One of my favorite students wants to be a mangaka. She's still in junior high, but I told her I support her and her dream 100% and if she ever wanted to talk or needed help, to come to me. She looked like she was gonna cry. I don't think anybody's ever told her that!

She be guud at the arts. I think she draws doujin as well.

That's an adorable story. It's a shame that simple support is something she doesn't seem to get a lot of though...

You'd be surprised at how little support kids like that will get sometimes, especially from their family (tiger moms, a-sian not b-sian, etc). Probably meant a lot to her.

You're Under Arrest OVA 1

Now this is more like it, after the somewhat disappointing R.O.D. OVA. The characters are likeable right from the start, and unlike R.O.D., there's no awkward drama built around a goofy premise to mar the great production. So much wonderful car and background animation, a real joy to see. The plot for this first episode was exactly what it should have been, a fun romp to introduce the viewers to the characters and show, and give a glimpse of what to expect from the series.

It's hard for kids here sometimes, especially when they have dreams that are considered outside of the norm.

As the outsider in their life so to speak, all I can ever hope to do is try to let them know that they're not alone. I tend to tell them about how I was formerly a paid entertainment/film/anime journalist because it shows them that there are people out there doing what they love.

She's been saying she wanted to be a mangaka since she was 12, and now that she's 15 and still working at it, I'm inclined to believe her 100%. Kids gotta decide pretty quickly around these parts.

Of course, the teachers would probably scold me hardcore if they found out I was telling students shit like that. XD

Looking forward to the hit anime adaptation in 15 years.

Eh, I wasn't really feeling this ending. The show had been carefully and organically building up character development and subplots, only to suddenly throw that all out for forced, artificial drama. The way the new character was thrown into the mix and the behind-the-scenes machinations that surrounded her appearance were unbelievable. The events felt rushed and the dramatic climax was frankly silly, and not in a good way. Although
Tamaki throwing himself off the bridge into Haruhi's arms was suitably romantic.
It was good that they tried to tie it into Tamaki and Kyoya's family situations - certainly the backstory episode immediately prior to this was quite well done - but the contrived nature of the scenario prevented them from drawing the proper emotional impact out of those situations. I did like the silhouettes in Tamaki's backstory sequence in episode 25 - shades of Utena there.

Apparently this ending is anime-original and it shows. Not as problematic as some BONES endings, certainly, but still not as satisfying as it should have been.

Other than that, I really like the show. The characters are colorful and charming. The comedy is well-timed and consistently successful. The storyboarding is generally creative, and the visuals as lively as they should be. The weak digital art does end up holding the show back, unfortunately - as much as CG is the big pariah around here, I think the stark blandness of the early digital look is a bigger pet peeve for myself. That did seem to get a bit better during the latter half the show, though.

Overall, a well-made show which I had tons of fun with and would certainly recommend to anyone, with a caveat about the end.

So messed up. It's hard to believe that there are people out there who can tell a kid to give up on their dreams with a straight face.

Stories like these make me regret giving up on being a teacher, but then I remember that I probably would have been terrible.

Whenever I have to give a closing/goodbye speech, I tend to reference anime/manga monologues about dreams and friendship etc. So I'll end up talking about following your dreams and afterwards the teachers'll be like "That was a very American speech! We would never say anything like that!"

So I respond with a sad face and high five the closest kid. >.>

It's Japan/Asia. Telling someone you want to be an artist is like telling someone you want to commit career/life suicide. :p

I had a few teachers in high school that basically said as much, and one that even went as far as to say "face it, you're a bunch of kids in a poor rural school and you're never going to amount to anything in life so at least become a teacher like me so you can be tenured and guaranteed some form of employment." While I imagine that unconventional career paths are extremely strongly discouraged in Japan compared to most other westernized civilizations, it does happen elsewhere.

I went to college to be a teacher and I've been unemployed since the moment I graduated, over two years ago. FML

Hidamari Sketch x365 2

Okay, it would seem the first episode has spoiled me from all future "wideface". It was too potent.

The character animation has returned to normal. Yet, it's still an overall visual improvement from the first season.

Chika is texting Yuno about being nervous about her exam results. Spoiler:
She passed.
Sae gives her sister support, but is embarrassed to show her more nurturing nature (per usual).

