Japanese Sales: 2012 Jul 09 - Jul 15

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Yeah, Skyward Sword definitely bombed in Japan; and it's not that for big franchises Wii was dead, since Kirby sold almost 700k, and we had other cases where games sold remarkably well last year (Just Dance, Family Fishing, Go Vacation, GoldenEye).

And in the meanwhile, Zelda OoT 3D is probably approaching the 600k mark while we're speaking. So strange to see a remake outclass so much the next main entry in the series XD

Well it is OoT. It just goes to show that Zelda isn't dead in Japan as a series. :p

Looks like retailer digital versions of NSMB2 and OniTore are being sold at a slight discount at 7-11 (as I expected they would be)

4,480 yen (4,800 yen msrp) for New Super Mario Bros. 2

3,580 yen (3,800 yen msrp) for Oni Training

I didn't notice the small discount while previously viewing that page. While its only a couple of bucks, that's better than no discount at all.

More or less, yeah.

[GBC] Mario Tennis (108,870) 357,986
[GBA] Mario Tennis Power Tour (42,857) 135,815
[3DS] Mario Tennis Open (124,377) 256,857

[PSP] Virtua Tennis: World Tour (9,051) 23.907
[PSV] Virtua Tennis 4: World Tour (lol) lol

[PSP] Hot Shots Tennis: Get a Grip (45,278) 101,577

Yeah but it's a continuation of the console series. Last I checked it was lagging behind Mario Power Tennis, though I'd guess it will have longer legs.

I'm surprised Mario Hoops and Sports Mix sold much better than the other Mario sports titles. I though baseball and football were more popular in Japan than basket. Maybe Final Fantasy hardcore fans bought them for the included characters? :p

It says it's the same price as all versions.
(Amazon has the retail version for ¥3,927, no listing for DD)

Dilema for the August predictions.

The month according to trackers ends on Aug 26th, and that leaves out the usually packed last week of the month. We have to choose:

- end August on the 26th and push the games released on 08/30 to September;
- extend August to end on September 2nd.

Here are the notable games (as usual let me know if I forgot something):

08-02 [WII] Dragon Quest X
08-02 [PSP] All Kamen Rider: Rider Generation 2
08-02 [NDS] All Kamen Rider: Rider Generation 2
08-02 [PSP] Corpse Party: The Anthology
08-09 [PSP] Kuroko's Basketball
08-09 [PSP] Gundam AGE: Cosmic Drive / Universe Accel
08-23 [PSP] Bakemonogatari Portable

08-30 [PSV] Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f
08-30 [PS3] Hyperdimension Neptunia V
08-30 [3DS] Senran Kagura Burst
08-30 [3DS] Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers
08-30 [PS3] Sengoku Basara HD Collection

I expect a small discount in America as well for the digital cards. Otherwise people have no incentive to even buy these cards from retailers,

My vote probably means very little (junior and all), but it seems entirely logical to go with the second option (extend to September 2). Seeing the 30 falls at the end of the month, just include it with the baseline start of the following month. Makes sense to me ^_^

If you're guessing which will sell highest in it's week. I sincerly hope that Senran Kagura Burst can do it. It's going to be a really good game and should get quite a lot of sales from the first games buyers. Infact, how much did Senran Kagura sell overall?

As far as I'm concerned, Dragon quest is going to be a shot in the dark, I haven't got the slightest clue honestly, so I gather it might be fun to make predictions about it.

Other than that, Miku and Devil summoner may be other interesting titles, Sengoku Basara, Senran Kagura and All Kamen rider being other options although I don't remember much about them aside from the titles.

Oh wait, Project Diva is out the same time as Senran Kagura? I think Diva has a chance depending on if it can shift some vitas the same week. The Diva games on PSP sold really well, but it's a case of whether the fans upgrade or have upgraded already.

I was going to import it to play on my dad's vita, didn't think it'd be worth it (I own both the others though :p)

You should probably just pick either the Famitsu monthly setup, or the NPD monthly setup, and stick with it moving forward.

Personally, I'd probably go with the NPD setup, just for consistency with the other major sales threads.

From what I've played it's by far the best yet. The 'scratch' commands actually feel really good to do, especially in the technical zones, and everything looks so beautiful on that screen. x_x Really heavily promoted, too. The 'Touch and Try' tour has been going on for a month or so now and every Bic / Yodobashi Camera have demo units. Convenience stores seem to be gearing up to sell it too (seen a few posters etc next to the dl codes). I have a feeling Sony may be stepping in to provide some marketing exposure here in the hope that it pushes Vita hardware.

