So does the Wii U GamePad lack analog triggers? Does that matter?

Played it at PAX and it I didn't even notice there were no triggers but I didn't play any shooters.

I'd prefer digital buttons with a shooter. A gummy trigger that shoots the same whether I tap it or floor it isn't any more realistic-feeling as a digital button… but it can be tiresome (especially on PS3's shitty convex triggers).

Unless they create a really good wheel mount with attachable pedals, this is a no go. I hated holding up the wheel in Mario Kart. It was not in anyway satisfying.

I like being able to sit back without holding the controller in the air while wagging it around like an idiot, thanks.

MS made a decent wireless wheel controller that only lacked the bumper buttons and it worked fine for Forza. You didn't really have to hold it in the air like an idiot either.

Add clicking analog sticks was far more important than the triggers being there. I don't recall having any problem playing racing games on the Wii.....

Racing on Wii, theres any what wasnt a watered down arcade version of the 360/Ps3 titles?
Ferrari Challenge was the closer thing to a sim that Wii had and was horrible to play with the Wiimote. You simply cant play good and enjoy a game like Forza/GT/PGR/Dirt/TDU without analog triggers or a wheel with pedals.

I always just jam the gas button down. Maybe that's why I generally end up sucking at racing games after the first hour or so.

That totally works for most of the arcade racing titles like need for speed, but not in sim games. It looks like only Sony and MS are making those anymore though.

It looks like it has Triggers, maybe Nintendo did a little bit of both?

how are you gonna properly accelerate in a game

In an arcade racer? Who gives a rat's ass about careful acceleration.

In a sim racer? Why would you play with a controller instead of with a wheel and pedals?

Outside of racers analog triggers are mostly garbage and a waste of what could have been two good buttons. I'm looking at my PS3 collection and not a single non-racer benefits from the use of analog trigger. Or uses the analog portion at all. Only thing they do is hinder. I don't think it matters at all that the Wii U doesn't have them. If anything it's a plus.

Alternatives...

A proper driving wheel with pedals

Right stick for acceleration/brake

Touch pad, move right thumb at the edge of screen, usual iOS controls

Gyro controls

Use your feet on balance board

It's not what we're used to but it'll work

How do you play Gamecube VC games without analog triggers? What the fuck, Nintendo?!

The same way the 360 handled OXbox games that used the OXbox controller's analog face buttons.

It'd be the normal trigger (probably simulate at least half way press) on R1 and L1 and the digital click on L2 and R2.

The touch screen is pressure sensitive especially the tip of it.

For racing games is anyone developing a force feedback racing wheel that is able to attach the gamepad so that the touch screen and buttons can be used at the same time? I would pay a lot of money for that.

I think the Pro Controller and Gamepad set up will be identical. If you look at the Wii U controller presentation ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyNSxIioOlM ), it shows the ZL and ZR depress at around the 1:55 mark. Seems pretty squishy for digital. I'm not necessarily holding out hope, but there is a possibility that it's just misinformation from booth people if current games simply aren't using the feature. The video even describes the buttons as "trigger like."

Oh, and one potential racing set-up: Right analog stick for gas, left analog stick for brake, and the gamepad gyro for steering (it's basically shaped like a steering wheel, after all!).
