Soul Reaver may have been the most overly ambitious game ever. (research thread)

So I started playing Soul Reaver on PS1 classics now that I found out you can set the controls for analogue.

Damn, I don't even know where to go at times. I just got past what I think is the 3rd checkpoint in this first castle... and I see this passage way blocked by a grill wall, no door and I have no idea how to go ahead. I explored more around this area in both the spirit and real world and I have no idea how to progress :(

I don't know if it's genuinely vague or if I've become conditioned to having games holding my hands and stupider than my 10 year old self.

Did you know that The Elder God gives you indications in his chamber? Stand on that shiny stone and he'll tell you what to do.!

Amazing thread for a great game. I remember beating the game and getting the 'To Be Continued' at the end. It soured me pretty bad and I never looked into the sequels as a result. Did the story get wrapped up in the following games? Were they any good?

Ooh. This game is on GOG?

So bought

edit: having problems with the GOG. They charged me twice and refunded me once. Game hasn't been added to account yet. WTF

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Never played this game. I remember seeing it on the shelf when I was younger; and I've certainly heard of it... but I've never had a chance to even mess with it.

Any game that can push someone to make an OP as detailed as this one, is worthy of me playing. So, just ordered! Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the recommendation, OP!

Dreamcast version, awesome. That's how I played it and it is still one of my favorite gaming experiences.

Easily my favorite franchise is gaming and part of me would love to see it return. Yet with that said, the other part of me hopes it stays dead and buried (outside of an HD collection). I have no faith in anyone to bring this franchise back without fucking it all up. I have even less faith in gamers to actually buy it.

And if there's ever an HD Collection with all the Legacy Of Kain games on it (yeah, right), they better use the Dreamcast version of Soul Reaver.

I believe this was the best version. I would still play it if only I could find the damn disc again :(

Soul Reaver was one of my favorite games from that era. It was amazing from the concepts to the gameplay to the design. It's tragic to find out there was so much missing from it.

I never played much of Soul Reaver 2, how much did they pick up on where they left off?

side note: This is one of my favorite pictures of all time, it's by Joe Madureira and it was a cover to an issue of PSM way back in the day.

All these SR threads of late. So much nostalgia. I was crazy hyped for this back in the day as I loved BO:LOK. I remember going to the official website and downloading four zip files each containing an avi file that was the opening FMV of the game. The glory days of 56K. That AVI file was WIP too so the final version that appeared in the game had additional effects that were not present in that version.

These threads looking back make me wonder how Soul Reaver would be thought on in the land of 2012's pre release hype machine. The pitch for the game was to replace the main character and take a dramatic shift in gameply style as well. Not to mention the whole business with Silicon Knights. I wonder if the internet would be as forgiving of this now.

Mama...I love your threads.

I love this game more than I love your threads. I love this game even though it abused me and completely left me hanging.

Me too. I remember there being images and talk about Turel, the vampire cult and its priestess, and the possession ability. Imagine my disappointment when neither of those were in the game. I remember having a WTF moment when the game ended abruptly, and I hadn't experienced none of those things described in the magazine.

I might have to play these series once, just to see what the fuss is all about. Do I play all Legacy of Kain games? Or just Soul Reaver subseries?

The perfect way to play would be to start with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. Its often mistakenly called a Diablo-esque game but this is inaccurate - its more of a top-down Link to the Past clone, with a darker artstyle, legitimately magnificent voice acting and writing, and some really moody music, SFX and environments. Its also quite wildly unpredictable - the game doesn't follow established genre conventions of repeated solving of massive dungeons for power ups, ice/fire/plant/desert cliches, etc. Its not ugly either.

The main problem is that the game was released with terrible, terrible loading times. These were massively reduced in the PC release (alas not on GOG), and my understanding is that they are somewhat improved in the PSN release.

You can thoroughly enjoy Soul Reaver having not played Blood Omen. But if you play Blood Omen first, the locations, artifacts and characters of Soul Reaver take on a whole new significance. It goes from being an doomed alien world, to the burnt out husk of a tragically familiar one.

This video shows you the unique mix of Zelda-esque gameplay and story-advancing FMVs in Blood Omen. It will give you an idea if you think its the type of game you would enjoy:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMAaLasMzes&feature=player_detailpage#t=228s

The ideal sequence is Blood Omen -> Soul Reaver -> Soul Reaver 2 -> Defiance. Blood Omen 2 can be comfortably missed out, its for die-hards only due to inconsistent quality.

