I just gave K a brief look. I think I've solved the mystery of the shows 'look'. It's not the worst digital production I've ever seen, after all I'm familiar with this:

This image is pretty indicative of how Mardock Scramble looks. Now let's take a look at K:

They sure look pretty similar, don't they? But what's the connection?

Studio GoHands. In fact, both works have:

Art Director: Masanobu Nomura and Director of Photography: Toru Fukushi. Can their reign of terror be stopped?

Meanwhile I'm questioning Japan's employment laws because "best" girl seems to be working at a late night bar while in secondary school. And not only that, she is wearing a very skimpy outfit. Oh Japan indeed.

I don't think the place is open all that late (it's a family restaurant), but (0verflow universe spoilers, doesn't come up in the TV series)
the guy who owns that restaurant chain--Makoto's father / Sekai's grandfather--has political connections, police in is pocket, etc. Can probably get away with anything.

That doesn't happen though. People keep praising Mardock Scramble for looking like a 'retro' OVA from the 90's, which couldn't be any further from the truth.
Wait, seriously? wow

By people do you mean ANN? If so, then I'm not really surprised.

She can shoot me anytime.

Pretty solid first episode. Wished there was more
girl beating the shit out of the boys
instead of vice versa, but oh well.

Evangeline Yamamoto~! You're so fine~!

Well, yes, but I've heard other people use the same line, which I find extremely confusing. Perhaps they've forgotten what anime used to look like?

Anime used to look like Dirty Pair and Gunsmith Cats. Anime has changed a lot.
The music, more importantly, has changed in a way that Im not wholly thrilled about either.

Just compare Nausicaä with Ponyo. Same composer, completely different styles.

That is certainly an interesting example, but not really that comparable since both shows have entirely different subject matter and probably slightly different age demographics.

Briefly watching the new Hayate no Gotoku episode again, I've finally figured out what it was about the humor in this episode that felt so off. I mean, the art and stuff felt off too and that's what I most noticed, but then it suddenly dawned on my why most of the humor fell flat this time.

No narrator.

I double-checked, and there was no Wakamoto narration. No wonder if felt off. >>;

Huh, this explains a lot.

Zetsuen no Tempest: The Civilization Blaster 01:

Damned solid opener. More than anything, the I think that the powerful, foreboding orchestral soundtrack relentlessly playing through the episode helped set the tone and give the events a gravity that they might not have had on their own. In combination with the bleak and biting winter atmosphere, it was the ideal stage for launching a quest for revenge. The animation quality was quite splendid, and the fight scene in particular was exceptionally so--it's something I'll want to watch several more times just to take in the details. After the first episode the series doesn't quite feel like battle shounen to me, but if that's the genre that it eventually ends up settling into, I'll have no complaints with action sequences this well-produced. Can't wait for more.

Definitely my favorite anime so far of the season that is not a continuing series. The writer must be applauded for the setting and plot feels really interesting and makes me wish to just know so much more about both the past and the present. The magic as presented here is actually quite cool and Mahiro's mastery of it is impressive. I hope Yoshino can get in on it too. I like the friendship they have for one another, its really nice and I hope to see it grow as they embark on this journey.

Maybe that's why it seemed fine to me. I consider the manga to be the main medium, and that obviously has no narrator.

It's definitely not a battle shounen, lol. It's more of a mystery thriller which... for whatever reason, happens to have a lot of action in it.

I rewatched Chuunibyo again because it was so damned cute. I think it has cheered me up from yesterday.
Kudos Kyo ani. Now off to work I go.

Man, I'm tempted to try Tempest (haw haw), but I keep reading that it devolves into some serious suckage. I don't wanna start liking a show just to watch it fall apart! D:

Not a bad start. Story feels a bit heavy handed at this point, but may not be a huge problem as it goes forward. Main character treads the line between that super depressed mopey lead and having some personality. I thought I was going to hate him in his first few scenes, but he's shown enough of a spirit for me not to have a huge issue by the end. I really like how he's willing to rush into fights he knows he has no hope of winning. He doesn't just sit back and let people trample him, the trait in MC's of his style that I hate the most.

Of corse, the animation is the real draw here. It's pretty stunning. Ever shot is meticulously designed to get the most out of how pretty the show is. The way the camera moves is very interesting, yet natural at the same time. It definitely seems they realize that the source material is not very well received and are going to eek out any enjoyment they possibly can out of the style. My only problem was the CGI used in the
bolder monster rising out of the sea
clashed with the art of the rest of the show. Particularly on the shot of breaking chains.

I guess the question is, am I going to stick with it? I'm not sure yet. If this first episode is any indication, it's going to be another show with an atmosphere of oppressive sadness. Given we already have Shinsekai Yori, I'm not sure I can take two shows oozing sadness.

Are there any other shows with filtered effects that you guys think actually looks good?

Fate/Zero.

LOL I Know "K" gonna be hit in here. Its looks awful as expected eh, when the first trailer out I thought its look cool and the color design just because the LQ video.. oh boy I was wrong.

More fodder for the end-of-thread food posts

Wow, this was pretty different from what I was expecting. There's a grand, theatrical quality present here, both in the sweeping and and dramatic visuals from Ando and the outstanding score by Oshima. It almost has the feel of an old-school Hollywood film from the middle of century, except for all the crazy anime stuff, lol. And the action scene was exceptionally well choreographed, as expected from Ando.

I am a bit concerned about what duckroll says about the story, especially with Mari Okada adapting this. And the main character seems a bit special. I mean, first he runs up and touches someone who seems to
have a horrible, possibly contagious disease. He also doesn't seem concerned about his loved ones until Mahiro mentions them.

Still, I'm in until the show crashes and burns, if that happens.

LOL I knew DTL would .gif that scene.

I don't think this show is trying to be subtle at all. I just hope it never goes full Mari Okada.

Art/animation was like night and day compared to the last episode. Pretty good too as it seems like it marks the transition from East Blue and the folk Luffy came in contact with to larger adventures. Consequently, the earlier eps feel a little more cohesive past the collect crewmember, beat someone's ass formula.

Happy Birthday indeed!

Alright first episode, I spent a good deal laughing during the second part when the guy was kicking ass in his mech while the two girls were about to yuri it up.

Looks like I won't be disappointed...
yuri-wise

So I started watching The Ambition of Oda Nobuna for some reason last night.

And... I actually kind of enjoyed it. The animation quality in the first couple of episodes was also pretty surprising. I have no idea what I'm in for at this point.

EDIT: GOD DAMMIT MOONSPEAK.
