Nintendo E3 2012 Conference Thread

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I'm not just speaking of this particular presentation. The fact is that the output of DS and Wii during the period of time 2005-2008 was better than the last couple of years. And considering that they kept hiring 200-400 people per year since 2006, I'm of course baffled by the lack of progresses.

Again, with Nintendo only showing stuff coming out before April 2013, I don't think E3 is representative of what their studios are doing.

The bigger issue others have touched on is Nintendo did not at all manage expectations. They were silent for a year, promised a huge unveiling, and only showed launch stuff. Just baffling.

Nailed it.

They left the internet community to its own devices (which usually results in us hyping ourselves into oblivion) and kept their mouths shut for an entire year only to show....

Pretty much nothing new. We knew about NSMBU, Pikmin 3 (sort of), Batman, Alien, etc. We weren't given any details on price, launch date, how the online actually works, etc.

And, hell, we even seemed to go backward, from the Zelda tech demo last year to nothing from the franchises people want to see.

Anybody could have seen this coming, so I question why Nintendo didn't.

no one could have predicted this cluster of shit

the only thing that can be predicted is that all fans will jump back on the train whenever Nintendo wants them to jump back on

a Nintendo Direct full of new software videos alone can get us all hyped up again, sadly

You realize that he didn't say 'This is what you've all been waiting for' right?

Sorry, I was just going by what kerub said. So I rewatched the last 14 minutes of the conference and he didn't say that. He opened by saying "Welcome to Nintendo Land." Then he closed by saying "Thanks again, and let's finish with one more walk through the theme park that is...Nintendo Land. Enjoy." So, both Nintendo and Reggie's credibility for closing a show competently are still 100% in the toilet.

Right. To be honest Reggie himself handled the show pretty well, I think he's a great speaker, there just weren't any surprises and I highly doubt Reggie is behind that. All they had to do was invert the order of the conference and show P-100 and the conference would be much more serviceable, even if devoid of megatons.

Eh, I dunno. I'm also beyond irritated at how long Reggie took to intro everything and everyone he spoke to and how he subverted the whole purpose of Sunday's Nintendo Direct by going on and on about the hardware and controller all over again when we were supposed to hear about games. Iwata also made himself look really bad by never coming on stage and by telling us Sunday night they'd use 'Other opportunities to talk about 3DS software' then we get Scott Moffitt's awkward 3DS segment talking about three Mario related games we already know about.

Comparison of WiiU/Ps3-Version of AC3.
Not judging from direct-feed, but you can see some differences:

It is not by me.

I don't know if this has been posted before but this interview from Entertainment Weekly shows why Zelda Wii U wasn't shown. Apparently, they are still in the R&D stage. Some ideas that they have is to cut back on motion controls which Miyamoto says turned some people off and they also want to bring Zelda to a "very big audience."

can you list some differences? not being a smartass, i'm just not good at spotting that type of stuff.

You can't tell much from non-direct-feed. The PS3 one looks SubHD, but I wouldn't be quick to judge that based on the fact that the previous AC titles were 720p on the consoles.

Taking out the blue hue given by the screen due to it being off-screen footage, AC3 looks identical (there are more people on the lower Wii U screen, but that's probably because of it taken at different times).

It looking identical to the PS3 version is not a good thing at all though.

The textures seem a bit smoother, especially in the second pic at the spot he is running on.

But it could just be, because it isnt direct-feed.

If you go see Nintendo Direct you'll see how brief he was talking about those things in the conference, he couldn't just ignore them. I know it's cool to hate on Reggie, but if he wasn't a good speaker, the cult of Reggie wouldn't have been created the first place. Moffitt on the other hand is still too stiff and awkward to be on stage.

Haven't been following this thread, but has any of the hardcore ninteno fans spun this press conference as good or passable?

Definitely seen as a disappointment. Even the most Nintendoest of the reasonably sane Nintendo posters (ones who stepped away briefly from GAF to avoid getting banned via meltdown, for instance), used terms like "non-impressed".

However, there are some reasonable positive spinnings, some examples of which ae:

* The launch window lineup, as much as it desperately needs a huge anchor title, is not really subpar as most launch window lineups for new consoles go.

* Ubisoft's Zombi remake turned out to be surprisingly good, with logical gameplay ideas (I like that they're using the "gameplay doesn't pause while you're focusing away from the TV screen so the devs can throw monsters at you while you're distracted" mechanic that I've been hoping would appear in RE games) and a more usage of old-school game ideas (less linear exploration, healing via items instead of ducking behind boulders, hidden items all over the place) that I personally prefer and therefore than I think desperately need to make a resurgence.

* Holy shit, I really don't like turn-based RPGs or even RPGs in general, but Paper Mario is ridiculously good looking.

* "RAAAARGH I LIKE FRENCH FOOD… I'M HUNGRY NOOOOOW."

* Apparently a few of the "Nintendoland" games are deceptively very fun.

* We've seen further third party announcements (like Madded and FIFA) for this year which weren't covered in the N-Conf, so the door is open to more launch window games

There are other things, like Rayman looking pristine, that we already knew about before E3. But yeah, we're having to resort to cherry picking here, and Nintendo shouldn't be treating its peeps like that.

For me, the PS3 Version looks blurrier, like it has a lower IQ. Also is semms like in the distance there is more fog than in the WiiU Version. Also some textures semm slightly improved, but the differences can also come from different quality cameras to take these pictures.

But in these images the WiiU Version definetly looks prettiert

I just want to reiterate, that EA DID NOT confirm Madden and FIFA. They said they had sports stuff in development for Wii U. They said nothing about specific games or whether they would be there at launch.

So my company plays a pretty big part in this whole Wii U thing.

Here's a press release we recently sent out.

http://www.ghs.com/news/20120327_ESC_Nintendo_WiiU.html

Every bit of software behind the things the user sees on the screen is built with our software -- even the GamePad.

Although i'm not directly involved with this partnership, having always been a big Nintendo fan it's pretty exciting to be working for a company that is.

Crap, really? Sorry, then, didn't mean to pass along inaccurate info.

Can you tell us whether GHS Multi version 6 will be what devs will be using to compile on final hardware instead of GHS Multi 5.x IDE that's in the current kits? According to your latest release notes version 6 has "significant performance enhancements" for PowerPC which is obviously the CPU running the Wii U :)

It's possible, but i'm not certain. MULTI 6 was only recently released, and this partnership happened before then.

Edit: For all I know they're already using it. Information isn't easy to come by since i'm not directly involved.

No worries, thank you for making it clear :)
GHS is an extremely secure platform so congrats on the partnership

Can you compare what you guys offer to what is being used by Microsoft or Sony now?
What do you guys offer that helps WiiU over the current gen competition?

Can't say. I'm not an engineer so I don't actually use our software. I would rather not say what I do.

This is our first step into the gaming arena. Hopefully we'll continue to provide for this market in the future.

ZombiU will play a factor in ubisofts viewpoint. Even Yves hinted Watch Dog is possible but you can bet your ass they are looking at their Core game exclusive and testing

Do we even know when ZombiU will be released? It looks like it needs more time in the oven. It would make sense if they looked at how AC3 or Rayman sold first. I can see 2 or all 3 doing a million or more during the launch period since Nintendo only has Mario doing the heavy lifting. Pikmin is not a huge seller. Wiifit U and Nintendoland are a wild cards.

Mr Iwata thanks non-specific action figure for his wonderful performance.

Stuff like this is like getting the "puppy dog eye treatment". LOL.
