Halo |OT8| A Salt on the Control Room

So anyone planning on going to FanExpo? I'll be there on Saturday with some friends, so if anyone wants to meet up and play some Halo 4 that would be cool.

Honestly you're not missing out much. Having been on a Zelda splurge this year and playing through LttP - Wind Waker, I'm so far in the middle of WW and can say OoT is the worst of the 3D Zeldas so far.
OoT is better than WW but not by much. WW is hurt by its endgame and the fact that two (or is it three) of its dungeons were cut in development

OoT is still worth playing on its own, and it's a great set up for Majora's Mask

Is it bad that I've never played SM64?

I would have you hung by your entrails and your corpse paraded through the streets...

However, to be fair, I have never played a single Legend of Zelda game.

SM64 is better anyway. Probably in the top 5 best games ever made of all time from pure enjoyment to how groundbreaking it was.

While I haven't played through WW in its entirety yet to comment on that, I can say the opposite hurts OoT. There are just so many dungeons that it becomes a tedious blur. Nowadays in particular if you don't have the nostalgia for it, the things like Link's movement speed or the pause before menus pop up really stack up the annoyance in it as well.

I tried out a friend's 3DS version briefly and they spruced up that element, but playing the original version is a slog.

Majora's is fantastic though.

When I played OoT again on the 3DS I found the whole experience as infallible as it was originally. It's an impeccable game, one of the best there is.

You'll see what I mean as you get through it. I kinda agree on OoT, I wish I could skip the Shadow Temple every time, I dislike it more than the Water Temple. WW is still great though.

Also, every other Zelda is better than Twilight Princess

WW is the only 3D Zelda I really like. All the others have some sort of unforgivable flaw(s) that make it hard for me to enjoy. Barren over worlds, annoying babysitter sidekicks, crappy camera controls, etc.

2D Zelda is where the true beauty of the franchise lies. Zelda 1, Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, Minish Cap -- all better than any of the 3D titles.

The only 2D Zelda I've played through is LttP but I'll agree that it blows away the 3D ones. In particular I enjoy not having a fucking musical instrument that I have to input combos and watch an animation for at a regular basis.

It's worked just fine for over a decade. ;-)

to anyone who might care, I really recommend Dust Elysian Tail on xbla, brilliant metroidvania-esque game with awesome
combat and overall engrossing experience with a ton of care for every detail, don't let the anthropomorphic characters turn you off

Wu already put his foot down on that one. Kinda funny.

I can't wait until Christmas break. WinterwonderLAN with my friends involving Halo 4. Glad to see everyone get back into it today, really. I just hope 343 can deliver a product that still feels like Halo. At least, more-so than Reach did.

Speaking of "Over a decade," I was talking about that today.

There will be high school freshmen playing Halo 6 that WERE NOT ALIVE when Halo:CE released.

Windwaker is best Zelda.

OOT doesn't really have any big problems, and Navi's annoyance factor is overstated, but every other game does something better.

MM has the save system, which is the only thing preventing it from being the best.

TP has the empty world and bizarre character design, but the dungeons are great.

SS is sadly outclassed at everything by the other games.

It's visually gorgeous and controls well, but - as I thought the case would be from the videos - the combat is too flashy for me. I keep losing track of what's going on amidst all the screen distortion, slashes and other effects. I'm sure you can get used to it but I have a hard time with games that go OP on stuff like that. I was looking forward to it, too.

Wrong. A Link To The Past is the best.

I can't bring myself to play the 2D Zelda's. It's actually what is keeping me from doing the Zelda franchise marathon I had planned.

Windwaker is best Zelda.

Nope. Wind Waker's art is beautiful but there are too few dungeons, the game is probably the easiest Zelda out there, features an awful fetch quest, and the baton stuff is annoying. At least with the ocarina you could mash in the combination as quick as you could press the buttons.

as an aside, i just played the original Zelda again, and it holds up. Then again I play it every year. So fun.

anyway... uh... that Halo, huh?

