31 Days of Horror 2 |OT| The October Movie Marathon

Hilbert

Deep into his 30th decade
But terrible in a silly 80s way (which is what I'm hoping for), or just terrible-boring?

I thought it was boring, but I also don't have much love for the silly 80 stuff, so who knows. I also prefer my bad horror to be played completely straight, for example I like Xtro more then Basket Case.

Hm. I haven't seen Xtro, but if the trailer is anything to go by, I'm the other way around.

Wish there was a cheap way to see Slumber Party Massacre II and III without having to buy the dvd. None of the rental outlets have copies :(

I'm glad I bought the DVD, I thought it was a great deal and I went into the series blind. I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of the Slumber Party Massacre II disc. I just need to figure out a way to trick my friends into watching it...

I might buy the discs for the heck of it, II is all I want really though. The original was a pretty poor slasher but II just looks awesome bad

You can get it for under $20 now, so it's not too bad even if you just want II. III isn't so hot, but it's worth watching to laugh at.

I just blind bought the Sorority House Massacre set too. Something tells me I'm gonna regret that though :(

jon bones

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
Currently watching Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. Dude's definitely the scariest of the Big Three and Lumus is the best Ahab. If only he had survived to act in the surprisingly excellent Halloween: H20

The Last Exorcism

I actually quite liked this one. Likable main character, and satisfying pay off.

Chernobyl Diaries started out with such promise too. Part of me would like for them to do a prequel/sequel to just to expand on the ending a bit.

It really is such a good setting - if the writers were even a bit more creative they could've pulled something interesting off. As it is, it's a complete bore.

I liked Beyond the Mask until it became more serious later on. Then it turns into shitty low grade slasher. The first half of the movie was great.

I thought the gradual change from Mockumentary into something more was brilliant. It had to happen, too - the whole movie just deconstructs horror tropes and then the last 3rd reconstructs them with a lot of love for the genre.

Thinking about buying The original Twilight Zone box set. Probably my favourite series ever.

If you like classic 80's slashers and haven't seen it, The Burning on Netflix is a good choice. Came after the slasher rush that F13th created but it got largely ignored and forgotten.

My issue is that the deconstruction was so well done, and then the turn into a really generic low grade slasher was just not that gradual in such an already short film. Frankly it's what I disliked about the Scream franchise, where it had a brilliant beginning and then the satire quickly faded as the series became exactly what it was poking fun at. The wit shown early on by these movies completely tossed out the window for just mediocre slasher material.

I'm definitely in, last year was a blast!

Question: Does watching 'The Walking Dead' Season 3 episodes (...or any new Horror TV show episodes) count towards our '31 Days of Horror'? ...I say 'YES'!

Oct. 14th 'The Walking Dead' season 3 premiere!

A friend and I are doing a horror movie podcast in October where we watch and talk about a different horror movie each week. Each episode will probably be 20-30 minutes long, five episodes total but if enough people like it we may continue doing it beyond October. So far we've decided on The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, V/H/S, and Halloween 3. Still trying to decide on one more movie. Any suggestions?

I'll post a link to the podcast after it goes up in case any of you are interested in checking it out.

The Burning is so much better than it has any right to be. Tom Savini was wise to do that film instead of F13th Part 2.

Sorry, TV series aren't counted (see OP). I'm sure we'll all be watching it, but this is a movie marathon.

Sounds cool. Send me a PM when it's up and I'll add it to the resources in the OP.

Looking forward to this! I do hope you all plan to watch these films properly. That is, your back to the door, deliberately left open. Roaming pets are optional.

Movie #6 - House 2: The Second Story

I didn't enjoy enjoy this one nearly as much as the first film. The film definitely abandons the horror elements inherent within its predecessor, and takes a much more comedic fantasy approach, a movie I feel hindered the successful formula quite a bit.

I did enjoy the characters within this film a lot more than the original; particurally Gramps (his great great grandfather that he digs up and awakens from his grave, his best friend and the repairman that comes into the film for about 10 minutes. I felt they were a bit more individualized, although the main character wasn't fleshed out compared to the protagonist within the first film.

The special effects were also hit and miss. The costume and set design was top notch, but the usage of stop animation for the dinosaurs and the undead horse were obviously outdated.

The narrative was all over the place, with a lot of the subplots being completely abandoned and unresolved, specifically the relationship between the protagonist and his girlfriend (Although I did enjoy the fact that they didn't get back together, that's a nice change of pace..)

I thought the last 15-20 minutes, minus the very end, were the best part of the movie considering the general tone of the film made a shift back to the original film. Gramps arch nemesis was easily the best villain within the film, and the filmmakers would have been better off threading him and his conflict with the protagonist's family through out the narrative, than having these characters jump in and out of ripped settings (Land of the Lost and The Temple of Doom).

It was still pretty entertaining overall, but definitely more of a family movie than the first.

