non-opening Monday/Tuesday). Only record left for Avengers is fastest to 500 which it will get as well...

It's at 457M at 17 days and will get to 500 probably on Sunday next week, which would be 24 days vs 32 for Avatar. It will likely also pass TDK's domestic take by the end of it's 5th weekend.

People in my theater were loving Black Widow, and loved everything Banner did. They were also audibly shocked at Coulson dying. As for Hawkeye, I just think he's cool.

Eh, I think Black Widow was 100000x more interesting than Hawkeye in the movie. Hawkeye's only contribution was a gif. The second they did the typical "Good guy under bad guy's mind control!" plot with him, I was already bored to tears of him.

And there should be a much bigger gap for Banner and Stark and the rest of the team. They were so good that I wanted Avengers 2: Banner and Stark's Excellent Adventures.

Well it still has best non-MARVEL superhero opening weekend right? So.. that's cute.

no doubt. If I included actual gaps in the rankings, it would be so huge that my post would take up half a page.

If theres a video game, Capt America's level will probably be the worst. Nothing but fetch quests and QTEs.

I'm pretty sure he had an escort mission too.

Reuters) - "Battleship," Universal Picture's big budget science fiction film, is likely to dent the studio's profits after it opened with lower than forecast ticket sales, according to analysts.

The film, which Comcast unit Universal has said cost $209 million to produce, generated $23.4 million in ticket sales at theaters in the U.S. and Canada during its opening weekend, according to figures compiled by Hollywood.com.

It had been projected by tracking services used by Hollywood studios to have ticket sales of between $35 million and $40 million.

The movie, which stars Liam Neeson and the singer Rihanna, finished the weekend second to Walt Disney's superhero blockbuster "The Avengers," which led the box office for the third weekend with $55.1 million in ticket sales.

"It is not quite the epic disaster of 'John Carter,' but this will put a dent in Comcast's quarter," said Matthew Harrigan of Wunderlich Securities, who follows Comcast. He did not quantify how much he expected the film to lose.

"John Carter," which sold $30.2 million during its opening weekend in March, saddled Disney with a $200 million loss, the company said. That film cost more than $250 million to produce.

Based on the "John Carter" performance, Universal will lose $100 million to $200 million, estimates Michael Morris of Davenport & Co., who does not follow Comcast, but follows Disney, News Corp. and Time Warner, which also have studio units.

A Universal spokeswoman would not comment. Comcast officials were not immediately available for comment.

The studio is estimated to have spent more than $100 million to market the film, standard for large budget films.

"Battleship" has sold more than $220 million in overseas tickets, Universal has said. It is forecast to reach $250 million in foreign sales.

Movie studios generally receive about half of the revenues from ticket sales in North America and less in foreign markets.

The film needed to generate more than $50 million in weekend ticket sales to break even, said analyst Tony Wible, a managing director at Janney Montgomery Scott who compiles a data base on film performances. He does not follow Comcast.

Last week, Disney's superhero franchise-builder surprised experts by cutting into the expected weekend ticket sales of "Dark Shadows," starring Johnny Depp, which took in just $29.7 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

During the coming weekend, "Battleship," loosely based on the Hasbro board game, will face the third installment of Will Smith's futuristic comedy "Men in Black." The last one in the series, in 2002, generated $190.4 million in domestic ticket sales.

Yeah and I think there's a level where you just stand in one spot and use your shield as a launching pad for other characters.

Most likely he will fire his agent now

Taylor Kitsch's agent got him a leading role in two big-budget blockbuster movies when the only thing he was known for previously was a struggling/niche television series (FNL).

Obviously things didn't work out quite as planned and Kitsch wasn't catapulted into superstardom, but his agent did land him some pretty high-profile gigs. I don't think the blame should lie there.

Order giving simulator. The ending change depending on which orders you give. From the developers that brought you Heavy Rain.

lol, that's the problem you get when you throw a human (superhuman but whatever) into a team with a god, a giant beast and super-robot man.

Makes me wonder how they'd handle Batman if they ever made a Justice League film (thank God they haven't though. Separate universes please)

From the jist of what was cut, it sounds like this was very much going to be a spiritual Cap successor, and maybe the material would have fleshed out his arc abit. Unfortunately he just seemed a bit ancillary in the final version. Which is a shame, because Chris was nailing Cap.

I can't believe we might end this year with 3 separate movies over $400 million. Not even one made it last year for reference. The box office has been crazy amazing this year and we're not even half way done yet.

I'm excited to see those scenes, but Whedon was right to cut them. We got what we needed to know from the punching bag scene, the rest would have overpowered the movie. Cap 2 is a better place for the stuff.

The scene where he meets Peggy in a nursing home? That would've been terrible, I really hope they don't go with that cop out in CA2.

I have no idea what you mean by cop out, but anyway I doubt they'll reshoot the scene for Cap 2 since its included on the Avengers disc.

The true thread.

It wasn't THAT long ago these were lucky to reach over 2 pages. What happened? The avengers made people interested or something?

Hello, my name is Busty and I endorse this thread.

It's interesting that the media haven't really gone after Battleship the way they did with John Carter. JC may not have been a very good film but it was certainly more deserving of success that the horrendous and cynical monstrosity that was Battleship.

Though Battleship is the most expensive film that Universal has EVER made it's not one of the most expensive films EVER unlike John Carter....,

Lol. I know what cop out means, I just don't know why you feel that scene is one without watching it first.

I'm assuming Whedon had an interesting angle to explore.

Is there a full list of the scenes that were cut?

They will go after it starting tomorrow and the stock price gets slammed a bit

Soooo, not only is Battleship a total fucking bomb in every sense of the word this weekend it's probably going to finish it's US theatrical run with a gross of just $50/55m.

I expect the fallout from this disaster to really hit the fan in the next few weeks. With some executives being shown the door and some policy changes at the studio.

The very idea of Universal's most expensive film EVER (which Battleship is) opening to just $25m is truly stunning. I wonder who is going to carry the can for it. Hmmmm.

all their movies look terrible this year. Bourne Legacy is the only one which can make a good profit.

they will make good money in 2013 with Despicable Me 2, Fast 6, Jurrasic Park 4 and RIPD

Whaaa?

Well, you already know I don't assume much from Whedon.

I guess we'll find out once the BR hits, but I can pretty much imagine how that scene will play out fairly well:

They meet, she's elated to see him, he's elated to see her, cue witty joke about how he's still young and she's old, they finally get that dance, end scene.

*yawn*