The first half was about Chika, so I didn't like it. In the second half, they take a look back at the previous episode (or the day that it took place on) when the pairs met. This was better.

And. then. Chika. is. focused. on. again.

Don't do this to me, Hidamari.

At least, the Principal getting hyper over getting Valentine chocolates was fun. Additionally, there's some Hiro weight conscious jokes and reactions added in for a chuckle.

The episode was okay. It sure slapped me back to reality coming off of the first.

Fantastic Children Episode 10

Ah, so that's what the swing signified when shown in the earlier episode. I like how the use of sound in this scene mirrored that of when it was shown earlier. There is no music, just the sound of the swing creaking and Agi singing to his sister to help relieve her sadness. Agi's singing has a soft echo to it and the background disappears with the two of them looking at each other as if to show that the only thing that matters or is important in the world right then, right at that time is the two of them. The way Agi's singing transitions into Origa singing the ending theme complete with the music fading in and the visuals coming back to the present time was really nice. Honestly the episode could have ended there but the way in which it actually finishes is a nice stopping point too.

Fantastic Children Episode 11

Personally I feel like the extremity with which the show uses reactions are kind of hit and miss. In the first episode with Palza's body language of his body trembling and being wide eyed complete with his breathing becoming louder and more labored, followed by his hysterical screaming all in combination with the music and sound effects in the scene, I felt this really clearly telegraphed the intense feelings of fear of this character. So extreme were they that they felt really raw or primal in their intensity.

Something like the scene in episode 11 with Gherta meeting with Dumas though felt honestly a bit almost melodramatic and overdone with her reactions. It almost felt like she was overacting and it just didn't resonate the same way with me. There are other scenes where the characters display an intense amount of shock and in the context of the scene or character histories sometimes it seems appropriate but other times it just seems a bit overdone to me.

Fantastic Children Episode 12

Basically the plot revelation at the end was obvious but it's nice to have it out in the open now.

----

I also quickly wanted to say that I like how this show presents it's title cards near the beginning of the episodes.

Story wise I still wonder about the children's weapons and how they work
when Chitto was swinging it through the fauna it passed right through as if it wasn't even there yet in the second episode Soreto was using her sword to break the lights. Does that mean that they only harm inanimate objects and Enma? Hmm.

I'm really enjoying this show now and unless it really falls of the rails, which it doesn't sound like it does, I think I'll be joining duckroll, Jexhius and _Keiichi_ in recommending this show to others.

Being the teacher is like the worst thing ever. Career suicide.
Even here, with one of the strongest teaching unions in the world, teachers are facing a wage-freeze.

What are you talking about? Chika is great!

But if you really don't like her, you should be pleased to know that she doesn't show up in the rest of the season, except for maybe one cell phone call.

(And while nothing will top the first episode, there are some really good episodes to come.)

Yeah, the ending felt off. In circumstances like these I'd prefer a lack of one to what we got here. But the rest of the show was so enjoyable that it's easy to look past it.
Well, when you have to write a non-ending to accommodate the manga...

Bleach 210 - 213 rewatch dub

The part where Aizen was like, "You did not chose me, Hiroko, I chose you" was just cool. Aizen was was so good back in the turn back the pendulum arc. The filler set, Karakurizer after it too just because of Keigo Asano, and as usual Kon being silly.

In any case, looking forward to those future episodes!

Aww, you didn't like
Haruhi racing after Tamaki in the horse carriage with "Shissou" playing full blast in the background
? It's been a while since I've watched this show, and the last two episodes were kind of abrupt, but I thought that was pretty neat in the cheesiest way possible.

My sister's in a similar position. I'm trying to get her to get her substitute teaching license, but something about subbing makes her really anxious.

I could get my sub license, but I have family working in the local school system and I feel like I'll just be stealing work from them if I get my license too. It's kind of a shitty situation.

Sounds like a failed Madoka Magica. lol

Not even remotely. Even a terrible Meguca ripoff would likely have several times the entertainment value of this.

Hey, just remember that if you end up like the guy who went missing for like six months on gaf before turning up to say he was going to the gym, we wouldn't take six months to go internet detective on you. We'd take five and a half.
