2012 NBA Finals |OT| Good Job, Good Effort

And it still trumps Skip so why the fuck are we even on this...

Because Skip's job is to entertain. And Cuban's complaints really rested on the Mav's not getting credit for the one title they'll ever get while he's heavily involved in the organization.

Further, Cuban was wrong on a couple of key things.
1) Athletes certainly care what's being said about them, the best athletes are masters at tuning it out. But a lot of guys get really bothered by flack at times.
2) LeBron checked out, his numbers mattered. Everyone was eating this up last year. Yes, the Mavs should have gotten credit for their defense, but Cuban came on the show and merely said the exact opposite of what Skip said, all the while wagging his finger about generalities and using generalities as well: "all the media does," "you NEVER use facts," so on and so on. Skip's a joke, but that doesn't mean Cuban isn't either.

I mean this is the dude who quipped, "well gosh, I wish Steve Nash played like a MVP when he was with us!" I guess Nash didn't want to play like an MVP hard enough when he was with the mavs, right Mark?

Skip was boxed into a corner where he essentially agreed with Cuban's premise that, based on Skip's logic, Dallas didn't even need to scheme or defend Lebron since he would've stood there doing nothing anyhow. Lebron just didn't want it enough then, and that's all that mattered.

so many OMGWTFBBQ sauce gifs ran through my mind at that point. and i didn't even get my chemo treatment yet.

and from what i've read on Bayless he was actually a highly respected journalist back in the day, then went slowly off the deepend in Dallas when he accused Troy Aikman of being gay in a book on the Cowboys dynasty, then by slipping further into cantankerous old white guy with aid of his ESPN spotlight.

What is this Skip defense force? lol

Dude has been a "sports journalist" for a long time. It IS his job to know something beyond yelling blah, blah he wanted it more, hyperbole nonsense in the morning.

I bet he would categorize himself as a sports journalist, not an entertainment personality.

Is he fine as a entertainment program host, that focuses on sports? Sure I guess.

SAS is going downhill as well. I used to watch that show (whatever it's form) since back when woody page was on it. Skip has been getting worse and worse. I guess it's good for the ratings.

I liked it better when they had the rotating guest hosts, but since SAS has been on and all the tebow nonsense, I watch less and less.

Sorry to interrupt, but I just had to post one more pic concerning the Zombie Sonics fans that showed up to the Finals in Miami:

So goddamned awesome! XD :jnc

Someone may have posted this already but Mike Miller said that he will retire if he cannot play, and he basically said that he understands the new CBA is a bitch and he doesn't want to be a liability and will retire if his money is better spent elsewhere.

Damn...

So glad he got a ring, and it was made even better that he played his ass off on the night that sealed it.

If you think Vince fucking Carter or T-Mac would have drawn that pivotal late Game 6 foul against Bibby, you're sorely mistaken.

Without Kobe stepping up and taking the hard hit from Bibby's forehead, that series is over.

this made me laugh too hard. tmac wouldn't have got the team out of the first round btw, he is tmac

If that was his last game, what a great way to end his career. Having his best finals game.

wtf. Skip and SAS ply their trade as sports journalists. instead of basing their views objectively on execution they instead wax prosaic on subjective nonsense they only believe in, throwing figures in as needed to suit those narratives. that Skip couldn't even answer Mark's basic question on zone defense then highlights another point - Skip knows shit.

both SAS and Skip have ample opportunities to pour over game footage in pre-meeting before they shoot if they wanted. i think Skip's even admitted at some point that he sometimes glances at a box score and doesn't even watch a game before opening his mouth.
Its their JOB to generalize

that shit sells

While Heat players were spending more than $200,000 at Club LIV after winning the title, Pat Riley had a quiet dinner at Prime 112; he received a standing ovation when he walked in at 2:45 a.m. and was approached with congratulations from Charles Oakley and Tim Hardaway.

Also at Prime: Oklahoma City's Serge Ibaka, sitting silently in the corner and looking miserable.

Do you not watch the show?

You really think that those two screaming at each other about specific Xs and Os are supposed to bring in viewers?

Accept that you are watching a tv show on ESPN2. This isnt PBS.

Except we aren't talking about ratings. FT ratings might be high and ESPN might want them to do this but Cuban was talking more at large about Sports Journalism.

ESPN has 2-3 channels and has to fill up with content 24/7 364 days. They figured out that these talk shows work great. PTI, ATH, FT, and whatever else they have works better than reruns of Sportscenter. So they stick by it but that doesn't mean its good, right, or even productive.

