Wii U Thread - Now in HD!

Wii U really does support a multitude of controllers. While the options are nice, if the games themselves don't support them, then it's a waste. I didn't like seeing a clutter if Wii Remotes, Nunchuks, Classic Controllers, and GameCube Controllers (even though it's a great controller) this generation. I was frustrating to think "these two are compatible with Game A, three are compatible with Game B, but only one works with Game C. A simple, unified scheme similar to the other two companies would have been nice.

Wii Remote Plus should really have been the original. I'd love to replace my old remote (which I've never had to do, so I'll still be a bit bitter) with new colored Wii Remote Plus, but the price is still too steep for me to replace three remotes so my sisters can play Nintendo Land with me. I'd rather not buy the attachments, either. I still can't get over having to potentially replace three perfectly working controllers just because of compatibility reasons.

Dorfdad really does have the best username to go along with that avatar :D

Dorf = German for "village" (sometimes with a slightly derogatory connotation, implies of rural origin, simple)

I wonder if the appearance of Nintendo characters on Scribblenauts Unlimited is related to this info, believable, that someone else that my regular sources gave me a few months ago.

It looks like it's different (the message is more relevant to social media) but perhaps... ?

Is the Metroid mini game 5 players or only 3? I feel like all of the videos I've seen of it have only been 1 or 3 people playing it so far.

up to five. there are screens that show four player splitscreen + gamepad.

edit:

Zelda Battle Quest is also at least four players, btw. They keep demoing the three player scenario but there are also four player shots out there.

The player with the bow is always the GamePad player. No idea if it actually does support five players (no idea why it wouldn't) but all they've shown is up to four (3 + GamePad) so far.

Up to 5, one with the Gamepad control Samus ship while the 4 other are on the ground with their Sam(ii)us/wiimotes.

Edit: beaten.

I think 3 in demos due to spacing.
Since it uses IR pointing.. and I imagine trying to fit 5 people around the TV with 4 of them having optimal range for pointing wasn't ideal.

This.

So no Elite on Wii U, maybe 'cause they want to integrate it with miiverse or something... maybe I'm just scared, I don't want wii situation all over again T_T

Probably just a time/effort thing. Online features seem to be a very last minute issue for many of the games and getting Elite up and running and interfacing with Nintendo Network in time for launch wasn't possible/too much of a hassle for them so they don't bother and/or only patch it in if the game is successful enough to warrant it.

Hmm, spacing... That brings up a good subject. Space was already tight when trying to play Wii sports with 4 people. Adding a 5th person and things are definitely going to have to get cuddly or the gamepad player really will need to go sit on the toilet because that will be the only place for them to sit, heh.

GP Player can always sit in the corner or behind the sofa or behind the TV or on the floor facing the other way since he/she doesn't need the TV :D

I still don't entirely understand why Virtual Console games have to be run in Wii Mode. You would think Wii U would have some kind of Virtual Console setup itself, and that that would supercede the Wii one. Here's hoping they rectify that sooner than later; being able to pick up my VC games while somebody else is using the TV is quite appealing.

Also, Re:those Metroid screens: anti-aliasing for God's sake

it's only for existing VC games, which have built in emulators. new VC releases will almost certainly not run in Wii mode, and there's a good chance Nintendo will update the emulators in already released games. i'm not expecting any specific timescales on this all occuring mind, but consider that they talked about testing Wii U GamePad latency with Super Mario Bros.

This seems most likely... Basically, they are doing what Sony did for the Vita, only giving people an interim solution. That is, with the Vita sony said no to PS1 games because they wanted to get a native emulator our, versus emulating through an emulator... Nintendo is likely going to want a native emulator for future games, but they want people who spent money on a lot of VC games to have access to them right away... who knows, when the (hopefully) full Wii U versions are out they'll have additional features like true save states (ala 3DS)

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.

In other news, Pachter strikes again.

“I think [Nintendo] have about three and a half months of production by Christmas, they have another six months by the time their fiscal year ends,” explained Pachter. “They’re going to make 7.2 or 7.5 million units and it takes a little bit of time to get to market, so you’re talking about 7 million Wii U's selling by March. And there’s absolutely demand for that many.”

“I’m very comfortable it will sell out over six months,” continued Pachter, “but once they satisfy the hardcore Nintendo fans I don’t think the masses are going to respond to it as eagerly as they did with the Wii, so I don’t think the Wii U will sell anywhere near what the Wii sold. Once it sells its first 7 million or so it’ll probably sell about 10 million or so a year. Which is fine and Nintendo will make money.”

