Halo |OT8| A Salt on the Control Room

Have you ever played a COD game online? This is never an issue, as you are always matched with players who have the DLC if you do as well. You're not randomly matched up with whoever happens to be online at the time; the game purposefully puts you into lobbies with with players who have the same DLC as you do.

It works really well.

I agree, but that's talking about map packs, this is a pre-order dlc, I know a lot of people will pre-order the game, but I know the vast majority of people who live in the UK who know about the supermarket price wars just rely on them. All the same even if matchmaking works stupidly well, it's still bullshit that maps or timed exclusive to perks exist as exclusive dlc.

Also I had no problem with the idea of Halo 2's DLC and Halo 3's heroic that I was subsidizing the maps eventually going free in exchange for getting them early.

The thing was it was fun to get to play them so soon, and then since they were released later to the rest of the playerbase you actually got to play the damn maps you paid for.

The demand for refunds must have been high. However, the DLC for Halo 2 even noted that on such and such date, said content will be made free.

3 hours, 20 minutes to finish ODST campaign solo on Heroic. A bit too easy on Heroic... The ODST, while somewhat slower than the Chief in Halo 3, is also more hardy, you can take a beam rifle shot without dying... Also, some weapons are buffed compared to Halo 3 but the enemies aren't.
Hopefully Halo 4 Heroic is comparable to Halo 3's, challenging (while the game's new anyway, Halo 3's Heroic, while harder than ODST, doesn't give me any real challenge) yet fun.

I also have no problem with them cutting down the prices for it down the line.

The majority of sales are within the first two weeks of the market anyway for game add-ons and game release.. Microsoft would prefer to slowly get more money over the long tail now though.

Yeah, the thing is now they can even mention who is sponsoring the maps going free to everyone downloading them directly. I only knew Mt Dew sponsored the Halo 2 maps because I read Bungie.net. On 360 they could stick an entire banner on the front dash and mention them directly in the DLC download text

I also have no problem with them cutting down the prices for it down the line.

This too, but unfortunately they stopped even doing that. Still can't believe Halo 3's final DLC and all of Halo Wars' DLC is still full price, let alone Reach's

Also:

1) The timeframe the DLC was to be made free was announced at the time of the DLC ("spring", IIRC).

2) The exact date was announced a ways in advance, so new buyers were not surprised.

The entire system was incredibly fair to the community. No one got surprised when they went free, you knew how long you had to wait and could make an informed purchasing decision, and the community was made whole when the DLC went free. It was a very Bungie system - make their money, but do right by the community.

The current system feels like the considerations for the player base were not part of the conversation.

Have you done ODST on Legendary yet? Coastal Highway was one of the hardest things I have ever done in a video game. H3 Legendary was a piece of cake in comparison.

Halo 2's DLC release favored the community the most.

Reach's and Wars' DLC release favored Microsoft the most.

Halo 3's DLC and Halo 3: Mythic was a fairly solid compromise in the middle between the playerbase not being torn apart and MS wanting to make money. And you can literally plot the point from when Halo's DLC pricing went from nice to crap from when MS got Don Mattrick on board. It always seemed like Heroic going free was the last vestige of the Peter Moore regime.

Which is another way to say, things got worse as we went. Aye.

I think the Mattrick pass will help a bit in that regard. Selling all the maps in a bundle at a discount will get a larger pool of players who own them all, as will the inclusion in the LE. Still a step worse than the Mythic solution, but better than Reach by a fair margin.

Especially I think most people will buy them directly at release. Or I hope they do.

Did we ever get a reason from 343 as to why we didn't get a Reach mythic type disk with CEA?

Makes perfect sense.
They wanted the $40 price tag. If another disc had been added, they would have charged. At least that's one of the reasons.

