Halo |OT10| The Calm Before The Storm

Man I've been reading Halogaf religiously since 2006, yet I only got a paid email and then an actual gaf account in 2009. It was so weird posting at first, because I loved all of you and knew everyone so well, yet I was just another unknown junior to everyone.

Spent 15 months lurking while waiting to be approved, and once I was finally approved I didn't want to actually post here for a long time.

Zoojoo probably should have used that strategy.

I was reading for a couple months, then I eventually signed up and was approved in a month. And now, I'm the coolest mother fucker here
I was approved in 2 days. I was literally shaking when I pressed Reply and the reply page showed up for the first time.

It's weird to me that I've been here half a decade. Like that is literally almost 1/4 of my life. What the hell, HaloGAF.

I'm looking through the Halo 3 thread now and it's depressing how much urk and Luke used to post back then.

TOO COOL FOR US NOW HUH?

Hahaha you have no idea the amount of villainy that goes on in that thread.

It's pretty incredible to be honest. You can get away with close to murder in there.

Nah, blackace did this for me so I could hide from NBA-GAF.

But the secret is out now as evidence of my tag. Haha.

Posts like this certainly didn't help.

Wow. I'm a huge sports fan but I tend to stay out of the sports threads just because I assumed they moved quickly and tempers could get high. The fact that you had to get a new account is funny.

I've only been here a little over a year. I lurked for a month or so and it only took me a week or so to get approved. That all happened sometime around that awesome EazyB/Starwolf match.

Is there a way to figure out your first post ever? I'm pretty sure it was in Halo-GAF 5 years ago...

The search only goes back through 20 pages of posts.

It would be fun to see it again...

My first post was in the Halo 3 thread asking if anybody wanted to play on the new Legendary Map Pack on the day they came out. I don't remember registering, but when the Ascendant Justice guys pointed me here, my browser automatically filled in my details.

I remember when people figured out how to do customs in the Beta that was crazy. I think that beta was pretty small but it wasn't too limited.

I think the Reach Beta had more players than Reach does today.

Those poor plebeians who needed the Crackdown disc to get in. All us cool kids got a code for it and could launch it from the dashboard. And laughed as the "button" to make it live for the Crackdown masses malfunctioned for most of the day.

On a quasi-related note, will we be able to fly the Banshee into space on Ragnarok? I remember getting into a custom game in the beta just to try that out.

There are preset locations on the map where the weapons will spawn but it will still randomly pick one of these locations. That's why not having a warning so both teams can properly set up is bad design in my opinion. (Honestly I think it shouldn't be random in the first place but that ship has sailed.) It creates an unfair advantage for one of the teams because they just happen to be in the right spot to grab a power weapon that happens to be spawning there. 343 calls it dynamic, I call it broken.
Agreed. A HUD warning would help the global ordnance system a lot.
We also don't know whether the times are random, right?
Pretty sure that times are static.

Times: static
Weapon: randomly selected from a list for the map and gametype
Location: randomly selected from a set number of locations for the map and gametype

Oh gosh I forgot about that. I actually ended up buying Crackdown a year or two ago few bucks because the demo was kind of fun. I don't remember how I got in. Wasn't there a play so many hours of Halo 2 lottery to get in?

Also the Halo 3 Beta felt more balanced than the actual retail release.

Nothing will ever top the Halo3Beta gamefuel commercial.
That ad still hypes me >to this day<.

I honestly didn't come to gaf much until the first mention of reach. started lurking, then figured i could actually get an account.

By the way, what's the average age around here?

Luke hangs out often with a good friend of mine in Dota2. My friend is a big deal in the dota2 community so I guess Luke wanted to be in with the cool people there lol.

Aww that's adorable lol
hehe 3 years of reading but without being able to post was no joke

I would guess somewhere in the mid twenties.

I don't remember how or when I found neogaf and became a registered member. I do remember getting a lengthy ban from Luke Smith on the bungie.net forums and coming over to neogaf asking if what I had said really deserved a ban. I think I called bungie a bunch of liars or something right before or sometime right after halo3 came out. I'm surprised people received me as well as they did, because I used to complain about halo3 non-stop. I was always a little sad that I didn't find neogaf sooner and get to know people during halo2 when i had much less to complain about. I seem to remember posting some moronic poem on here apologizing for the bungie.net incident... Hopefully that never comes to light again.

Personally the halo starry night comercial gets me pumped!

I remember when I tried to get approved for NeoGAF. I setup with my work email at first. I waited like a year to get approved. And then when I finally got approved it was after I had separated from the Air Force so I changed it to my email at my blog and it put me back into the approval process for 6 more months. I was sad. :(

I found GAF through some source citation on a gaming blog, I think. Before GAF, I posted in a few Livejournal gaming communities (lol) and Bungie.net, and I read 4 Color Rebellion a lot, too. GAF was cooler and considerably funnier. I didn't play games or read GAF consistently for my first several years on here, but since Reach came out, I've been doing both A LOT more. I'm pretty sure my posts per day has increased ten fold, haha.

Wow, that video brought back some memories. I remember doing that in the Beta as well. Also, I realized I was listening to Taylor Swift the whole time I have been reading this. Subliminal something or another.

One thing about the insta-kill barriers in H3 and the soft kill zones in Reach that I didn't like was how it limited map "exploration". I spent a ton of time breaking the invisible walls in Halo 2.

What is with all this Halo talk in here? Haven't you been out celebrating the NCSU victory?

Or was that just me?

-------
I've been toying with the idea of a "HaloGAF History" page at the website for a while. I think it's time to bring that to fruition. Tomorrow, perhaps.

Make sure you say that when I joined HaloGAF grew some credibility as a skilled group of players.

Ads featuring in-game footage plz.

Halo 2 ads >>>>>

Seriously, it would be a damn crime to not do in-game ads for Halo 4 for a couple of reasons. First, the game is just damn gorgeous, so why not show it off in your ads. Most people that buy the game aren't scrounging GAF for footage, they don't know what the game looks like or why they should give a shit. Second, which plays into the first reason quite a bit, is that Halo simply isn't the "it" game anymore, and if you make a live action ad, all it states is "Halo", and someone that hasn't touched Halo in 5 years isn't given a reason why they should consider getting the game.

Imagine a slow zoom-in on a picture of a ceiling tile. Ken Burns style.

Congrats to your Wolfpack, we played a debacle of a game. Unbelievable.

Thanks!

Really wish I had been at the stadium. Instead, I was watching on TV with some Virginia Tech friends - they got most of their entertainment from watching my despair turn into a nervous, cautious optimism that culminated in me leaping out of my chair.

You all can blame Sai Kun that I'm here. It was the advent of twitter and right when vidmasters released that I needed help and upon searching the trending topics found that kid, asked for help, and we finished it. Shortly after he would invite me to games and there were gaffers often sprinkled in (I remember Barrow specifically).

And also related, my buddies and I all lived in the fraternity house (surprise!) when Halo 3 was released and we watched all the ads on repeat the entire day leading us up to getting in line to wait. The consensus was that the Believe diorama ad was the best. of. all. time.

It is an interesting poem.

Where did you preorder Halo 4 from?

I remember my first interaction with Frank back in early '07 when the Halo 3 F&F Beta was going on. I was lurking HaloGAF at the time and sent him a PM on Bnet that went something like this:

"fuck you bitch for giving gaf early access to the beta why do you give them so much credit and love them more there's more people on the internet than gaf you bitch"