I would like to play this game. Which is the best platform to play it on? Dreamcast?

Probably, though the PC version is no slouch - much higher resolution than Dreamcast, but not quite as nice textures (though they filter well).

It did non-linear open 3D Metroid level designs before Metroid Prime ever did.

Both Soul Reaver, and Exhumed on the Sega Saturn, are the two games I consider to be the direct predecessors to the magnificent Metroid Prime.

BUT the gameplay of every Soul Reaver is pure fucking garbage.

Can you elaborate - I really really do not understand where you are coming from here - it would be like someone telling me that Metroid Prime itself was "pure fucking garbage", its such a blanket statement that I can't even internalise it. Please help me by explaining.

I'd love to have a Soul Reaver remake when you are given the choice of following the storyline or just go with the original vampire killing story.

As unlikely as it would be, I'd bloody love this.

I'm interested in playing the Soul Reaver/Kain series, should I get the games off PSN or GoG?

I'd recommend PC, for the reasons earlier explained - it looks a lot better than the PS1 release. You won't go wrong with either though.

Geez. Amazing wealth of info in the OP. I've mostly enjoyed Uncharted as a diversion, but it comes across as really shallow (albeit gorgeous) compared to the rich LoK world. I'd love to see a new Soul Reaver game now that game engines can finally do that amazing conceptual artwork justice

Yeah, Uncharted is a really different style of writing for Amy Hennig, and not one that uses her incredible strengths as well as the Kain games did - in my opinion.

Never played Soul Reaver 2 (was waiting for the DC version :( ), did it not answer questions from the first game?

Between it and Legacy of Kain: Defiance, a lot of questions are answered, yes. There are also questions that are less overt - like the purpose behind Raziel's supposed God, the nature of time itself, Kain's masterplan, Raziel's past lives and other themes that are explored through time-travel and fantastic storytelling. Soul Reaver 2 in particular is completely captivating in terms of revelations for questions raised in previous games.

as if you made it to the citadel without ever killing? a human the residents and guards wouldn't attack Raz

More than that, they come to worship Raziel and kneel towards him as a God.

yeah me too, I've been interested for a while. I dont really know where to start though. What's the chronology? Is it best to follow that or is there a better path through them

The order of release is meant to be the order of play: Blood Omen -> Soul Reaver -> Soul Reaver 2 -> Blood Omen 2 -> Defiance.

In-universe chronology is different. It sort of goes Soul Reaver 2 -> Blood Omen -> Defiance -> Soul Reaver -> Soul Reaver 2 - > Blood Omen + Defiance -> Blood Omen 2 -> Soul Reaver 2 -> Soul Reaver. TIME TRAVEL EVERYWHERE.

Frankly, the chronology of the universe will make best sense if you play them in order of release.

Answer the next page of comments in a bit.

I know soul reaver 1 is available for the PC, Dreamcast and PS1 but are 2 and defiance available for PC as well?

Every game was released on pc but can be hard to find. GOG only has Soul Reaver 1, Soul Reaver 2, and Defiance. For some reason they don't have blood omen 1 or 2 up but they were both released on pc.

Edit: Does anyone know how to get a gamepad working for soul reaver 1 for pc? My 360 controller won't work with it, is there another controller/program I should use to fix it? It sucks used arrow keys since you lose the diagonals, it's painful to play because of it.

How does Soul Reaver 2 play with mouse and keyboard? I've been wanting to play it ever since I got SR1 on PSN and read MamaRobotnik's high praise of it but had no idea it was on GOG until this thread.

So I never played the second game despite adoring the first one. Did they carry over a lot of their plans and proposed ideas(Story and Gameplay)?

The first was a technical marvel on PSone. Great looking game and the streaming was incredible. The series sort of dropped off for me after that. Don't know why, but I never played part 2. I'd say they should bring the series back but with how that works I doubt they could recapture the magic.

Lets say I have access to every version of the game, what is the absolutely best way of playing it?

Im assuming an emulated copy of the Dreamcast version since the textures are better than PC and you can force Widescreen HD framebuffer???

How good is the GOG version?

Thanks for this thread, Mama. When I think back to when I was huge and devoted Soul Reaver fan it feels like such a dim ancient memory. Over the years I've seen tidbits here and there of its cut content. Nice to have it all in one place. The games as it was was so awesome, it's hard to wrap my head around how much more awesome it could have been. I've played through SR1 a ton of times, but it's been many years since the last. I believe you have inspired me to grab it off PSN tonight when I get home.

