Damn the last 1000 posts were consumed at such a quick rate... and wow @ the heat Kayos got for the thread title lol.

Can't say I'm surprised that Railgun finally got another chance, but more RKB did take me by surprise.

Yeah Railgun was only a matter of time, J.C Staff wasn't going to leave any series that sold 25k on the shelf for too long, just a question of whether this will be the SISTER arc or mostly cute girls doing cute things which ignores anything covered in Index.

They're probably gonna cover the Sister Arc then filler the rest like season 1. The manga haven't finish the Daihaseisai arc yet.

And also, Oniai is the best second-best new show this season.
First episode didn't do much for me but I guess I'll give it one more.

Kaibutsu-kun and Girls & Panzer are my favorites so far, but I haven't seen Busou Shinki yet, or Chuu2Koi past episode 1.
Magi is fun.
Sakura-sou didn't impress me but will give it one more episode.
Robotics;Notes has started slow and without the amusing characters of Steins;Gate but I'm watching it on faith that it will get more interesting.
Everything else I either dropped after 1 ep or didn't bother watching.

Wasn't really a lot of heat.

I actually enjoyed this episode, maybe it's because my expectations were at an all-time low (at least when it come to this show) after last week so there was no way I could be disappointed but whatever. The appearance of
Yui
made it a bit worse, but it was still bearable. I like the new game, although Kirito's design looks much crappier than before, and how did he manage to
grab the spear? What skill did he use? There are no levels in this game right? Don't tell me that it's his reaction time and he will be awarded with the dual wield skill again because of it?

The design on the right looks much better than what he ended up getting.

The animation was crap, although I should probably say art since barely anything was properly animated.

Yep, they did a pretty good job with this fight. It wasn't as well animated as the past few but it was still pretty awesome to watch unfold after all of the build-up. However, I must say I preferred the original series depiction of this fight as it was better paced and felt like there was more "weight" to it. Definitely looking forward to the next episode.

This deserves a proper response, as I was touched by your words. No, really. Really!

The problem I had with Giant Robo (since, I'll be honest, I haven't seen it in two years!) was, I think, that it pushed the SRS BSNS alarm button a little too often for me to take it as straight-up cheese, which I am perfectly capable of loving. Thus I was forced to start thinking about it, since I wasn't invested in anything, and thusly it was revealed to be stupid, albeit in a way that could totally be excused if you were into it. I just wasn't, I s'pose.

But that's all in the past, really - I generally refrain from talking about it because I know I'm in the minority on it, I still thought it was pretty decent, and I don't feel too strongly about the series either way.

Think about it this way (as you, er, already are!): I'm still 2 for 2 with personal recommendations for you, sonicmj1, and given that I saved you from the pits of SHAFT hell and guided you along through the anime of the forever, those are still pretty strong positives!
And you should watch Adolescence Apocalypse already damn it!

I can understand that. There are definitely things a show can do to give the impression that they want the viewer to take it seriously. Giant Robo's opening action sequence in Shanghai, involving two people in traditional Chinese dress outrunning a transforming caterpillar train that ultimately is destroyed by a robot controlled by a 12 year old boy in a huge explosion in the middle of the city, all but ensured I'd never think too much about the plot, even after it tries to raise some pretty heavy plot points.

Personally, I felt like Vanquish's opening cutscene, a three-minute exhibition of people burning alive in the San Francisco streets (along with the ending, where
the President of the United States shoots herself in the head in fairly explicit detail
, caused me to engage critically with that story and find it wanting, which doesn't seem like the experience that most people have with that game.

(Even though I consider Giant Robo total ridiculous cheese, I wonder if there's a valid reading of it as a metaphor for the postwar reconstruction, and Japan forgetting about what it did during wartime. That reading probably is either completely unrelated or actively counter to the character drama at the core, but whatever.)

Either way, I think you understand my tastes well enough that you've given me good recommendations, so this all really changes nothing.

As for the spoiler, I'll try to watch the Utena movie in the very near future, now that I've actually gotten my mitts on it.

Madoka Magica Part 1: Beginnings, Part 2: Eternal

Great retelling of the series. There wasn't a ton of new footage outside of some scenes where it was used really well, but I thought the added attention to character animation, transformation sequences, and attention to environment (such as there were a lot more city shots) were really nice. Additionally, they further clarified how something like the
Walpurugis Night would be seen to people not aware of what it actually is, such in the form of a natural disaster.

Also mentioned before, but they finally put Madoka in some casual clothes, and her outfits were cute.

DEM TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCES yesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss they were so goood.

Also Sayaka's new costume with hariclip didn't look that bad. I haven't seen anything of the blurays, so I went straight from TV to the Movie, and for me, the differences were huge. Fight scenes were much more fluid in animation, character art cleaned up a lot, and some of the new animation sequences and short scenes they added were really really good. Also, before the film started they had a message to the overseas audience from the cast of the main 6, and stated that they redid all the voice acting for the movies.

I really felt that a lot of the subtle nuances and character quirks really came out better this time around, and that the voice acting as a whole was a ton more engaging this time around with the more emotional sequences being delivered more convincingly. They even made Kyubey more awesome this time around too.