Zeld battle quest looks awesome too bad it's multiplayer only.

it isn't. check the lists on the previous pages again. it's multi AND singleplayer.

edit: done the work for you ->

The ONLY multiplayer-only games in NL are Animal Crossing: Sweet Day, Luigi's Ghost Mansion, Mario Chase.

Pikmin Adventure, Metroid Blast, Zelda Battle Quest are both singleplayer AND multiplayer

Donkey Kong's Crash Course, Takamaru's Ninja Castle, Captain Falcon's Twister Race, Balloon Trip Breeze, Octopus Dance. Yoshi's Fruit Cart are all singleplayer ONLY games.

chances we'll see another Silent Hill game made by climax on the U?

because that would fucking kill

I doubt Konami would go back to Climax. I'd love it to happen (SH was fantastic!) but I highly doubt it.

They cannot replicate Nintendo's design exactly, that's why third party controllers always tend to suck because they're shaped differently even if only slightly.

There are most certainly ways where Nintendo could be outdone in terms of controller design, even keeping the same inputs. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk had tons of waggle room when it came to ergonomics. I, for one, would have very openly welcomed a third party who make a "snap together", GameCube-esque controller out of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk (and some turbo switches to make TG-16 VC games playable!). Instead, we had to wait forever and eventually got pretty much Nintendo's exact design with weaker build quality and square buttons. Though Nyko did eventually try to try something new and different, I do give them props for the effort, though I forgot exactly what their version actually did.

I probably would pay for a Pro Controller that "gamecubizes" the button layout. The diamond configuration really isn't working for me these days, as I never remember which letters are where. When buttons are substantially different, the muscle memory starts taking over.

Well, child labour is obviously wrong. Their parents should be able to make enough money. But this is not case, so as a kind of temporary solution it is wrong but somehow acceptable. The other way was already seen in the sweat shops-incidents. They have been boycotted, the kids ended up at the red light districts.

At the end of the day, employers at these companies deserve more money and more rights.

Foxconn reaction:

Nintendo:

I doubt anyone here knows enough about China, economics, and child psychology to give a definitive answer about this stuff. All I know is that I dont want to buy anything that contributes to the misery of anyone, especially children. Having said that, I only check 'made in' labels because I prefer the quality of products not made in China, not because of any moral thing. Btw, keeping quality levels high in Chinese manufacturing is subtantially harder than in 99% of other countries. This book: http://www.amazon.com/dp/0470405589/?tag=neogaf0e-20 is a good description of why. And it has absolutely nothing to do with racism, it is just basic economics. cheers.

"Strikes again" isn't the best description here. His analysis (which I've paraphrased based on his actual words) is not ridiculous at all. It is, in fact, within the range that most around here have considered possible for the system. It's even in my ballpark.

gamecube face button layout was awesome. it also made it much easier to press two buttons at once, like some games often require you to. hitting A and any other button was simple. X + Y at the same time was easy too.

The GCN controller was so obvious. I think that's a good word. There was no question which was the main input button. A was so friggin HUGE! It was mind-boggling when people would ask me how to accelerate in Mario Kart when we played multiplayer.

Regarding diamond layouts, I would have loved it if somebody made their controllers with a "N/S/E/W" letter layout. It really only helps English speaking people, but it'd be amazing to not have to look at my controller to figure out where "X" is on this particular console. My brain knows the "E" is always "Right" and "S" is always down.

Say, anybody got that "roving X button" animated gif handy?

Don't worry PC gamers won't be getting it either.
PC and Nintendo go so well together. They usually get a delayed release, missing features, developed by C-teams and are usually afterthoughts from the Xbox and PS. It's like developers put it on PC and Nintendo reluctantly because the publisher wants a bigger audience to reach and the individuals at the studios who are picked to develop those versions feel ashamed that they got "demoted" to the Nintendo/PC team. It leads to crappy ports that don't take advantage of the unique features or hardware (dark souls for PC and ACIII or darksiders 2not using any extra memory to up the graphics for the Wii U are good examples).

Long live Nintendo and PC gaming. The way to go next gen!

Yep, PC and Wii served me well this gen. So many awesome games. I'll ditch other home consoles next gen.

As for the other stuff: Funnily enough the bad PC ports are usually better than the console counterparts anyway. DS fixed framerate and framebuffer via community fix etc.