And look at how all the posters here seemingly are obsessed with legacies, comparing everyone to Jordan, players choking, pressure, and whatever else sports cliche you can think off...its rubbing of into the fans. Cuban was 100% right when he said after a big game, instead of discussion strategy they spend time arguing "WHO WANTED IT MORE? DID THEY WIN OR DID THE OTHER TEAM LOSE?"

It is a bunch of BS nonsense which they use to fulfill their own self proclaimed prophecy.

Only part I disagreed with Cuban was where he attempted to claim there is no human/emotional part to the. Of course there is and I think he was exaggerating to make a point.

Skip's monologues and talks remind me of Barts People from the Simpsons episode with KIDZ NEWZ

Exaggeration or not, this is a big point I also don't agree with Cuban on and Israel Gutierrez pointed it out right after Mark was on and he was very right. Imo, the human element is very important in sports and I think that's what most of those guys who may not dissect every single play are going for. It's one of those things that everyone can understand even with or without numbers.

There is literally no one in the west that can compete. Out for blood or not, they have an easy road to the finals unless San Antonio adds some great pieces.

Healthy T'wolves won't be a push over.

Grizzlies

Clippers, maybe, if they stop acting like morons and focus on winning.

Mavs with Deron

W's with Deng and bogut/curry?

No, the west isn't 10 teams deep anymore, but there's still quite a few good and young teams coming through.

Ill be honest, I havent watched a Twolves game sine the KG era. I was never under the impression that they are a legitimate threat. Clippers/Mavs are a problem, especially if Deron signs with Dallas, but I cant see the clip show showing any real problem to OKC.

The Spurs were like two games away from beating the Thunder and most of the games were pretty close.

This is true, but the Spurs window is closing rapidly.

They've lingered at semi-contender status for some time. However, I don't think their big three and supporting cast is going to get any better than they were this year, and there are a number of other teams in the west improving or have the potential for substantial improvement.

The Spurs haven't made the Finals since 2007. This was their best chance since then and they got backend swept.

Spurs surprised me too this season, it's like they went beast mode at the end of the season. Luck ran out when they left home after getting 2-0 though. :/

I just love Riles!

http://www.miamiherald.com/2012/06/25/v-fullstory/2866418/with-another-nba-title-won-it.html

“We’ve got a championship in our back pocket. Just one. One of the things you don’t want to do after it is in your back pocket, you don’t want to start reminding everyone how you did it. That is the start of the team on the demise. I remember when we won in 1987, best year we ever had with the Lakers, Mychal Thompson was our Shane Battier. We won the championship, had a great night, celebrated, a really great night, and he was in the weight room at 7 a.m. the next morning. I remember that 25 years later. You don’t want to get too drunk with your success. You don't want to waste a lot of time telling everyone how you mastered it. Simply, euphorically, quietly, enjoy it. That is hard for the contemporary generation today to understand."

“I will ... for a week,” he says. “We will. Party. Celebrate. They’ve already had three all-nighters. It is absolute joy. They should totally immerse themselves in the good feeling. Share it with family and friends and everyone who stuck with you. Enjoy the golden glow for another week. But it can’t be a party every night all offseason with someone slapping you on the back. They’re beyond famous now. I hope we deal with it how Mychal Thompson did. LeBron met with [Hakeem] Olajuwon last offseason to improve his game. Is he going to do something like that again this year? Is Wade going to do something about his health now that he’s 30? Maybe think of a different night-to-night approach? Is Chris, God bless him, he’s our center? Our best lineup, the one we go to war with, is with him at center. Is he going to be OK with that now that he has won? Now our guys have to get better in the head, and they need to know how to handle and defend the championship, and win more. I'm going to wait about a week, and then I'm going to send them letters and reminders.”

After reading that it's not hard to figure out why Pat Riley has been so successful. The Heat are lucky to have him. I'd move mountains to have someone like that as a mentor in my life.

Got home just in time off work to be able to chase down the floats and see the players. Wish I could've gotten passes to the arena, but it was great. Battier with the 2K line was great.

I wouldn't count them out even though the Spurs like to get reverse swept (so delicious).

Remember that's what people said about the Jazz at the end of the 90s, yet they made the Finals 2 years in a row.

Pop is an all-time great coach and you never count them out as long as he's coaching.