The new OP was SO GOOD! Both song and animation were great, and that whole HomuXMadoka head-nudging thing got roars of adoration and heart attacks all throughout the audience. My favorite scene of that was where they did individual character cuts as if they were on a turn-table, pausing each character at the forefront of the screen for just 2 seconds, with animation focusing on their momentum while they were still int he progress of stopping. It's hard to put into words, but I loved it. There's also a SUPER CUTE scene of little clips of Madoka's life, from infant to her currect age that stops at some events of her life along the way. If you've wanted to see how cute she is as a 3 year-old, you're in luck because it was super [REDACTED].

I also thought the story flow was much better this time around. A lot of the less necessary scenes were cut from the first movie, and as a result, the narrative was much tighter. A lot of the key points of the show get explained in a less convoluted way, and the relationship building between the characters was handled a lot better. Such scenes like
when Madoka and Sayaka are in homeroom using telepathy to talk to each other in class
were cut. Also added for some really funny humor was a further delving into the love issues of the homeroom teacher (about 30 seconds worth or so, but it was hilarious).

Also improved because of the improved narrative were the improved character interactions. I think this goes hand-in-hand with the new voice acting, but I though the friendships and connections between each of the girls came across way better and impactful in the movie. The one that benefit most from this was definitely the friendship of Sayaka and Madoka. There's an added scene that really ties together that friendship a lot better, and makes their relationship a lot more believable, and adds further weight/drama to the events that happen later.

I think the second movie was actually the weaker of the two presented because, whereas it seemed that making cuts really helped the first movie a TON to improve narrative and story flow, they had to expand the material a little more in the second movie to fit a time constraint. This isn't to say it was bad, but I found it noticeable. Overall, totally harmless though, and I personally enjoyed the expansion of that material.

Anyways, I can keep rambling on and on, but i'll cut myself short.

The preview for movie 3 has me HYPED. SO EXCITED YEEEEAAAHHHHH LET'S DO THIS.

The direction it looks like its going in is going to be super interesting, and is going to answer some questions i've had about the series since it finished, as well as create new material that looks to excite me. Don't let me down Butch!

PS: I haven't seen any of the bluray material, so this was all super super awesome!

I'm not saying it's a comedy by any means, although Digi may well disagree with me. It's very funny, but in the same way that TokiKake was funny (for most of the film, at least). The issue really is that TokiKake is a simple story with near-perfect execution (IMO) whereas NeraGaku is over-complicated by its plot - and Nakamura doesn't seem particularly interested by those complications.

I have an epic post half written with my full thoughts but I need to get on a computer that can handle Rikai without freaking out to check some stuff about the original novel before I finish it.

Personally speaking, for a good chunk of the film I actually thought it was pretty fantastic, so although I definitely think expectations should be tempered there is still a lot to admire in it.

TokiKake also didn't have someone trying to catch someone else's attention via the use of an increasingly complex nut-firing pressurised recorder, or a running joke about a guy who leaves his fly down. Not saying it's an out-and-out comedy, but it does has a certain stink of Jun Maeda-esque forced comedy to it (though nothing anywhere near as OTT as some of that Key stuff, or Angel Beats, mind you).

Calling it a flat-out comedy is probably unfair, but it's certainly a couple of steps beyond TokiKake in that regard. It's got this peculiar habit of defusing it's situations with bizarre comedic non-sequitors as opposed to actual resolutions, which may well be a deliberate attempt at subverting expectations, but as someone unfamiliar with the original work, I'm not really equipped to figure that out (which I'm increasingly feeling is the root of most of my problems with the movie).

The first 2/3rds-3/4ers of the movie are pretty outstanding, though, I just think that final act could have done with a couple more passes over both at the script and the storyboard stage to ensure that all the visual cues they were dropping into the movie up until that point actually made some kind of coherent sense. I think I'll probably enjoy it a lot more on my second pass through.

-edit- I will say, a lot of the movies problems stem from that fact that it presents a lot of information in a fashion that comes off as being a mystery, when in fact it's a call-back or reference to the original story which this is following up. This is probably fine if you are Japanese and have had the benefit of there being a half-dozen prior adaptations of the work, but for a foreign audience it just serves to muddy the waters an awful lot. I think there's probably actually a very simple story in there which will reveal itself upon rewatch when equipped with some additional knowledge.

I will point out that Mr Wacky and myself did come into the movie in wildly different positions - whilst I hadn't so much as watched the trailers for this, he'd gone back and watched the 1981 live-action version of the movie in advance. I can't say that it likely filled equipped him for the movie, but it did mean he went into it with more information than much of the rest of the audience did. It's only really talking with him on the walk back to my hotel post-Blood-C that I actually started to manage to piece together what actually happened the NeraGaku...

Is it close to finishing it though? I mean this is going to be 2 cour and the Sisters arc will cover the first half... I'm sure J.C Staff and the author can work around near similar timeframes, like they did with Toradora and are more than likely doing with Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo.

Though Sisters Arc + girls do cute things anime filler seems most likely, hopefully Nagai is back either way.

Oh god it's like 5AM and you're still up. I thought I would beat you on impressions but I guess not.

Not only is my sleep schedule still dumb, but like I had an hour-thirty drive back because the city suuuuuuuuuckkkssss at night right around Wrigleyville.

Also, had no phone but I looked for you! There were a shitload of people there lol

Also, I liked that everyone laughed when Homura did a dramatic headtilt or waved her hair back.

Ok so everybody lives in a huge city except me.
I live in a really small town like an hour drive away, so not really. I'm just able to visit it. My cousin who went with me came from Iowa City, but he's staying at my house so it's not like he's making some 6 hour drive back in the middle of the night.
