Not really enjoying the Thursday War much - it still has too much random Halsey bitching and still has a pretty dull plodding story that seems to be going nowhere fast and its still wasting the few interesting moments.
Come back Nylund! Use a forerunner crystal to will Parangosky out of existence!
Man the Halo novels really have been hitting some pretty low dud's for the last 4 books or so.
Still within the first 100 pages, so theres a large area of potential improvement yet.

Got it through Tsilon promo codes. Them DLC maps are gonna have to be pretty fukken god to match up to the price of the game.
For a minute I thought you got the Halo 4 Xbox for 10 bucks.

1) Is the only way to get the full ODST armor for my xbox live avatar is to play through ODST and get certain achievements?

I'm willing to bet there are plenty of reasons why Halo doesn't use a system like this. Did those Far Cry maps ever make it into its multiplayer? Would it be more difficult to put custom maps into multiplayer? Is it User friendly and accessible to everyone?

2. For the time being yes, but in a recent bulletin it was said that there will be means of getting these bonuses elsewhere, just that they would stay exclusive for a while.

For the first three-quarters of the book, there's little-to-no Halsey bashing. In fact, it's much kinder to her than Glasslands. The point about (spoiler about two-hundred pages onward)
Halsey crying to herself about Miranda made me feel sorry for her.

iirc stinkles confirmed that custom pics can be done by developers, and it shows with the baked-in forge variants, but denied the capability of players being able to use it.
Just an idea about the elite japanese: these Storm faction guys aren't exactly on speaking terms with the entire Covenant. On top of different parts of Sanghelios having different languages/dialects, they could have invented a pidgin language to communicate with one another without having to worry about transmissions being picked up by enemies for all we know.

Humanity is evil because they chose to. While accepted halo canon explains humanity does what they have done because they had to. Even bears books suggest didact doesn't hate humans and understood why they became violent. He showed regret.

Humans attempting to stir a civil war? After they got their asses handed to them? Oh infinity is like a super ship? That's like1/100th the size of covy super carriers? The ship that was "designed for battle but repurposed for peace"? Oh humanity somehow succeeded in convincing the elites to have the super carriers dismantled? At the end of halo 3, you could plainly see that humanity was in no shape to have have ANY control over anybody. Oh humanity now have engineers on their side?
Oh humans now throw racial slurs out of the blue every other line? Of what's that? Jul finds some planet with a teleported out in the blue... Where they knew it was a portal... Where they do have limited contact but no one fucking investigates this shit? Wouldn't the teleporter count for an artifact and the hugarok would be going ape shit over this? What about the temples on sanghelios?
It's like they removed every piece of mystery in this vomit of a story
The whole religious subplot, ONI manipulation and didact being evil plots are being just casually thrown into the universe with absolutely no basis and just hoping people don't realize that it doesn't fit. Fuck even the bear novels, while poorly written still maintained congruency with the rest of the fiction

Parangosky has already made a bunch of random off hand comments. As a character it makes Parangosky extremely boring and limited, is she obsessed with Halsey?
Im not touching your spoiler as I havent read that far yet, but I have one of my own: they have already made it clear that
they dont trust her enough to help out on much of the tech going into the Infinity. Not that I care, but that entire segment could have been handled in a more interesting way, rather than just bullet point all the ways Halsey has been prisoned.
Lack of time for games, and a back log already piled up as it is. Month away from H4 I don't know if I could invest the time needed for ODST. I HAVE to complete Borderlands 2 before then in order to justify the purchase of it.
As long as you don't say you like it better than Tobias Buckell's, we're cool.

I still don't get you using Far Cry as a benchmark when there are obvious differences in the games and development philosophy behind what the teams are actually going for. Ubisoft wanted a full featured editor on consoles, Bungie (and now 343) wants more of a "build-a-map" approach rather than letting people build the entirety of the level from the ground up.
Entirely different philosophies. If you want a Far Cry editor, go play Far Cry. Yes, Forge has some downfalls, and there are things we ALL would like to see added (colors, as you mention more than I mention I want to work at 343) but it is not meant to be an entire map builder.

Also just saw the Halo 4 Terminal vid. Why the hell are Elites speaking in Japanese* now? I'm ok with all the visual changes but I swear if they talk like that in the game my faith is lost.

