So does the Wii U GamePad lack analog triggers? Does that matter?

… AND the Pro controller appears to have digital triggers too: http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/impressions/30454

Still don't know how to feel about this. I feel like I should be disappointed, but 95% of the time I'm using an analog stick as a squishy button, so meh. I don't think Wii U is going to attract many realistic racers, regardless.

Arcade racers benefit from it too. It limits the options of game design since anything that replicates using a throttle, or pressure, would now be gimped by having to use an analog stick or touchscreen.

This is pretty shitty news. Well, not news -- i read it before but yeah. This sucks.

This is a really weird choice, especially for the Pro controller.

Analog triggers are pretty standard, plus Gamecube games use them. I suppose they could devise some kind of workaround for VC Gamecube releases where depressing ZR and ZL simulate squeezing the analog trigger then reaching full depression, so you could "squirt" light presses out.

But it's surprisingly like the oddest design choice in the entire control system so far.

I'm a bit disappointed that it looks like the Gamepad will not have triggers but it's not a huge deal as like others have stated the biggest application of it these days in consoles is for racing games. I do like the tactile feel of a trigger though in shooters and stuff.

The thing I don't get is why Nintendo would just take analog out of their controllers. I mean they had analog triggers in the first classic controller for Wii and then removed them for the Classic Controller Pro.

Uhh, I don't think the first Wii Classic Controller had analog triggers. It had like SNES-like shoulder buttons, right?

I love how everyone just assumes there will be a GameCube VC.

Really. Nintendo cares so much about GC games they cut out BC from Wii.

Not that it matters. Most of the GC shit people care about is 1st party anyway, so Nintendo can just do HD remakes.

I don't like it either, but people demand it in every thread about next generation controllers.
The thing is, it's not an unnecessary demand. Racers require triggers, it's almost a pre-requisite. And what do they cost wholesale, $1-2 max? Same with the optical out, but those are probably like 50c.

No, I mean some people demand a return to all digital shoulder buttons like the DualShock 2 or CCPro. I don't get it either.

I am OK with the main pad not having triggers, but the Pro controller as well? Odd choice, to say the least. Don't like it, but guess I will have to deal with it.

Um, who said GC games would be on VC?

Nintendo.

I just don't see how some games are going to work.

I mean... Super Mario Sunshine without being able to control the water pressure of Fludd?

WTF?!

Those final models must be analog. Otherwise that is one huuuuuuuuge fuck up.

Wait, some people hate TRIGGERS?

They are pointless unless you play driving games, and they make other genres worse, namely games that require quick button taps (shooters, action games). It's why I prefer the way the dualshock controllers handled it.

Different strokes and all, though.

It is a big problem for GC games (were they to appear on the service), but honestly I'm just surprised that anyone was looking forward to playing a racing game other than Mario Kart on a Nintendo console.

And Mario Kart has never been built for analog acceleration, even on GC, where the analog triggers were quite substantial. Even F-Zero on the Gamecube (fan favorite, etc) used face buttons for acceleration, in order to allocate drifting to shoulders, and I would expect exactly the same from any Wii U iteration even if the analog capability returned.

No optical out, digital triggers, I know Ninty like to scrimp and save, but jeez. Playing racers properly will be interesting, analog buttons or tilt is a poor substitute for decent, tactile, analog triggers. I really can't see playing a Forza/GT kind of game on WiiU, a shame, as the hardware is more than capable by the sounds of it.

Are we sure analog triggers are more expensive?

I like triggers aesthetically but in racing games Im not sure I even use them the way people here seem to. There just isn't enough trigger for me to hold it half way. I always just feather it off and on just like I would with the X button on the PlayStation. Hell those PS2 pressure sensitive face buttons were the same way.

I might be remembering incorrectly/making shit up in my head, but don't you get digital buttons which can detect pressure? Didnt ps2 have that?

The price difference between two more digital switches and springs+potentiometers+assembly is not huge. This was probably a deliberate design decision rather than a cost cutting measure.

People like to make all kinds of dumbass assumptions about the Wii U.
Wii was hardware compatible with Gamecube and software compatible with all platforms up to and including N64. Wii U is hardware compatible with Wii, so expecting software compatibility with all platforms up to and including Gamecube doesn't exactly strike me as unreasonable.

True.

Still don't see how SMS and other games would work anyway without significant redesign.

They'll redirect the click function of the GC triggers to the additional shoulder buttons and move the z button to a stick click and you'll be shooting water full blast 100% of the time.

Or you just won't be playing GC games on wii u despite what some marketing strategist or whatever at Nintendo said in an off the cuff interview.

Hmmm, would be interesting to know the reason - from a neutral standpoint. People seem to always assume Nintendo do things just to spite consumers. They're not dumb and they spend tonne on R&D so Im sure they had their reasons.

The lack of optical audio is just inexcusable but analogue triggers? I will not miss them.

Yeah, GameCube games are coming through the WiiWare service, huh?

That person sure knows what she's talking about.

I guess this is just like that time when they said the Wii U would have achievements.
It does. They just aren't system wide.

Nor are they important in any way. Kind of like the concept in general. No point. Just dick measuring. And why dick measure in games when you can grab a ruler and do it yourself. Start at the taint for maximum exaggeration.

Do you really believe Nintendo would give up an opportunity to sell their old games at a high price?

There can't be much in it. It almost sounds like hubris on N's part, as if they are just dismissing the need. Granted, most of their first part games don't require analog triggers, but what about third party ports?

You know I'm talking about a system-wide achievements system. And you said it yourself: it doesn't have one. Even the Game Boy could have non system-wide achievements.

And it matters to many.

No which is why I said they would make control adjustments and sell them as hd remakes.

But I don't think they are going to woo third partys to get sphinx the mummy on GC VC or some shit.

The optical audio is also understandable: its a legacy connection and its unneeded. You can split the audio from HDMI very easily.

The analogy I've used in the thread on this subject is that you don't see pc's with VGA outputs anymore, do you? No. If you want to use that outdated connection then you have to buy an adaptor. Same situation here; you'll have to buy an adaptor to split the HDMI audio.

Small price to pay for progress imo.

It'll probably get it eventually through a firmware update. PS3 didn't have trophies to begin with.

So I can get Dolby Surround if I split the HDMI audio? The other thread says no.
