The 15-year-old has not been seen since she failed to turn up on Friday at Bishop Bell C of E School in Eastbourne, Sussex, where 30-year-old Jeremy Forrest, an amateur singer, teaches.

Megan's mother Danielle Wilson and stepfather Martin Stammers spoke at a Sussex police press conference that was translated into French as detectives there search for Mr Forrest's black Ford Fiesta.

Holding back the tears, Ms Wilson said: 'Sweetheart, I don't care what you've done or why, I just want you home.'

Mr Stammers added: 'I just want you to come home safe and well. We are a family unit working together. Strength is coming from within.'

Both said that Megan's disappearance was 'so out of character'.

In a direct appeal to Mr Forrest, Sussex police Chief Inspector Jason Tingley said: 'Do the right thing and make contact with us.'

He added that return ferry tickets from Calais to Dover on Sunday had not been used.

Terry Boatwright, executive headteacher at Megan's school, expressed deep concern and shock at events.

'The thoughts and prayers of us all are with Megan and her family at this time,' he said.

'We would urge her to get in touch with her family to let them know she is OK and we would echo the police's call for anyone with information to contact them. Clearly, everyone's main concern is Megan's safe return home.'

Mr Boatwright added: 'As a matter of urgency, the school and local authority are investigating exactly what has happened before deciding what action needs to be taken.

'We are in close contact with police who are at a critical stage of their investigation and, for that reason, we cannot comment further at this stage.'

Police have released details of Mr Forrest's car, registration GJ09 RJO, in a bid to find the pair.

In May, under his stage name Jeremy Ayre, Mr Forrest wrote on his personal blog referring to a 'moral dilemma'.

'About a week ago I had a bit of a moral dilemma to deal with, both internally and externally. And the overriding question it left me with was this: How do we, and how should we, define what is right or wrong, acceptable or unacceptable?' he wrote.

'I came to a few different conclusions, mainly that actually we get a lot of things wrong, but at the end of the day I was satisfied that if you can look yourself in the mirror and know that, under all the front, that you are a good person, that should have faith in your own judgment.'

what does everyone think? she's nearly 16 but at the same time, the teacher should know better and it sounds like he fought with the decision of entering into this relationship. I feel sorry for her parents and hope she gets in touch with them and that the story doesn't take a sinister turn.

Kind of surprised by the framing of the story [directed not the OP but the news article]. In the U.S. we'd never say the student "ran away with" an older man. This would be kidnapping of a minor obviously against her will. Just interesting by comparison.

Shouldn't this be kidnapping or something similar?

She's 15. There's no way they can turn this around and present it as some kind of "unstoppable love story".

EDIT: really, Spain? How the hell.

the differences are interesting. I think they don't want to criminalize it in case they flee further but this will might result in a kidnapping charge but I can't say for sure as I don't know the ins and outs of the law regarding kids running away with adults.

IIRC 13 is only for relationships between minors. Otherwise is statutory rape.

That and a blinding beatdown from the kid's parents.

For you pervs wanting to go to Spain...

The age of consent in Spain is 13, as specified by the Spanish Penal Code, Article 181(2). However, if deceit is used in gaining the consent of a minor under 16 years an individual can be charged under Article 183(1) upon parental complaint.

This is interesting...

A new Criminal Code was introduced in 1995, which specified an age of consent of 12 under Article 181f for all sexual acts; and this was raised to 13 in 1999.

Young teens have sex. Its not really that big a deal. The Spanish government should be lauded for the attitude towards "minors" having sex.

Obviously its a problem when older people try to take advantage of the younger but afaik these laws only apply for 13-16 year olds. If you're a 25 year old caught with a 14 year old then its off to jail with you.
