Spelunky |OT| With Fate Guiding My Every Move

I think I'm actually going to dig out my Xbox for this. I haven't touched it basically since Shadow Complex came out.. but I'm a huge Spelunky/Yu fan, I've beaten the PC version 5-6 times (from the start, no tunnels, holla) and it's still my go-to game when I'm bored and want to relax. I'll GLADLY buy it again if/when it comes to Steam/PC in general.

anyways, seeing as how I'm not super sure on how XBLA works, that July 4th release date is for people with Xbox Gold, right? don't I have to wait a week or so before I can purchase it on a Silver account?

IT should be out for every member on the 4th. The exclusivity between gold/silver is usually only for demos.

I'm 95% sure you'll be able to get it on the 4th.

EDIT: Beat me to it, ha

I don't have an Xbox, but I'll buy this day one for the PC when it comes out. I love the original. I'm sure it's just a matter of time before Derek brings it to Steam.

Hell yeah at the reviews! There are a bunch of fantastic games on XBLA, as a matter of fact...I spend more time on xbla games last year than on retail games. Another great summer of arcade :D

Not to be that person, but:

I really do hate Spelunky. It is frustrating in a way that few console games ever are. It’s audio-visual trappings don’t really help the matter for me, but the sense of discovery has me intrigued to find out what happens next. That doesn’t make Spelunky a good game, but I can’t wait to get back to playing it.

From the VentureBeat review. Spelunky is not a game for that person.

Wow at the scores, looking really forward to it since I saw a video on the 1up show I believe. Thats a long time, and it looks like it was worth the wait.

Forgot that there was an OT for this, so I'll repost what I put in the other thread:

Live stream of the game here: http://www.twitch.tv/manvsgame

Been going on for hours already, so the archive should be pretty big when it's all said and done.

Been watching since you posted that link in the other thread. That dude has had me rolling several times now.

Totally guilt free in watching all this, since I can't spoil levels for myself. I guess you can for items and such, but having already played the PC version I know most of what's there.

I'm trying to avoid certain things. I still won't look up things about the original Spelunky just so I can still discover new things when I play it. The discovery is one of my favorite aspects of the game so I am trying to go in knowing as little as possible. I can definitely see why others wouldn't want to do that though, especially if they are trying to see whether they want to buy it or not.

meat boy spotted!

also you damn lucky XBLA folk, I played 100+ hours of the original Spelunky, here's hoping the exclusivity deal aint that long

Oh man, it's been soooo long since I've been this hyped for a game, I'm counting down the hours. I finished the game once on PC (756 tries, no shortcuts) and then decided to wait for the XBLA version to really dig in (fnar fnar).

SO EXCITED!

Glad to see the reviews are good, there was never a doubt in my mind it would be great but these kinds of scores may mean the game will be a success for Yu. Personally I'm hoping Spelunky becomes the Demon's Souls success story of XBLA.

When you buy the game go to the options and switch your damsels to pugs. That is the proper way to play.

If the game is has good as the PC version was, everyone should buy it.
Sadly, I don't have a XBox, so I have to play the old version :(

Played 20 times. Died 20 times :lol

Made it out of the mines twice. How many times do you have to see Tunnel Man to get a shortcut?

Played for a good 3 hours last night. I just couldn't put the controller down.

Even after all the hours I've spent on the PC version a few years ago, this still felt new and fresh. Difficulty hasn't changed, which is awesome.

Seriously well worth the purchase.

Only Con I'd say are probably the deaths caused by non-stop stuns. It's annoying when you can't move for 3-4 seconds while stuff keeps hitting you.

Also,
I found a gold monkey that poops gold

Did an interview with the composer for the XBLA version yesterday:

Original Sound Version said:
OSV: Now, in these days you are most known for Spelunky, the Spelunker influenced arcade action game by Derek Yu, Indie game legend. How did you come to know Yu and become the composer for the revamped XBLA game?

Suhrke:Derek and I knew each other somewhat beforehand. We had exchanged some emails in the past regarding potential collaboration projects between our websites; Pause and TIGSource. When he announced there was going to be an XBLA version of Spelunky, I sent him an email asking if he had anyone on board for the music, as I was a fan of the original game. I did a couple of demo tracks for him, and I was brought on board for the project.

OSV: What kind of direction did Yu put upon you when you began your work on Spelunky on the XBLA?

Suhrke: Derek didn’t tell me what to do at all. We both agreed the music should mirror the game in that it has oldschool gameplay and modern graphics etc. That meant a mixture of oldschool VGM and a more modern approach to game music. Beyond that, it was up to me to figure out how to achieve this. We’ve kept close contact throughout the development, though, so it’s not like he didn’t influence the outcome at all. I think the end result is a fair mix between what I like, what Derek and Andy likes, and what the players out there seemed to want.

OSV: And what about a soundtrack release?

Suhrke: Yeah, in about a month or so, for a very cheap price!

Super excited to get my hands on this but part of me fears that i will develop rage problems over this game.

That OST is ringing me of an old-school Sega OST, from what I've heard; I can't get enough of that.

Same here -- although I have a feeling it'll be more fair than Ms. Splosion Man or Super Meat Boy. One of the comments I saw from the Giant Bomb QL called it a "2D Dark Souls," which may not be entirely accurate.

I'm actually finding it funny rather than annoying, some of the deaths are so stupid, and they're always your own fault

I imagine it's going to lead to an awesome Rage Quit though.
