I don't get it. Someone link me to what this is.

Well I am certainly a gamer, the ad sucks, I don't find it "offensive" though. Not sure how it could come across that way. It's just a really, really, lame ad.

Average Joe on the street:
Well that 3DS is neat, but it's not for me. I'm not a gamer.

Nintendo:
We're about everyone, not just gamers. See this new commercial emphasizing that we're not just for people calling themselves "gamers."

Gamer Interpretation:
BETRAYALTON!

at last, for christ's sake
I don't see what's wrong with it. It's about trying to get more people to buy their console, duh

This is their new marketing campaign targeted specifically at females.

Problem is...

they've mostly moved on to smartphone gaming.

Who the hell can seriously be offended by this? Are people mad because they don't want "outsiders" invading your hobby or something?

the small minority of GAF and the gaming "press" that are offended by this are losers. I am sorry, that is the only way to rationalize this. They are uptight mental cases that got ridiculed too much during their life, and their internet cred as a "hardcore gamer" is how they value their worth.

Why else would they be so angered by a non-gamer finding enjoyment in Mario?

Moved on would imply that they were there in the first place.

Fake edit: Wait a minute, Nintendo has a huge base of female gamers (in comparison), don't they?

Oh they were definitely there. Nintendo expanded a lot of their audience with the DS and titles like Nintendogs, Brain Age, etc which appealed more to females.

I'm certainly not offended by it, don't think anyone should be. I'm also not surprised either, have people been that blind to what Nintendo has been trying to do since the inception of Wii and the taking off of NDS and advent of Brain Age?? They concentrated to heavy on that "Blue Ocean" and they said they were trying to recommit to their core gamers but that never meant they were going to just ignore the casual crowd.

SMT

this show is not Breaking Bad why is it not Breaking Bad? it should be Breaking Bad dammit Breaking Bad
LOL, so now they're turning their backs on the people who made them rich?

Yeah, it was evident, I mean Skyword Sword wasn't a game, nor was it for gamers.

They are catering to casuals who say they aren't gamers but put in several hours on apps, COD, and Skyrim.

Woah, wait, the latter folk aren't gamers, watch out, I rarely play games, but I am a gamer. :D

nintendo's failure was not making them into longtime customers to keep them buying nintendo hardware for their games instead of doing their gaming elsewhere.

though i do wonder how would they have convinced these casuals to stick around. everyone seems to be unable to keep a hold of them.

Are people really allowing themselves to be offended at a Fox News quality contextual edit of what the commercial's dialog actually says?

For fuck's sake.
People who make threads that intentionally mislead to troll for angry responses should at least be grounds for a loss of thread-creating privileges. It's becoming a very common occurrence on GAF, and honestly I'm starting to lose the distinction between the posting quality here, and that of a place like GameFAQs. It's especially ironic when GAF is so keen to mock Kotaku's reporting ability.

EatChildren had the good sense to say that people who turn every Wii U thread into a hardware discussion will receive a ban. GAF could be more strict about these things, and it would be better for the forum.

Because they got places to go and people to see.

I think that's the thing about casuals... to generalize a bit... they always seem to be moving onto the next "new shiny thing". And that next new shiny thing happened to be tablets and smartphones.

I guess watched the ads differently.

It wasn't "I'm not a gamer"

But more gaming can turn me into an artist, an heroic plumber, a warrior... etc

But *Shrugs*

That's what I got from it. "Coin collecting champion" implied, to me, it was more than just gaming to her. Pretty good psych for an ad imo

Yeah, thats what I am getting too.

Plus, I never really cared for the title/stereotype of "gamer." I have been called it several times and respond to people by saying "watching movies and reading books don't make you a movier or booker."

Stupid term.

I dislike ads that try to glorify gaming as if it was something you have to totally be proud of and make it noticeable for other people, you don't see cinephiles, people who love collecting stuff or book readers saying how their hobbies glorify their lives and turns them into champions and whatnot (Well maybe book readers do but still), they'll just enjoy their hobby and discuss about it with other people who are also interested just like we do about "gaming".

Someone might direct me to Kevin Butler's E3 2010 speech but I think we all know how his character was supposed to act so while I found it weird and corny at first I enjoyed it and laughed later when he kept going on.

Good advertising exploits the need to feel special...

She basically said I'm not a gamer, I'm a full blown nerd. Being nerdy has been quite hipster and en vogue for a few years now

So nintendo finally realised they have lost the hardcore gaming market to iOs/Android. Took them long enough.

J/K. Please don't do anything mean to me!

Hilariously enough, GameFAQs threads, at least the ones in Non-stop Gaming, have been hilariously tame compared to GAF threads lately. If anything, they're laughing at gaffers due to overreaction.

That's how advertising goes, and believe me, this is far from the commercials that try to promote "gaming".

To be fair I don't really like or identify with the label of "gamer" myself

So not really offended

Neither do I for the most part. After all, that's why I'm on Gaf talking games; there isn't much of an outlet for it in my public life.

I think this thread is really missing the point... she says "Im not a gamer, Im a coin collecting champion". She goes from saying shes not a "gamer" to saying something much more involved. I think the point of that line was to just really focus people in on the new Coin Rush feature not that she wasn't a "gamer".

NITNENDO SAID NOT GAMER!! FUCK NINTENDO!! Really, way to take ad out of context internet nerds. Not sure why the term 'gamer' is a badge of honor for some of you either. Its really weird attitude to have.

"She's not a gamer," bellows Reginald Fils-Aime from his eight mouths, "And neither will be the rest of you!"

The warm smoky night is filled with the screams of gamers. The smell pleases Reggie.

Just looking at the tag line itself, it seems a bit glib and insincere, but the commercials don't really portray it that way.

I still probably would of went with a different slogan.

*cue "I am a gamer" ads from Sony/Microsoft*

Nintendo finally acknowledges not everyone can be a pro at synchronizing 10 finger movements on a wireless plastic controller.

A musician, say a violinist, executes very similar operations like gamers do:
- Hand and finger sync movement.
- Use of a script. The violinist uses a sheet of paper, we use an electronic display device, etc, etc, etc...

Being a gamer requires training, discipline. Nintendo is smart to separate us from the 'unworthy', afterall we are elite trained professionals.

lol

I found it so embarrassing a few years ago when I noticed people starting to call themselves gamers on the internet. Like its an exclusive club. It was so silly then, and still is.