Crystal Dynamics better not screw up the reboot, if that's what they are making. This thread reminds me of how good those games were.

Love how Mama Robotnik delivers better Video Game Journalism than actual video game journalists.

Not all game journalism is bad, but it would be nice to have more purely investigative pieces like this.

Any game website/publication would instantly get my support if they published something like this. Good work Robotnik.

Once again, thanks for all the information Mama Robotnik. Pretty much lost count of how many threads of yours I've read about this game. Even without all this, what an amazing game it was back then.

(R.I.P. Tony Jay)

Indeed. I think if we do have a reboot, who would voice the Elder God again? My bet is on Earl Boen as he replaced Tony to voice Terenas in World of Warcraft. They sound very alike.

Someone really should petition Square and Crystal to bring this back in an HD director's cut.

Yes I would rather see more new IPs, bla etc, but who really begrudges studios money-spinning updates to classic games while the economy is so unfavourable? I'd rather see the likes of the ICO collection and Halo Anniversary for the next few years than more studios bankrupted by chancing new ideas.

Great information on Soul Reaver, but the title
itself seems subjective and unfounded. What makes it the "most overly ambitious game", things from the cutting room floor? We could find similar cut or proposed material for any game. Still hard to argue Soul Reaver is a bigger concept than something like Grand Theft Auto 4 or Oblivion.

great thread, but this is absolutely nothing new in games. Most games have a shitload of content cut, and it's usually the best stuff ;(

Would love to see a reboot of the series.. Great Post. I forgot how epic the Blood Omen storyline was. My roommate was a fanatic about those games back in the days.

More responses, sorry about the delay.

Breaking the horizontal scroll makes it hard to read such a huge and informative post.

I've fixed this now, sorry.

I played a good bit of Soul Reaver, but it didn't grab me like it grabbed (apparently) everybody else. I could only slide so many boxes around.

Yeah, the overuse of block puzzles is a weakness, there is about a dozen in the game. I simply aim just to get them over with straight away so they don't interfere with further exploration, but they are the one element of the game design that has aged most inelegantly.

Right now, I'm playing Darksiders II and many times makes me wish for a new Soul Reaver game, with up to date graphics, awesome art style and unmatched voice acting and story!

I've heard many good things about the Darksiders games from many LOK fans - I should probably give them a look at some point.

Be good to see someone do a thread like this but on Shenmue .....

It would be very difficult. Many western developers are happy to advertise their works on portfolio websites, years after (I imagine) the NDAs have expired. Such websites are reasonably challenging to track down though, I've gone through a lot of search engines and a hell of a lot of keyword permutations to find the stuff in this thread, the stuff in in my Metroid threads and in all my research into Legacy of Kain: The Dark Prophecy. Its a somewhat persistent process to do all of this in English, so I can't imagine how challenging it would be to do in Japanese. Not to mention, and I don't mean to generalise, but it appears that eastern developers are somewhat less enthusiastic in advertising their concept and modelling skills on personal portfolio websites. At least, I've seen very few who do, compared to the sheer smorgasbord of Western-talent portfolio websites out there.

Its a shame of course, because I'd love to look into the development of Majora's Mask, or Metroid Zero Mission, or Final Fantasy IX, with this level of scrutiny.

How's the PC version? I noticed on GOG for a decent price, and I may just bite.

If you apply this patch, it runs in HD, widescreen at a solid 60FPS. The screenshots on the previous page will indicate how it looks (I think pretty good for a game designed for a 2MB console - the texture filtering helps!). I'd suggest its worth a look, but I'm biased.

Epic thread dude.

As much as the cut ending intrigue's me. I am glad the squeals were made while keeping in mind what was originally cut.

That ending does sounds fantastic but a bit too final.

Since I made this thread, Daniel Cabuco has answered more questions about the intended story and ending. It ads a bit of depth to it:

We've learned from deleted audio and other sources that in the initial SR1 conclusion, Raziel was to ultimately kill Kain and open the pipes of the Silenced Cathedral to kill all the vampires. No time travel apparently involved and this conclusion appeared quite final. I was wondering if the team had planned to adress the origin of the Soul Reaver one way or another in SR1 (or in an in a "different" SR2 ?). Had the Wraith Blade always been thought as being Raziel's soul, or did the idea come during SR2 ? If that was the case, was there a different explanation as to why the Soul Reaver broke when Kain used it on Raziel in SR1 ?