I think it may actually benefit from being the sole 'visible' game on the platform for its launch period, similar to Persona 4.

Edit: Oh, just as I was complaining about DQX marketing yesterday, it seems to be picking up. >_> Pepsi Nex are doing those little phone attachment things you get with the bottles, and at least 4 different stores were advertising it outside in Shibuya earlier.

All these news are from Famitsu, it seems, since they're in the Hokanko Famitsu summary. There's also another Tamagotchi announced for 3DS, releasing this November.

There's a really nice limited edition Vita for Project Diva - so PSV should be above 30k that week.

Ok, you're back. Have you some insider news for us like the last time with Black & White 2 for DS? XD

I never left ?_?

Nahhh I've already said that there won't be anymore insider info by me. I know you want to know what's doing Retro or the launch date for the Wii U but...

Ok, one more just because you've abandoned comgnet :p Is there any recent Tecmo game on a Nintendo platform (besides FF4) not announced for the West? (wink wink... I'll get banned for teasing one day, I'm sure)

I'm worried about the quality of the games more than what games are coming or the numbers they make (yes, I know I'm in a sales thread) and it seems that NSMB2 is not better than NSMB (and NSMB was a disappointment IMO). Let's hope that NSMB U is at least better than NSMBWii :)

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free

I dont see how you could make this assumption without having played the title or are you just judging it from a graphical stand-point ? NSMB Wii pretty much just uses a higher-def version of the DS Engine and is the far better game.

I said nothing then.... ;-)
Still looking forward to NSMB 2, but they really screwed up not including online coop aswell as the the options to compete with online-friends in the coin-rush mode. A wasted opportunity -.-

Already released or still to be released?
If it's the latter, there's only one thing I can think about: Samurai Warriors 2nd (since Koei-Tecmo are just one thing now...)

NSMB2 being worse than NSMB would be pretty pathetic, although if it was actually outsourced it would make sense. Rehashed music all over the place already points towards them pawning it off to someone else. Guess I'll wait for the Iwata Asks.

Naah, from what I've seen NSMB2 is far, FAR better than NSMB. Not worse, far better. It has the crazyness it lacked in NSMB and was pretty present in NSMBWii.

Probably Fatal Frame 2 US.

Damn, you're bad at this ;P

It's not better != it's worse.

Chris, can you hear the devil laughing? We're almost there, dou you want to make any bet for the sales of Oni Training? (remember 500.000 LTD)

If there's one thing Nintendo won't outsource it's a mainline Mario game.

At this point, I can't think of anything else. So, it's something already released. Mmmh... However, the impressions about NSMB2 are not from you, but from your contact, right?
Still, it's better to continue through PM, this is a Sales thread after all.

We are going with the NPD calendar and August ends on 26th leaving the Japanese "last week of the month" releases out of it.

Since the results are based on weekly numbers and not on monthly data like NPD, though, we have the possibility of changing the periods to make the predictions more interesting (or not).

I think we should include up to Sept. 2nd. If we don't, the only game that is worth predicting for is really DQX, seeing as while the other games are (some more than others) still somewhat popular, they won't really sell that well.

If we include the release week of Miku, at least there are 3 (or possibly 4) interesting games to predict for.

Did someone say no top 100 for the first half of the year? Any reason?

It's actually on this week's Famitsu.

It should have come out two weeks ago (by previous years schedule), which is why we we're thinking it would not be published.

Just leave it as planned. Parity was part of the reason for making it this way. All you'd be doing is pulling September's 5th week away from it, weakening it. I also find it more interesting when the predictions are for a longer period of time, so I don't see the value of extending the period so a handful of minor titles get 4 days worth of predictions in.

That said, I also see no particular reason why NSMB2 and Oni-Training can't have second month of predictions. They're both most likely to chart the entire time and it'll require a more educated guess than predicting just two days of sales.

I think the reason people think that NSMB2 is outsourced is a garbled recollection of Brownie Brown doing some of the levels on 3D Land.

I like sticking with the NPD calendar. Since it's weekly, it doesn't really matter, but I just like consistency. Either way should work, though.

I thought so because it just doesn't make sense the NSMB team would be doing both 2 and U, and they'd already been confirmed for the latter. Though yeah, the EAD teams recently subcontracting parts of their games (Brownie Brown on SM3DL, Retro on Mario Kart 7, Monolith on Skyward Sword) does make it seem more believable.

According to the Iwata asks about NSMB2, NSMB2 is being worked on by the younger juniors at EAD under the supervision of the old guard and NSMB Wii U is being made by the older members of staff. Still both being made by EAD but different members for the different games.