That's a shame. But yeah you definitely get used to it and stop losing track of him the more you know and master his moves. Playing on Though or higher (where one or two hit deaths can happen often out of nowhere) really makes you focus on what you're doing and the combat really shines.

v

yeah, I can see many people not being able
to get past the animal characters in this internet age after they've being robbed of their innocence. Really wish Noogy had gone in a different direction with the characters, even if only so the they didn't turn so many people off.
I'm finding the dialogue/plot oddly enjoyable though

I tried the demo and only lasted a few minutes. WAY too much furry weirdness for me and also way too much text and talking. I wanted to like it too because it has a way cool look and I love Metroidvanias, but unfortunately I just couldn't get passed the weirdness.

Edit: Wow, mobile typing fail. Cleaned up some grammar and stuff.

Link to the Past is to Zelda as Sean Connery is to Bond.

End of argument.
Couldn't agree more.

I tried the demo too and agreed that it was a bit overtalkative, in fact the less a game can convey to me with words the better. Though what do you define as "too much furry weirdness"? Just the fact that the characters themselves are anthropomorphized animals?

I don't normally agree with TheSeks but this post was interesting and something I always thought would be beneficial overall in Halo. As great as stat tracking was on Bungie and now HXO it undeniably attributes to some shitty player practices.

*yawn*

Get rid of stats and I don't pick up a halo game again

I play a competitive game to be competitive. Like sports, statistics is how you gauge your skill and identify areas of improvement.

I don't play to be cordial. Or social for that matter.

Hehe, Sean Connery's voice alone makes him the best 007. But I still think Ocarina of Time is the overall. Never played Zelda 2 though; isn't it supposed to be like the Super Mario 2 of Zeldas? Just really out of place but still good in its own right?

The belief that just server lists would work well for console gamers is erroneous. I imagine you could have a successful hybrid, but JUST lists would be fallow and frustrating. And it's not like they're a cavalcade of laughs in PC land.

With how terrible the Waypoint site is they might as well have already gotten rid of stats.

Although, they did bring on that new UI guy. What had he worked on? CoD Elite?

I'd love to have Waypoint, and built into the UI of the game. Some really nifty smart glass stuff would be great to see, too. Hopefully that's out before or near launch.

To be honest, I dislike them. Matchmaking was my first foray into online gaming, and getting into a game in something like battlefield on PC just seems so... (and I'm going to make up a new word here) MicrosoftExcel-ey.

Lists are merely an illusion of choice. Everybody just ends up playing the same damn thing anyways

You can still be competitive without stats. In fact, I'd say they do really little other than outlining your basics like spreads and weapon use. Analyzing replays is a much better tool for that. The stats in this case not being an advocation for abolishing a ranking system.

I agree that having solely lists wouldn't work in the current console setup, since it's difficult to work around the fact that there's still a P2P host involved and what powers you imbue on them could be potentially awful in abusability. I mean, you give people on Steam the chance to use any image they want as an avatar and you see rare sightings of bad content. You give people a very limited option of icons to combine in Halo 3 and they still find a way to make a penis out of it.

I'm a fan of matchmaking because of how it lets me play against a wide breadth of players and meet new people. At least, that's how it used to work back before XBL parties and people playing Reach without their mics in.

I love XBL parties to death, I would never want them gone, but they did kind of kill social life on XBL.

With a server browser, you just end up playing the same people over and over again. You can always switch servers, but some servers have different rules, and some are communities and aren't as welcoming to outsiders, and...It's kind of just a mess.

Yeah, I think I remember reading about this guy being brought on right around the time we saw a bunch of smart glass stuff and people made the connection. So I'm thinking Waypoint is probably gonna be overhauled pretty massively after the Halo 4 release.

If you don't mind me asking, but one thing I've always wanted to know is what ever happened with XBL Public? Why was it given up on after being cut from Halo 3? I really think a Matchmaking/Custom Games Browser hybrid as you suggested could be the next step in evolving the online experience for gaming.

You must have missed the ranking system meltdown from the last OT. I agree with you that you can be competitive without stats, but to remove them would do more harm than good. They provide incentive.