When the scene first played out, I asked Amy why it broke on Raziel. She explained that 'you can't reave your own soul'. That made sense to me. Somehow she had always planned for Raziel to be inside the reaver, and probably would have addressed it in the next game in some meaningful way. There wasn't a different explanation for the Soul Reaver as far as I know.

Still about the original SR1 conclusion, Kain's motivations appear to differ from what we've seen in SR2 (originally, Kain seemed ready to die at Raziel's hand, apparently letting him kill all vampires with the sound pipes). Could you elaborate on Kain's original intentions before the ending was cut ?

Kain saw his empire as a failure after a milennia of trying to forge it. He witnessed the devolution of his children, and the loss of his empire. Ann Rice always had a nice theory about few people having the 'stamina for immortality'. Kain was much more tragic in the original ending, having forseen much in the Chronoplast.I think he saw the inevitablity of it all, and was ready to go. But he wanted to set Raziel on a path first...

Now this is about BO1, so I will understand if you don't have an anwser for that, but... in BO1, when Kain traveled back through time, the only weapon that could kill William the Just was the Soul Reaver. Was it already planned by Sillicon Knights that 2 incarnations of the Reaver could create a paradox (and the idea was carried on in SR2) ?

No the Paradox was created to help explain some of the inconsistencies of BO2, and to create the ability to change fate. It was entirely Amy's creation: she found a way to use coincidences in BO as a way to explain the ability to change time. I thought it was a brilliant solution!

Related to SR2: so in the ending cutscene, the Wraith Blade leaves Raziel's arm, then does it already go inside the Reaver, or is it just coiling on the Reaver (as it did with William's Reaver earlier in the game) and then it turns the blade against Raziel, so as to restore the empty blade to its "original" (in the Wraith Blade's "mind") state ? I never really understood how Raziel's soul is transfered inside the Reaver...

The weaving was to show that a tether existed, anchoring Raziel to the blade. It's a prison, made to house Raziel's soul and consciousness. The Anchor would set, preventing Raz from letting go to the blade, then draw him into itself. In that moment, when he is both inside and outside the blade (anchored and passing into it), a time paradox exists the same as when 2 Soul Reavers cross. The blade would absorb and house him into itself. From then on, whenever the blade struck an enemy as the Soul Reaver (as opposed to the Blood Reaver) it would devour the soul of whomever it killed.

Thank you again for the opportunity you gives us of having our most burning questions answered ;) Also, don't get me wrong if I'm interested in SR1's original ending, I still think the actual ending was brilliant, and so was SR2 !

Thanks! There was a lot of unique challenges to making the SR series, but I think, despite all the changes, it turned out for the best. Necessity sometimes begets creative brilliance, and at every turn we strove to create a fun, intellectual experience that was coherent. I can't really imagine the series ending differently than it did.

wait..so if kain were to try and kill Janos(hypothetically) the reaver would just stop working the minute it would touch his "friend"?

Nope. Raziel is just a ravenous, insane soul. He needs to feed and doesn't care who he hits. I don't believe he's fully conscious in the blade.. living and somewhat sentient. If Kain hit Janos with it, and killed him, Raziel would consume his soul.

There are more answers at the linked site and they keep coming all the time - very interesting for fans of the series.

You make some of my favorite threads, MamaRobotnik. Gotta play through this series once I clean up my backlog. I'll start with Blood Omen once the Vita is patched to play ps1 classics :) Or do y'all recommend the GOG route?

It depends of if you prefer portable or desktop more than anything I suppose. I lean towards the PC releases as Soul Reaver looks considerably better, and when you have completed it you can download patches from thelostworlds.net to allow access to a debug menu, and enable exploration of some remnants of the cut areas and powers.

The intro blew my mind. It felt so mature and advance for the time. I think I'll replay it sometime later this week.

The amount of detail that went into THAT intro is still mind-boggling to this day. The brothers, who you only see for mere seconds, and the environment were rendered with a near-obsessive level of detail:

Sorry about all the images, but it really shows how even after thirteen years, the work still holds up.

Weren't there ways (cheats?) to unlock the different reavers in the game? I remember using the yellow one on the dreamcast, but I also remember it only being a cosmetic change.