I love House 2, it's just so goofy. Bill Maher's best work.

Does anyone know if Caché is closer to a horror/thriller. I know sometimes the genre classifications can be a little off when it comes to imdb. Just curious if anyone has seen it or not. Looking for something similar to Funny Games I'm hoping (had similar genres listed as Funny Games which was close enough to a horror movie for me)

Pure thriller from what I remember.

So I'm trying to pair my movies up into themes for double features and such, but I have no idea where to place these (I know almost nothing about the ones not listed as a rewatch).

Anyone have any idea of these share any themes? For example Anthropophagus is about cannibalism, so if any of these also feature that I'd like to watch them back to back.

- Halloween III: Season of the Witch (rewatch)
- The Living Dead Girl
- Killer Klowns from Outer Space (rewatch)
- Forbidden World
- Anthropophagus
- The Unholy
- C.H.U.D. II
- Slaughter High
- Happy Birthday to Me
- Society

Movie #7 - A Tale of Two Sisters
taleoftwosisters.jpg

Unfortunately, I had already seen the American remake, The Uninvited, before watching this film, so I already knew to be looking for a specific twist end. While there were some differences between this film's ending, and the American remake, it's similar enough where I was basically deconstructing the movie on the fly using the already known twist as a platform, which definitely effected my enjoyment a bit. But I certainly can't fault the film for that.

I actually enjoyed the film quite a bit. It's a lot less super natural than the American remake, and is a lot slower and more methodical with its narrative pace, a quality I love within my horror films. The music was appropriately atmospheric, but sort of par for the course as far as Korean cinema is concerned (somebody in Korea use something other than classical please). The camera work and cinematography was absolutely gorgeous, and went a long ways towards establishing an extremely unsettling feel through out the film.

The acting was top notch, particularly the step mother who had the ability to shift between moods, ranging from completely mundane and composed, to upbeat and hysterical, to completely fucking nuts, with the transitions seemingly coming off completely natural and unforced.

I found the ending to be a bit confusing and messy, although it did wrap up nicely at the very end. The 10 minutes proceeding that, jumping between stuff that may or may not be reality, reality and the past and present all without warning, was a bit... jarring, but the director manages to get back on track.

The film's definitely worth watching, it just sucks that my enjoyment was effected by watching the American remake, but as I said, that's no fault of the filmmaker.

Next up: Night of the Creeps.

Man, it's such a shame Fred Dekker didn't direct any more movies after RoboCop 3. Night of the Creeps and Monster Squad were so good!

Movie # 5 - House (1986)
ta1XR.jpg

I had so much fucking fun with this movie. The movie starts out relatively seriously and more inclined with hard line horror, but at the middle point of the film, it stops taking itself so seriously and improves considerably.

The awful Vietnam War flashbacks (William Katt as a Vietnam War vet is fucking hysterical in itself), the cheesy plastic looking monsters, the slapstick humor, the attempted juggling of drama and comedic horror, and the random as fuck soundtrack all just work. The movie is basically Room 1408 with a comedic twist and 80s sensibilities. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, he breaks his medicine cabinet mirror to reveal a portal to some other dimension? The whole fucking movie is ridiculous and awesome.

For anyone familiar with the franchise, is the sequel worth watching?

Hehe I loved this movie growing up.. I have very fond memories of sleeping over at my child-hood best friend's house and watching this.
I believe they made 3 or 4 of these.. I didn't see the sequel but I saw the 3rd one on HBO years ago. I'd say skip them.

The 3rd one is only a sequel in name, and the real 3rd film is apparently complete shit. I'm just going to stop with 2.

Probably a good idea.

I haven't seen Evil Dead 1 and 2 on many lists... that's a shame :(

+1 Trick R' Treat -- loved this movie.

Who in this thread hasn't seen those a million times already though? If the Blu-rays weren't so recent I'd consider a rewatch, but I just watched the new Evil Dead 2 BD last Nov.

Maybe next year I'll marathon all 3 (yes, I consider AoD a horror film).

I like the first 2/3rds of 28 Days Later the most, but I consider Weeks to be the more consistent film. I hate the last acts of Alex Garland films...

Yea so many movies I've seen so much already. For a marathon of films like this, rather see new stuff than too many repeats.

This is true. I'd still like to see it on a few "rewatch" lists then :)

Blurays for this series are already out?

If people are looking for something to watch let me suggest:

YellowBrickRoad

My wife and I watched it earlier this year (via Netfix) and while not all that scary it's one of the most disturbing movies I've seen in a long, long time. Possibly the best horror movie I've watched this year.

I will check this out.

Almost clicked 'play' on it twice but moved on.
I will take your suggestion, sir. :)

In North America:

1 for Evil Dead
2 for Evil Dead 2
1 for Army of Darkness

ED1 & ED2 (2nd release) are solid releases with plenty of extras and great video. AoD could use a re-release (and I'm sure we'll get one).
