Rumor: New Wii U controller (analog sticks)?

Updated the OP with some info from our French Leaker IdeaMan.

Eh, not to join in on the IdeaMan bashing but most of those points read like the speculation here since the controller pic leaked - the "NFC sticker" and "TV/pad switch" particularly. If I was being cruel, I'd say it read more like a summary of what has been said here rejigged and gussied up to make it sound more like an "inside scoop".

But that would be cruel.

For those of you who worked under NDA's, how many pages are they usually in length? I imagine they have to be pretty fucking crushing if you breach confidentiality. Are there any known past cases of someone breaking NDA and what happened to them?

Nintendo's ones are tiny.

I hear on the grape vine the guy who leaked the picture is now fired and may well be taken to court. A good lesson in breaking NDA's, don't do it. It can cost you your job, money and ruins things for everyone else. I doubt he'll ever get to work in the industry again.

well that certainly has to hurt....alot.
poor guy.

I agree. I have no idea why people believe that guy.

That's too bad what happened, but he had it coming. I wonder if he is looking back in retrospect, thinking if leaking this, something we were going to find out about in two weeks, was really worth risking his job over. Just goes to prove how strict NDA is.

I'm sure that he already regrets it. Especially since he'll likely find it very hard to get a job in the industry again.

IdeaMan

My source is my ass!
Who IdeaMan? So you're a developer who has been doubting idea man?

Edit: New info from IdeaMan was disappointing at worst. Way to hype a lackluster tidbit.

Well, as explained in the "extended" post, i wanted to add in this list the switch to traditional stickers, change of button layout, modification of the shape. It was more sexy huh, but i was scooped by this surprising leaked picture just 2 days before (that i find too much spoiling btw :p). Anyway, the increase in screen size, the confirmation of NFC sensor, etc, are still interesting imo :)

Yeah, I've had my fill. That art style - after TWW, FS, FSA, TMC, PH, and ST - is a little played out.

It's not like FS, FSA, or MC looked like WW, PH, and ST in game. The promotional art was the same, but the games look nothing like the others.

Do we know what position he had? Hopefully not a large one, could've been the coffee (or tea!) maker or something.

I mean TT Fusion (the LCS dev, not certain if it's the TT Games team that leaked it) was formed by ex-Warthog folks, not sure how much of TT Fusion is of whom now, maybe some of the main staff migrated there over the years.

Aha! He was a QA Tester. I don't think TT Fusion (or the main TT Games) are going to go astray from this loss. :p

Contract-length. It varies depending on the secrecy of what you're involved with.

I know of only one case of straight NDA-breaking by someone that should have known better. He was sued for the amount outlined in the NDA (which was an agreed-upon amount based on what an NDA leak would cost them in revenue), his organization lost the exclusive they had on it, they weren't given review copies, and were generally considered pariahs among other developers. If they were bigger, maybe that wouldn't have mattered, but they were big enough to get information but small enough to not have any clout.

Add me on Team Pro-Gate!

I still think that if the 3DS had the gates, then Mario 3D Land wouldn't have had that forced 8-way direction thing.

But honestly, whether or not it has gates is not a big deal to me compared to things like
resistive vs capacitive
.

And their website too, although the press release today made no mention of the "Nintendo Network." I kinda like the name, pretty catchy, but maybe Nintendo doesn't want anybody confusing it with whatever they'll call the Wii U's online.

Well they're calling they're new online services Nintendo Network starting with 3DS, so I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that's what the Wii U's will be too.

In response as to how long NDA's can be, I have no idea since I've never really been under one... but is it not mostly common sense? Even if I wasn't under NDA, I wouldn't take pictures of stuff like this at work and upload it to Twitter.

Bingo.

I'm sure he's going to miss the long hours and minimum wage testing Lego games for bugs.

Probably the smartest career move he ever made. I'd be surprised if this lawsuit goes anywhere. It's the UK not America.

It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of sting, as length and liability would vary from NDA to NDA.

As an example, my company has a fairly standard NDA that we get external consultants to sign, and it's 18 pages long, consisting of 15 main section, each with multiple clauses.

And so we still don't know what that square button under the screen is for. hmmm

It's the same shape as the "thing" under the +pad, which is thought to be where you place your NFC items, so my guess is that the button is to activate NFC "search mode". The rounded square under the +pad will probably light up when you push the button.

I said it in the speculation thread and I will say it here, too...

I'm probably the only man here mourning the loss of slide pads.

But if it appeases those of you allergic to change, so be it, I suppose.

Can't say I dislike the rest of the changes made to it, though.

I miss them too.

As others have said, depends the project, context and what the NDA being up entails.

Thing is, you need to not look at this guy as an individual, but the kind of job he had and the many others who share it. There would be thousands of people around the world who've seen, touched and played with this revision of the controller. Testers are an integral part of game production, and many people would be testing with these controllers, including his own colleagues. All of these people would have signed the same contract, with the same requirements. And they would have done so many times before on other projects, for other games, on other hardware.

Confidentiality is a big part of working in any industry, especially one like this. You just don't do it. Not because of an air of secrecy, but because it's something not meant to be public. It's your job not to tell people. It's what you get paid for.

This idiot decided to leak it. It's no different to any other person in any other job doing the exact opposite of what their contract entails, what they're paid for, and why they were hired in the first place. Idiocy breeds punishment, and thus this guy is punished with losing his job.

Such a silly thing too.