This tool allows access to the Crystal Dynamics Debug Menu in the PC release, allowing access to the superficial elements of the cut reavers - ie the change in colour/appearance but none of the cool cut powers. It can also enable cut abilities like Shift at Will.

I was really disappointed with how blood omen 2 turned out. Not just talking about how it was by far the weakest game in the series, but because of what the early game was shaping up to be. I remember reading an early EGM article talking about how blood omen 2 was going to be kain stuck in this giant city in a free roam game, where you had to stick to the shadows and lure people to alley ways to feed on them. An open world vampire game set in the legacy of kain universe? Sign me up!

The perspective of a Soul Reaver lead on Blood Omen 2 is very interesting: http://www.dcabdesign.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=143 The BO2 team just did what the heck they wanted to, regardless of plot holes, the developing story, the character of Kain, and the themes and recurring motifs of the series. It has some fun bosses and some nice music though, and the Eternal Prison is pretty cool. It did a LOT of harm to the franchise though.

Is SR2 available on PSN in any region?

Its a PS2 game, so its most likely chance of being playable on a non backwards compatible Playstation would be a HD rerelease.

Interestingly, Soul Reaver 2 actually started life as a PS1 game:

ObzFu.jpg

Until it was changed platforms to the PS2, with massive benefit to the animations, models and environment:

DAAAMN Mama. Between your Soul Reaver Lunacy and my MGS obsession we would be great cellmates in a padded room

Haha, I'd love to explore the fantastic MGS3 with this level of scrutiny.

That is a truly fascinating write up Mama. What is the story with the sequel? I never played the second game. Did they just put all the story arcs they had planned on the cutting room floor as well?

No, they changed tack massively with the story for Soul Reaver 2, and the result was entirely for the best. Soul Reaver 2 is the best story in the LOK series, and its interesting to visit areas in multiple time periods and see Crystal's fantastic artistry at work.

Some of the broader ideas (like the lost brother, a subterranean temple, Ariel's "Reaver", Demons, Winged Vampires) that were cut from SR1, appear in SR2 and Defiance but in some cases massively reinterpreted. Again, its for the best. Kain goes from suicidal tyrant to a vampire Doctor Who, returning to the anti-hero role he had in Blood Omen. After completing SR1, I found SR2 to be absolutely essential.

Right, final page of responses shortly.

Yes, and Yes.

Any game that can push someone to make an OP as detailed as this one, is worthy of me playing. So, just ordered! Can't wait to try it out. Thanks for the recommendation, OP!

Hope you enjoy it, I'd be curious how it holds up to the sensibilities of contemporary gamers.

Truly an astounding version of what vampires could aspire to be in fantasy

Yeah, I'm normally not into vampire things - though I did enjoy Buffy and Angel mainly for the comedy - but LOK's take on the creatures is pretty unique for games. A cathedral of insect-vampires with humans cocooned in webs, while the progenitor of the subspecies is growing into the spires like a mass of expansive flesh, is certainly a fun take on vampirism.

Every game was released on pc but can be hard to find. GOG only has Soul Reaver 1, Soul Reaver 2, and Defiance. For some reason they don't have blood omen 1 or 2 up but they were both released on pc.

Scitek explains how to make the control pad work, here. Its pretty quick to do.

First of all, I put "may have been". Second of all, "overly ambitious" connotes that the game was too ambitions for its own good. Third of all, how can my claim be completely "unfounded" when I have cited so much evidence. You disagree, that's fine, opinions are awesome. But to say my assertion is entirely unfounded seems dismissive to the point of condescension.

Some of it is absolutely new in the sense that some of the images I found, first published here, are now being added to the Legacy of Kain wiki as new discoveries. I thought was certainly worth the OP.

I know games have a lot of cut stuff, but its rare to be able to come across as much of it as I have here, or as I did in the Metroid Prime threads.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. I'll keep threads like this coming when make more discoveries, Kain related, Metroid related, or otherwise.

What's the PSOne version like? I only ever played on Dreamcast but am considering picking it up on PSN for Vita.

Works very well, I'd suggest you to pick up both Blood Omen and Soul Reaver on PS Vita, they look very good on it IMHO. PSOne game sin general look quite neat on PS Vita :).

I bought the game off GOG after skimming the OP (didn't want to spoil too much), then I got to the 5th block puzzle in a row in the Cathedral and quit. I'll give it another shot tonight.