Nah, I agree. I miss the over the top action writing that Nylund excelled at, but otherwise, I like Traviss a little bit more.

Parangosky's entire trip to the Infinity consists of her coming up with new ways to torture Halsey.
I like her writing more but her opinions... Very hard to say whose books i like more.
Buckell's Halo novel is forgettable, i don't even remember its name. The Elite parts were interesting though. Wouldn't call it worse than Traviss' or Nylund's Halo novels though. They're all equally bad (still, kinda guilty pleasure).
Halsey's Journal is the best Halo book. Despite being Nylund's, i wouldn't have recognized it as Nylund's if i didn't know better. Guess he fits as journal writer.

I think you're overstating "a bunch", in the three-hundred pages I've read, there has been about four or five mentions of Halsey from Parangosky (certainly less than 10), and they're all a sentence or two, no more, and they're separated by pages and pages of other things Parangosky is doing. They're on the same ship, so it's natural – given the history between the two – that Halsey's going to cross her mind several times.
I'm more bothered by the Vaz's offhand comments about her, and even then, that's like once or twice. The book is a little more than a slight bother to me in this regard.

The only thing by Buckell I liked was Dirt.
Certain story choices aside I've found the majority of Traviss' characters far more interesting. The pacing of this trilogy leaves something to be desired however.

My main question with Forge is whether they've been able to improve framerates over the Reach incarnation for some of the busier maps. If the answer is yes, then I'll be plenty happy to play some Forge maps in MM, whether they're visually bland or not.
Hopefully for Next-Gen Halo. I love me some Forge but its still pretty basic. Don't be scared 343i! Console Gamers can handle all the big boy level editing stuff!
Hell, just give us a PC version and let is export to 360 format. DONE!
His shared world with Paolo Bacigalupi (The Alchemist and the Executioness) is really, really excellent. Keen eye, interesting point of view, swears like a sailor. I like the guy.

Humanity isn't black and white and it's never been portrayed as simple as that. You've been told the justifications characters have used in past stories, but you've never had the fuller picture.
Humans in this book aren't evil. Two-faced? Sure, but ONI is doing what they honestly think is the best for humanity, even if it means getting their hands dirty and Halo has a long history showing humanity taking this approach out of both choice and situation pressure.

We are presented with 2nd and 3rd hand information about Didact, which may or not be correctly translated and interpreted right. Even then, these statements have very little context.
You want to go ahead and jump to conclusions about the character based on them? Go right ahead but saying it somehow goes against canon when you rightly know there are significant gaps in our understanding of the fuller picture is just dumb.
These things don't break canon. And severely understating humanity's capabilities is quite funny. It's explained exactly how and why humanity now have the upper hand. And with ONI about, they intend to keep it that way.
Nothing canon breaking here either.
As long as the canon is fine, they can remove more mysteries. Answering questions and asking new ones is what keeps a franchise fresh.

Glasslansd and TTW have gone into great detail setting up the ONI and Elite plots. Have you even read these books?

Ideally there would be a combination of the Far Cry 2 editor and Forge.
Kinda hoping they could combine the both. Some of the stuff you could get out of the Farcry editor was awesome. The terrain stuff and objects painting was great but add that to the Forge stuff and it would be a great editor.
Bungie and now 343 have always been about the Community, so I still get a bit sad when they don't really push the Map Making side of the Community. Also seems a distant cousin to the MP crowd. All the DLC is MP focused, yet we had no Forge updates at all.
343i should just release the development tools. No streamlining crap, just full on coding and stuff.

I think Forge will always be hobbled because Microsoft wants to drive DLC sales via map packs. That's why OddOne's suggestion will never, ever happen.
I'm pretty certain therein lies the problem. The FC editor is really far more simple than Forge if you think about it. Plus it makes you complete that stupid fucking checklist just to use your map.

They can still do it. 343 have map packs with cool new maps and leave all the remake stuff to the Forge Community (Given the right tools of course)
I think many Reach players laughed to see Forge Maps being part of the default lineup. The later maps were really nice and well worth the money.

We think it's just another area of the Impact (asteroid) Forge environment.
I guess I'm saying that if you give people the actual dev tools for PC as was suggested - Quake III style - you would never, ever sell another map pack. The community is too large and too creative for 343 or Certain Affinity to compete.