Yeah. From all accounts of Bungie engineers, Reach has a pretty awesome DLC match algorithm. It was just hamstrung by poor decisions made by Microsoft. If we had gotten Halo Reach: Mythic we would probably be getting constant DLC with no DLC required on any list. It was something like a month and half before the majority of Halo 3 Matchmaking was playing via Mythic. If only Reach could have had that happen to it *sigh*

Wars really was a preview of Halo DLC under total Microsoft control with no input from Bungie. (edit: and a shame too since the Wars DLC was pretty neat)

edit2: reworded

I've soloed all Halos, all difficulties. EDIT i've played co-op far less than single player actually, i've played Halo CE(A) co-op maybe twice total, Halo 2 a few times, Halo 3 a couple of times
Halo 2 is the most difficult, ODST is the easiest overall.
The only difficult mission in ODST Legendary is Coastal Highway as you say (because some fucktard decided to force you to follow the frigging garbage truck instead of it following you). Probably one of the most difficult missions on Legendary on any Halo.
Oh yeah, and other than Reach (because i don't like it), i've played all Halos at least twice on solo Legendary (but other than Halo 3 and ODST, i don't think i've played them more than twice not counting co-op).
Never bothered with SLASO runs though, i think i've done one mission in Halo 3 SLASO but i may just as well have given up on it, don't really remember. Too frustrating and slow, too boring.

Is there multiplayer lobby footage? This is minor, but I really disliked how in Reach every Spartan in a lobby was represented on the same model and you only switched parts around as you flicked through all the different people on the lobby. Really cheapened it, didn't make it seem like it was different ones, but the same one that's changing parts. I hope they have them in different poses or completely out of sync this time, so that when you switch to another person's spartan, it really gives the impression you actually changed to another person's spartan and not just switched parts around.

In 2553 the Mountain Dew Corporation Manufacturing Plant Ruins serve as combat training grounds for the new Spartan Class. Fight beside Mountain Dew's refreshing pools of Gamefuel and Energy. 2-8 players.

I ruined the lobby for a couple of people after I pointed out that Elites in the lobby are missing the needles in their needle rifle that they're holding

I hope the map name is Voltage.

I wasn't questioning you or anything, just curious. I mostly stick to Normal difficulty, but I play every game through on Legendary at least once just to say I have. Coastal Highway was insanely difficult for me, I ended up having to reverse down the entire highway so the motherfucking Ghosts hit Buck instead of me. I died 32 times on that mission. Never again.

So when 343i launch Halo 4 all prior DLC from H3/Reach won't work. All topics are being removed from Waypoint. Are they trying to hide something?

This is H4 you're talking about. Of course there's no footage.

If true, that's extremely messed up. I don't understand exactly how it's going to work though, especially for the Halo 3 Mythic disc

So basically, if I don't like H4 and want to go back to H3, the DLC won't work.

I'm going to want a refund...

Cool Ranch Doritos are best Doritos.

Well, damn, that's GENIUS!
I don't remember how i did the mission but i sure as hell didn't do it like that. I rarely think outside the box actually, i prefer playing the game the way it is desinged (dunno why, i facepalmed when my friend told me he ran past some Hunters in Buck's mission).

put that picture in quotes so it resizes it pls

I feel as if the support guy is confused. I doubt the DLC would stop working once halo 4 is released, he is probably just confusing playlist condensation (removal of Anniv. BTB) with removing DLC playability

Holy shit, is that your conversation or did you find it?

Time will tell if Microsoft's Customer Support does truly suck.

I can't see any reason it would stop working.

And if it did, urk gifted me most of it.

Bless him.

I wouldn't look into their support too much, they have no idea about CS:Go release today and that.

Fyrewulff, get in here to back me up.

Ok, not true. They can't just kill your DLC.

IF they wanted to do anything they could:

1. Remove the DLC from the marketplace, which would not make sense because MS will want to suck as much money as possible from it. Also, MS has never removed anything from the store for reasons other than legal disputes (Doom).

2. They could shut off online for Halo 3 and Reach like Chromehounds or original xbox titles (Halo 2). This is doubtful. The only games that have lost online functionality are old sports titles, original xbox titles, and the occasional third party game that has a tiny online population.

That said, MS won't be doing any of these things. They could "kill" DLC by removing it from MM in both Reach and 3 but I highly doubt anyone at 343 would actually want to put the time in to reworking and retooling all the playlists (I know I wouldn't). It would be more work to remove it than it would to let it be.

In short this is a stupid rumor.

Also, never believe anything you read on the Waypoint forums. Ever.
